Hello Pod Pilots of Eve,
About 2 years ago I began researching Eve as a viable setting for social science research. With the support of this community I was able to progress with my projects. The culmination of my efforts can be found in my doctoral dissertation which was successfully defended in the Spring of 2005.
My research explored the interactions between Corporate Members, Thieves, Scammers, Pirates, and the Eve environment. It has yielded a wealth of information and, as promised a long time ago, I am providing a copy of my results to the community. I have uploaded a copy on eve-files.com: Playing With Power by J Alvarado
If you are interested in social science or are just curious about the interactions within Eve you will find the document of interest. It has implications towards topics ranging from internet community development to clinical aspects of online addiction. For the general public, the Results and Discussion sections starting on page 50 in Chapter 4 would be of the most interest. Transcripts have been excluded from the file to keep its size down.
Thank you for your support in this project. I look forward to doing more research on Eve in the future.
Who says ya canÆt accomplish anything playing video games on the internet?
Fly safe,

Well, congratulations on obtaining your Doctorate (spelling?). May it bring you larger paychecks and even more time on EvE (plus, the prefix/suffix stuff is pretty nifty too) __________________________________________ Pirates are GOOD for miners. Pirates shoot ships->New ships are built->New ships need minerals->Minerals come from ore->And ore comes from miners |

Edited by: Cobalt Wyvern on 18/01/2006 04:14:27 Hello,
Lots of posts, e-mails, and questions to answer.
First . . . the Tripple Post I figured multiple posts might be an issue. When I did the initial call for participants for the first phase of this project about 2 years ago I made multiple posts across the board looking for different types of players. In an attempt to distribute the results to all the participants I opted to do the same.
Thank you for the words of encouragement . . . as well as the questions. Most of them were asked and addressed during my defense. IÆm happy to answer them here as well:
Online Addiction The most unsuspected and fruitful avenue of future research that arose from the project was the resultÆs implications towards recognizing and treating the emerging phenomenon of online addiction. Eve, while not representative of all Online and MMO games, gives clinicians a better understanding of how to approach online addiction. My results have been used by colleagues as a stepping stone in exploring their clients' addictions.
Wrayeth on my conclusions about PvP and 0.0 In attempting to answer your comment I began writing and ended up doing another book. So...short and sweet: I agree with your conclusion of what I call the ôIts not my faultö syndrome where everyone is to blame but the person who perceives being wronged. IÆm not sure which areas you are referring to but most of the PvP I covered was nonconsensual pirating. I did a tour with a group of pirates (YARRR!!!) as part of immersing myself in the role. My experiences taught me that it can be a fun and rewarding practice in its own way. And most of that fun is derived from popping a ship which was unprepared for a gate camp. I didnÆt find pirating to be a profitable way to play, but it was both challenging and fun.
Crimson Smith on which came first Eve or my Research Project I heard about Eve around the time I began looking for a dissertation topic. I use to play MUDs and saw Eve as a way to explore how MUDs have evolved while working on my dissertation.
Lolly Popper on the PhD I completed my Dual PhD in Forensic Psychology / Masters in Organizational Behavior program in 5 years. I might have been able to finish it in 4 years, but I probably wouldnÆt have had any fun in the process. For me the journey is just as important as the destination.
For the E-mails IÆm a Forensic Psychologist who currently performs disability assessments. IÆm working towards my licensure in California, USA. I have worked with incarcerated juvenile and adult populations. I have worked with lawyers as a jury consultant, trial consultant, and an advocate for nonviolent first time offenders. My experiences cover a wide variety of groups which include drug offenders, child molesters, sexually violent predators, and the severely mentally ill. My initial interest in Eve was to examine how people used the unique aspects of an online community to forward their own agendas. My goal was to then use the information to better understand how sexual predators and scam artist use features of an online environment to facilitate their crimes. I got way more than I thought I would and the project took on a life of its own.
Feel free to keep the questions coming.

Very well written, though the font wasn't so pleasing for the eyes. Good insights, on your study. The con part was very interesting, and now I know why there are some names that are similar to my char names. _______________________________________
