Hi there!
This is one of the 'help me decide cause I just cant'-threads!
I am in need of a new graphics card, since apparently my current one makes my computer unstable while playing Eve. I currently use a pretty dated Radeon 9600XT card and I am looking mainly towards the Geforce 6600GT with 128MB memory. I am also considering the Radeon 800-family in about the same price-range. However am I correct in that the radeon chipset does not support shader model 3 or whatever it is called? Do I want that? Perhaps my computer is too slow (Athlon XP 2.3GHz) to play the games utilizing those effects anyway... And anyhow, Eve doesn't use those effects (yet?) so...
So since Eve is pretty much the only game worth of my time I figured I could perhaps make the decision a bit easier by asking you guys who apparently play the very same game I do about your experiences. I am not interested in the buy two 7800 and run them in SLI config advice; since even if money were no problem, I would still have a hard time fitting two PCI-express cards in a single AGP-slot!

I have an ATI X850XT and im very happy with it.
Having said that, yes, the X8** does not support Shader Model 3.0. The 6x00 series, 7800 and X1800 do.
Depending on how many other games you play and how much you want to spend, the 6600 is a great card for its money. Its what i suggested to a fried with a CPU similar to yours. Anything more would be a waste, as you havent got the cpu to make use of it - and the X700 just doesent cut it compared to the 6600.
As far as videoram goes, 256 isnt really any use unless you run 1600x1200 resolutions, or with high AA/AF values. Which is not something youre gonna be able to do well with that cpu, no matter what kind of GPU you cram onto it.
Between the X850 and the 6800, the 850 is faster but doesent have the purdyness of SM 3.0
Also keep in mind these days 7800s are cheaper than the high-end 6800 cards.
In the end, i suggest you get yourself a nice 6600 w. 128Mb. If you want anything better, youre gonna have to upgrade your cpu to make use of it. ------------- Please fix the EW stacking bug, it's a disgrace!

A 6600GT 128MB would be a cheap upgrade that would about double your graphics performance. -- Proud member of the [23].

Thanks for the comments guys! Apparently I was on the right track with my plans, but it's always good to hear the oppinions of someone with first hand experience. Guess it is to take the (nerf)hammer to the piggy-bank!

If you get an Nvidia based card(such as the 6600GT) you might want to consider BFG brand because they have a lifetime warranty & 24 hour toll free tech support.
