Every once and a while, when I'm off exploring in (not too) deep space, I find the occasional Cargo Container floating around, now, I have a look in local and see if anyone is around, nope... hmm what to do?
Now if there is someone is local, I'll post "Has anyone lost a container", wait for a few minutes no reply ;
Now my question ;
If I open the container is this theft?

I know that I've left containers floating around because I don't want the loot and so if someone else wants it then they can have it!!!
I am aware that someone might run out of space in their hold nip to the nearest Station and then pop back - but as I said I'll post in local.
Does anyone have any opinion on whether this practice is illegal or just good fortune?

If its not a secure container, its for anyone to open really.
However being polite is usually a good idea, people who just killed a pirate and you get to the loot before they do, will not remember you fondly.
If there's no one in local, imo go for it, they could have CTD'ed tho. I usually check and if its crap I take it, if its something special I'll give it a minute or two.

If there is nobody there at the location then just go for it I think.
If there is another ship there then it might be considered rude if you don't ask first.
If sombody is farming a spawn and you just go and begin collecting the can - you WILL be fired upon

Personally, I'll just take the stuff. I'm more of a Scavenger, less of a Hunter.
Of course, this means if a Cruiser or Battleship fires at me, or let's loose a barrage of insults, I'll scuttle off quickly and wait until things quiet down.
