I've noticed downtime is down to like 15 minutes even though the message says 30minutes.
Has there or is there any work being done to eliminate downtime? The sheer fact that downtime interrupts gameplay is annoying. I understand what's going on in the background and why there's downtime from a technical point of view but how about a cheesy sort of thing like 'temporary downtime where time freezes in your system but whatever you were doing at the time of the temporal freeze is exactly how things are after the freeze.' |

There was some talk when it was reduced from 1h to 30m stating that removing it totally was on the overall radar.
But that it wasn't a primary target.

There's some blog a while back where they spoke about this and the goal is to become a 24/7 experience.
I'm just worried when to have time to shower then...

CCP Hunter spoke about it in a dev blog about a year ago. Read it here. You can also read about the hardware here. The eventual goal is zero downtime; but there is work to happen to get there. |

Well 30 minutes is wise,
if they said 15 minutes and it was 18 minutes then they would have forum posts complaining it's not back up yet. |

If they're discussing zero downtime then they're talking rubbish, it doesn't matter how good a server is, or how well it is maintained, a simple fact of computing is that it will eventually at sometime need to be rebooted, they may be able to cut it right down to bare minimum but they will always have to reboot at some stage if only to apply patches, not only to the game but to the oprating system on the server and other applications they use. |

While this is true they might introduce a system where the individual systems reboot on their own while another system takes over that process/node for a bit, redundancy and all that.
Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude. |

Failover clustering. High availability systems. Etc. You probably can't eliminate it 100%; but you can certainly create the illusion thereof through proper planning and structure. |

They should never ever eliminate downtime completely !
Are you guys insane ?????
People would DIE because of dehydration ! starvation ! and insomnia !
On the plus side though, people would use much less water because there's no time to shower anymore.
hm.... tough call, really ... |

If they finally implement system transfer from one node to the other, it's pretty much possible to eliminate downtime, because then, nodes could be rebooted individually.
This would also help lowering energy costs, because there's no need to have nodes with a few pilots only running. Don't know if they have to pay energy costs or just a fixed fee, though.
Also, it would help fighting lag ... no more specially reinforced nodes, but instead, when server load increases, people can get transfered to a stronger node automagically.
But it's a long way to go until then. |

DT is mainly to reset all the astroid belts and activate new outposts in 0.0
servers are made to keep running some servers run for years without rebooting and as CCP has a lot of expantions that they take the server offline for that is not the problem
but atm they have no way of making an outpost active without DT as it takes some heavy database action to open up an outpost |

All hail the Veldspar king
But why take a shower. You are bathing in pod goo 23/7 atm. And with the door to the station being closed till further notice nobody will ever smell you.

Moving asteroid belts to grav sites has been on the cards for quite some time. It used to be "move them to some kind of deadspace" because probing used to be hard. Now probing is easy, and rookies are given free probing gear (and an astrometrics frigate) as part of their basic training course. There is nothing stopping belts being moved to grav sites now.

There may be a way to incorporate the activation of an outpost into the normal running of the simulator, but I expect it is currently deeply tied into the code that is responsible for handling all stations, with the assumption at the time that the code was written that there would be no changes to docking locations.
Whomever the teams are at CCP, I wish them Odin's speed with the refactoring that will be required to remove DT :)

I like down time; it gives me a quiet time after it with less people around. CSM do you think? No matter the changes, high sec people chose the safests. Lots of stick and they will leave. Half the problem is the players in null sec; we do not want to be there with you. |
