enjoying this game a lot but can't shake the feeling that 99.99999% of the universe is utterly generic... unless i look at the system info top left I coudn't tell one end of the galaxy from another. seems that unlike other land-based rpgs i've played there is very little point to exploration for it's own sake other than to discover trade routes etc.
just asking if there's anything in the universe worth going to take a look at or anything of interest at all really... once you've seen a thousand stargates/stations/asteroids it all merges into one ;/

The EVE gate is usually something worth checking out once if you are bored and have time. Can't remember the name of the system it's in though...damned brain, never works when I need it. ---------------------------------------------- Persona non grata |

Space does tend to look the same. Lots of empty space punctuated by stars and planets.
What were you expecting?
I actually think they have gone a little over-the-top as it is, with all the colourful gas-clouds and nebula. Real-life space is even less interesting. EVE needs more black space, would make it a little more atmospheric.
There is a nice Earth-like planet near Orvolle, as I recall, which is worth a look.

heh I knew it wouldn't be long before someone pointed out that it's SPACE we're talking about... nonetheless, doesn't anyone else feel it's a little lacking? there must be a FEW interesting places in an entire universe?! or have you really seen it all in a week?

As I say, what do you expect? I don't see how they can make it more interesting than it is without the whole thing becoming ridiculous.
COSMOS contellations are quite cool. Check them out.

They need a method for landing on and exploring planets. Then they could put all sorts of interesting things on the planets. --------------------------------------------- You don't know the power of the dark side. -- Darth Vader |

It's called New Eden. Greetings young one, my name is Niko Lorenzio. I have been exploring space for the majority of the time I've been here. There are many amazing places out there, that I find breathtaking. New Eden is a good place to start. Just a word of warning, grab something fast and agile, with MWD (Microwarpdrive) or at least AB (Afterburners), put on a few Injectors, and a small secure can if you wona leave your signature. Dont forget your camera. If you need more landmarks to look at, there are many ways of finding them. The easiest way to find the popular landmarks, is through ingame starmap, go to display settings, and activate landmarks. (Dont bother visiting 'City of God'. Biggest waste of my time ever) Contact me ingame anytime if you need more help or have any questions. Good Luck! And enjoy the view.

I had no idea bout the "landmarks" in the map. I`ll hve to check that out.
1 place I like is the Old Battlefield in the Tama system (warning, it is a .3 sec system). You can always find a good spawn of NPCs to kill, plus it looks pretty damn cool to. The debris and everything. It actually "feels" like a battlefield.
Of course, EVE gate is a good place to start too.
I will be checking out the other landmarks now that I know how to find them.

I feel the spacy look and feel of Eve is one of its best strong points... it's beautiful and believable. It still takes my breath away when the lighting is just perfect and captures a scene I have enjoyed before in a new and interesting way.

I'm new to the Eve world and haven't explored much at all. That's my disclaimer, so I'll apologize in advance for any ignorance.
I've been wanting to express this since my first week playing, so I will.
From what I've seen (and it is admitedly very little) the artwork is quite stunning and beautiful but without much variation.
I'm assuming we're in a galaxy. From what I've examined in the Star Map, it doesn't seem to be a spiral; more of a globular cluster or elliptical. Small by galactic standards, I would think, as there seems to be less than a million stars.
So buy variety I mean I thought I'd see more things like:
Areas of New Star Formation: Groups of stars (2-6? 12?) that are linked gravitationally (same "solar" system instance) that may or may not have planets/moons/asteroid fields associated with them (imagination can fill in the gaps).
Red Giants: Large stellar mass suns, with bright or dim cores having relatively "undense" shells surrounding them. Possible with only the outer planets surviving, gas giants being evaporated away leaving their rocky cores.
Super Nova Remnants: In a normal sized galaxy having a supernova explosion once every 50 years isn't uncommon. Our galaxy must have had it's share of supernova explosions. So where are the nebulae? I've seen the cloudy and colorful expansive tracts of sky that span my screen; but I imagine seeing smaller versions of things like the crab nebulae, cat's eye, etc. (imagination again controlling the palatte).
White Dwarfs/Pulsars: These would not actually be visible per se. But what about having a pulsar who's spinning magnetic field creates a mesmerizing light show in the cloud of charged particles generated as interstellar gas slowly plummets towards it. You have slow spinning older pulsars where you can actually observe the sweep of the field, and faster ones that look like they are strobes (should be able to turn the effect off if the viewer finds it annoying).
Black Holes: These could be as dangerous or passive as you want. Allowing ships that have enough warp/burner power to veer near and orbit the event horizon (attempted with a weaker thrust and you get pulled beyond the horizon, i.e. your ship gets destroyed by gravitational waves as your pod/computer jettisons to safety outwards). Having a Black Hole with a companion star (small or giant) that is having it's matter syphoned off by the black hole. The accompanying light show that would occur from matter that falls into a rotating black hole.
Comets and Other Stuff: Particular stars can have famous comets that circle in an out at (understandably) faster-than-normal time intervals.
Asteroid belts that actually surround a star, much like our own systems belt (too much data to keep track of?)
Planets that are fragmented due to ancient collisions with an comet/asteroid/moon.
Different planetary surfaces and textures.
Binary Star Systems.
Events: Events can be organized around the discovery of some of this. Imagine knowing that "due to recent, predictable, cycles in Star X's radius, scientists believe that it will go nova in one week. Those that would like to bear witness can..."
Anyways, like I said, I just started playing this game and have very limited experience. But I couldn't help feel that the backgrounds seemed repetitive and "generic".
I'm mentioning all this because I enjoy the game.

