I'm hoping the forum mods sticky this, at least until the problem has been resolved so people with this problem can get some assistance without populating the forums with the same questions over and over.
This applies to people who have integrated video controllers (Intel Extreme, S3, etc..) in their computers but may also work for people who have issues with non-integrated video cards as well. The latest patch with EVE introduced a problem where you would crash to your desktop whenever you did a "Show Info" on a pilot. In some cases, people are not just crashing to the desktop, but recieving the dreaded blue screen of death, or the computer suddenly reboots for no apparent reason.
First of all, the computer is rebooting for a reason. You're getting the infamous Windows XP stop error and your computer has been set to automatically reboot whenever a stop error or other critical failure occurs. You can disable this by following these simple steps:
1.) Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. 2.) In the System Properties dialog, select the Advanced tab. 3.) In the Startup and Recovery section, hit the Settings button. 4.) In the System Failure section, remove the check from the box next to Automatically Restart. 5.) Hit OK to close the settings and choose OK again to close system properties.
Your computer will now stop rebooting whenever there's a system failure, which will give you the opportunity to write down more info on this stop error.
The CTD or BSOD resulting from a "Show Info" on a pilot in space is the result of an invalid request by EVE to the graphics API. The API chokes and your game will crash to the desktop. If your PC blue screens, you'll probably see a message saying "DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", a series of numbers such as 0x0000008E and a file that the failure occured from (ialmdd5.dll for example). If this is the case, the following steps should be taken:
1.) Ensure you have the latest drivers for your system. I mean everything too. Video, audio, motherboard, network card etc..I know it's a tired suggestion because it seems to be the scapegoat for every support department anywhere, but it can really help. 2.) You need to get a pre-RMR client file called "resFace.stuff" as this is the file that seems to be the issue. You'll probably need to use the file from version 3796 of the EVE client. You can find the RMR version of this file in your game directory (default "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\"). A link to a pre-RMR "resFace.stuff" file is below, although I cannot guarantee how long it'll work. I think CCP should offer the 3796 file "resFace.stuff" for public download from their servers to help address this issue.
resFace File (This file is graciously provided by a player named Rantor. Should you get it successfuly, you should probably send him a big thanks via EVE-Mail)
Once you have the file, you should follow Rantor's instructions to install it by going here.
This should resolve your issue with random PC reboots and CTD's that relate to the "Show Info" feature of EVE, at least for the moment. The next patch might correct this issue and you won't need to overwrite your resFace.stuff file anymore. However, you should hang onto the archive you downloaded for future use if patches that are implemented down the road continue to cause the same problems. There is no guarantee that this workaround will continue to work with future patches as well, so keep that in mind too. It's suggested that if you have an integrated graphics controller, you should look into purchasing a seperate card and disabling the onboard controller. An AGP card or even a PCI card will be infinitely better than the onboard graphics your system may have. If you're playing on a laptop, there won't be much you can do if future patches don't fix this error, or worse, disable this workaround.
