Thanks man, I did not have that much fun for long. That naglfar vs celestis thread is work of a genius at least.
Notice that threads that require thinking, experience and knowledge are not that popular as the simple flame/noob threads. ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum

rename the topic "how to outfit raven for missions" and you'll get an instant 10 pages.

I guess I'll chip in. Here's a concise version of the good and bad sides of the two weapon systems:
Missiles' pros
Same damage on all ranges Missiles never miss Damage type No cap use F.O.F. & no tracking Greater burst damage
Missiles' cons
Lower DPS Cargo hold consumage Inefficient against smaller ships than the missile type optimal Inefficient at long ranges Delayed damage Countermeasures (defenders, smartbombs although inefficient) Missile ships' low cap Missile ships' high mass and low agility No short range heavy missile variant BCS II CPU requirement
Turrets' pros
Higher DPS Chance based damage Instant damage Efficient at long ranges
Turrets' cons
Chance based damage Reliance on optimal range Fixed damage type Cap use ECM vulnerability
As you might notice, I did not list skill requirements which someone mentioned as a pro to the missile system. I consider them close to equal since both cruise and torpedo skills need to be maxed to use TL2 launchers and missiles of both type.
Turrets may require small and medium skills trained aswell, but the large turret only needs to be maxed out once. Plus, after the missile user has trained the smaller missiles' skills, that benefit becomes void.
Of course, if someone is willing to provide the exact skillpoint amounts for comparison and they prove otherwise, I'm willing to change my view.
In short, missiles are versatile with the ability to perform equally in many situations whereas a turret user always seeks the optimal conditions, excluding the missile users' inability to perform efficiently at long ranges. Under the turret users' optimal conditions, though he generally outperforms the missile user.
This does not take into account the balance issues with specific ships, like the most debated Raven, nor should inbalance debated regarding individual ships or conditions be confused with the two systems' overall balance. However, taking them into account is important, and should be done with the consideration of all ships in mind.

They both have their good points and bad ....
Have I ever popped a Interceptor / Frigate in 1 volley with 1400's = Yes
Do I get instant damage with guns = Yes
Does half my targets warp out before my missiles hit = yes

Thats simple cos it was long range fleet combat where insta hit is better, and lets face it atuk are far better than pa.
Most people dont partake in 100vs100 battles

I am totally amarr skilled but I would like to use missiles again as secondary weaponry for my Apoc or for the khanid ships. However, this is not possible with 200k skillpoints in Missiles :( and I cant be bothered to train missiles atm, need a curse ;)
It is a shame that missiles got replaced with nosferatus as secondary weaponry. I liked the 2 missile points on my apoc! My torps are now replaced with some energysucking redgleaming stuff

before i start, i am caldari i only have ever used missiles as a primary and only ever intend to use missiles as my primary. i have a good understanding of turrets, and have two RL mates who play EvE one is a rax/deimos pilot the other is an Amarr/Gal BS and AF pilot.
Imo missiles could maybe do with a small amount of tweaking to get tehm perfect, i would say that ccp came pretty close when the nerfed them to getting a balance between missiles and turrets.
the only things i think are needed are;
a) the range on smaller missiles could do with being increased by around 5km.
b) the dmg nerf to smaller ships could do with being reworking, heavy missiles could do with having dmg increased and its the same for cruise missiles.
c) a small adjustment in ROF would be nice, maybe increase the ROF of torps and cruise missiles.
d) the range of cruise missiles should be slightly higher as they were originally suposed to be.
Turrents are still more powerful than missiles as they hit for what is in general more dmg (combined) and do it quicker.
i think a way around perfecting the missiles would be to bring out even more skills for missiles, to allow them more dmg and even higher ROF possibly new/more ship bonuses. ideally you need something that would mean the amount of dmg someone can get off of a TII turret, a pilot could get out of a TII missile bay, or work round a DPS system to balance it out.
theres my 2isk.

To add a very specific question into this discussion; is a Raven with T2 missiles a solo pwnmobile for missions again?

Very.
Though we went to do a little gurista missions yesterday... domi, mega and tempest. It was WAAAAY overkill. I mean, lvl4 missions need to get harder, but that is not made by adding trillions of frigs into missions, but rather few more battleships, so they would be more viable for groups, not solo.
I use no guns... i smack to death. |
