Me and three friends went to 0.0 space and were sweeping belts. We were all in Frigates. I have about 3.5 million skill points and the other two have played for about 4 months each.
We killed the rats in the belt and before leaving up popped a single player Vexor cruiser. He had a .8 security rating and had played for about 11 months. He locked us.
I imagined I would lose, but I thought I would go down guns blazing and possibly give my friends time to do some damage to him. I locked and began to orbit and planned to web, nos and activate my turrets on him. He killed my ship in 5 seconds, maybe 10 at the outside. The others went down just as quickly.
Questions and Comments
I do not mind dying or losing a ship at all. But I do want to at least put up a little fight! Especially against someone who has played less than a year. My response time was instant, and if the ship had held together for a minute or so I could have done a little bit of damage and maybe slowed him down a bit. At least had a 'battle' -- this was just being incinerated without any combat.
1. So what skills can I concentrate on to make my character more resilient in PvP confrontations? I want to get experience fighting, but there was no real fight here :)
If he had won after a few moments, the outcome would have been the same, but I could have tried a few things and possibly learned something.
My current skills are all learning 5/advanced 4. Gunnery 4, others 3. Engineering 4 and others 2 or 3. Electronics 3, others 2. Mechanic 4, others 2 or 3. Navigation/AB 4, others 3. Frigate 4.
Can you give me some focus and some guidance as to what I should train so I can at least put up a little fight?

I'd recommend defensive skills, including cap skills.
Hull Upgades Mechanic Shield Operation Shield Management Energy System Operation Energy Management Tactical Shield Manipulation Repair Systems Shield Compensation All 8 sheild/armor damage type specific compensation skills Armored Warfare Siege Warfare
Navigation helps too. Looks like you probably already can use MWDs. Frigs love MWDs. Don't forget to train up: High Speed Maneuvering Acceleration Control Evasive Maneuvering Spaceship Command Skirmish Warfare --- --- WTB Rare Skill: Yan Jung Technology ---

You've got a long way to go before you'll survive 0.0 PvP in a frig, but Tripoli has given you a good start on the road to survival.
Your best bet is to outmaneuver your opponent so that he can't hit you. This is tough against a Vexor with drones, however, so a good tank is your best bet. Sadly, T1 frigs aren't known for their good tanks. So EW is a good way to solve this problems. ECM jammers and Sensor/Turret Dampeners are good alternatives for this.
However, and most importantly, your attitude and resilience will get you very far in this game. Welcome to Eve and enjoy your stay.

It would help if you told us what type of frig you were in. I imagine it was a tech 1 a tech2 frig would have put up a fight. Also you need to remember that as far as cruisers go a Vexor is one of the more anti-frig platforms because it can use drones effectively. You don't hear much about tech1 frig pvp because they tend to be rather fragile, get into a Assault frig and you will put up a much better fight although I doubt you will want to go down "guns blazing". Those AFs are rather expensive.

T1 frigs can take out cruisers and battlecruisers, as long as the cruisers and battlecruisers are not fit for anti-frig work or heavily tanked. The Vexor is one of the best anti-frigs, so you had it coming. 5 seconds does not sound right though, so I take it you're exagerating a little. Your problem might not have been your skills, but rather your tactics. Did everyone in the gang attack at once? Drone range is limited to 45km, so if you had MWD you could have tried and drawn the drones out of range. Im not saying you're an idiot, Im just preparing you for the next try. I admire your tenacity and adaptability that took you to 0.0 to have FUN. You have a future in Eve.

This man speaks truth. Having played two, maybe three months now, I've taken out every t1 and t2 frig I've come up against in my Vexor. The ship is the most badass non-tech 2 anti-frigate ship in the game, and it's really just one you can't attack in a frig effectively. Best bet is to try and stay out of medium nos and webber range with rails or missiles, and hope his drones don't get you.

Don't attack drone ships in a frigate. Especially a T1 frigate.

ya gona have to agree with this poster. EVE is a game of strenghts and weakness's in a tech 1 frig (and most tech 2 frigs) drones are a bad thing. i am goan have to say an anti frigate fitted vexor vs 3x tech 1 frigs the vexor should win everytime. independent on skills (unless the vexor pilot really sucks).
you need to know your strenghts and weakness's, i dont think you did anything wrong in a tech one frig gang i would prolly attack him as well not much to loose. for all you know he might have been fitted with 250mm's and only heavy drones then he might have had issues taking you down. but like i said if he is fitted to kill frigs you are not going to be alive at the end.

I'm still a n00b, but reading this post has kind of made me curious. Is there any sort of 'point defense' available in Eve that would help defend against things like Drones and/or missiles after they've already been launched after you? ----- Have not yet joined a Corp. |

I agree that even in the best of circumstances, you would have been hard pressed for a victory there. Also a lot of 0.0 is claimed by alliances so it may not have even been "piracy" but alliance members defending claimed territory.
Anyway, to win in that situation, I think you should have concentrated on the drones first, would need high transversal speed to dodge the vexor (and possibly outrun drones), at least 1 20km scrambler to stop the Vexor from warping as soon as he saw competance, and some form of EW would have been very helpful as well. But also keep in mind, in the majority of fights, the people who agress think they have an easy victory in store. Usually that is countered by an ambush, but unexpected fittings can work as well.
Last question - how were you challenging 0.0 rats with 3 moderately skilled frigates?

If you look at the market, deselect 'show only availiable, and scroll down to the 'skills' subsection.
Offence is Gunnery, Missiles and Drones.
Defence is Electronics, Engineering, Mechanic.
Have a look through the 1st and second tier skills and make sure you have them all.
Last but not least, don't get into web range on an anti frig ship. But you know that now anyway :)
