Hey kids. My corp is going to start getting into some pretty heavy pvp soon. We have never really been wealthy, as we have only 3 active members and the money seems to disappear as soon as it comes in. So I have a question for all you PvPers out there: How can you afford to do it? I expect to lose a decent number of ships doing this, especially during the early learning stages. If I lose 1-2 ships a week, how can I get enough money to keep going?
And this relates to another conundrum: should I fly cheap, disposable ships with crappy weapons and mods, and count on losing them frequently because they are sub-par, or should I try to outfit my ship as well as I can, even though it would mean taking a huge financial hit if it got destroyed?
Any thoughts that can help me get a perspective on this would be much appreciated. |

Start with cheap frigs like kestrel/merlin/incurus/rifter and so on, and t1 fitting and so on..
I either do Minning(0.0)/Missions or Hunting low sec ;)

You're going to lose a lot of ships, so fly cheap ones.
Your insured Thorax, Rupture, Caracal, Maller or Vexor pack tremendous punch-per-isk.

Yeah, fly tech1, fully insured. The ability gap with better ships and equipemtn isnt that large at all.
As far as income goes, work together. If you can, work together with other corps since yours is quite small.
Then, go work together in 0.0.
Then you can get more isk. _______________________________________________

I'm amazed you have got away with that name!
On-topic, learning the ropes in cheap ships is definitely the way to go. The old mantra of only fly what you can afford to lose is never more true than when you are first getting to grips with PvP.
If you have one or two favourite ships, look at getting blueprints for them. Ditto on common mods and ammo. If you have someone in the corp with some reasonable manufacturing and refining skills, you can run some drone complexes to get minerals, and build most of the stuff the corp needs. Then you can spend cash on insurance. Ratting in 0.0 can bring in some reasonable money too.

Edited by: Paul Castrin on 17/01/2006 19:44:05 Some other tips in addition to the good ones already posted:
1) prebuild your ships, don't wait for the insurance ... if you can't afford a few key BPOs for frigs (BPCs for cruisers) and / or can't build them pre buy what you can ... stock pile whatever you can inc. weapons and modules ... replacing them in the field can be time consuming otherwise
2) rat in .5 as much as you can, lower if you feel brave (or already have a place you know is relatively safe) ... free weapons / mods > buying the same
3) have all your corp mates (assuming you trust them) throw in to the corp wallet all they can, crank the tax level up to max so that the corp is getting cash from ratting / mission running, this will allow the corp to stock pile and replace losses more evenly and keep a member on a bad run of luck from bailing
4) always remember that good team work will win the day ... get on Teamspeak (or any other voice chat) asap, text chat will get you dead real quick
Good luck.

name says it all realy,
But as for the OP, use tech 1 cruiser and firgates for pvp at first, at least untill you learn how to survive.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone!
The corp is as small as it is because we are all real-life friends, so we have no troubles with adding money to the corp wallet and sharing amongst ourselves.
We recently joined up in an informal alliance with another corp, so hopefully we will be able to get into some 0.0 pvp and rat hunting too.

I know some do. But I'm sure some "carebears" do it as well.
@ OP, I did lots and lots and LOTS of carebearing in my first 6 months or so in EVE. Serpentis 3/10 complexes (100m on a good day), lvl 4 missions before they were nerfed, and later, 0.0 ratting.
Atm, I'm funded by the loot from PVP I sell, and small scale production when I cba doing it.