i think there was a comet not to long ago, my memory isnt the greatest but someone eles might be able to conferm that, maybe it was castor? dunno there are odd things in eve and im sure many of them have yet to be found.

I kind of agree with the op, but I think a simple change would help a great deal. ATM every system uses one of maybe 20-30 (maybe more, I haven't seen everything:)) backgrounds. I think it would help a great deal to have one background per region or per constellation. That way, all of say Sinq Laison would have one look, and I think that would help a lot for the whole immersion thing and also for the feeling of the vastness of space. It would also make every region/constellation feel unique, which imho it currently doesn't. Backgrounds are all gorgeous though:D I love the red cloud systems.

there are a lot of interesting things out there, i spent the good first 5 months of my game just exploring. most of the interesting things are hidden, train for a micro warp drive and use your scanner. most hidden objects are near a warpable object, so you basically just gotta fly 5000-15000km via mwd. as for the eve gate i believe the system is named "new eden" and a few interesting things in the area, space looks like its been twisted a bit around there. just because you cannot see something does not mean its not there _______________________________________________

I agree that space could have a few more interesting things in it. eg interesting and deadly enigmas would be good - it would give the feeling of space as dangerous and inhospitable rather than a big human arena! But I also agree with the person who said space is mainly empty and not so colourful. Pretty as it is I wish modern space games in general presented a less nebulous environment. Although it might seem an irritating snub to modern graphical potential, I think more black space would be more atmospheric - also it would render occassional nebulas more breathtaking - less commonplace.

Just remembered. an example of nice enigmas that are in there is the Monolith (from 2001). Nice touch!

WRONG !!
Real space is far more beautiful than best graphics in EVE.

The insides of complexes tend to be nice, altho some are rather bland others have the best environments in Eve.
Then there's some landmarks too ofc.
But tbh, the only real must-see environment is the one on the inside of a fleetbattle. Pretty colours all around. _______________________________________________

If you want a game with tons of beautiful and unique space environments, I suggest playing Freelancer. It has some of the coolest locations I've ever seen in a computer or video game ever(and believe me, I've played quite a few games in my time). I also like how different systems' skyboxes are realistically positioned to each other, something which is completely missing from EVE. The game itself is very simplistic and unrealistic compared to the likes of EVE, although one could argue that it makes it fun in its own way.
Anyways, EVE itself doesn't have much sightseeing opportunities apart from differently colored nebulas and stars, although some of the stations are nice to look at. Oh, and there's one asteroid belt in Isaziwa that sits right in the middle of a Saturn-like planet's rings, which gives a rather pretty view of the planet itself. And of course, I'll never forget the moment when I undocked from a station just to see my puny Condor pitifully swerve out of the way of a gigantic Apocalypse, which gracefully sailed on, barely noticing me.

Nice pics above:D However, all those nebulaes and galaxies are incomprehensibly huge! Eve takes place in a tiny fraction of the galaxy. Galaxies have billions of stars, and we exist in 5000 of them:) So even though real space is infinitely prettier, it doesn't work the same on our scale:) So although it's somewhat more realistic having space be emptier, I do think it'd be a little more fun to spice it up a bit more.

Actually that is exactly how it currently works. Systems in a constellation share the same background, its not random. Check it out sometime :)
