Synopsis of "The Teacher" also known as a spoiler
Kaleb is a child who has gone through The Teacher, a device not designed to accelerate the maturation process from childhood, but to hone reflexes, characteristics, and GÇ£teach one who they really areGÇ¥ as the lead researcher named Arus puts it. Time is perceived as taking longer to pass from A to B while in the machine.
The conflict of the story centres around KalebGÇÖs morally/emotionally driven efforts to oppose Arus while protecting his family and contacting the Jove, while Arus attempts to make ambitious use of the machine on the laboratory offspring and accelerate the maturation process radically by placing them in The Teacher for a long period.
The story is resolved when Kaleb takes the place of a sibling and enters The Teacher in order to preserve the device and help him find the Jove, but the machine changes his decision and he instead kills the researcher who created him, and departs to search for the faction in the company of his cousin, Pythia, now heavily modified by the The Teacher, and the station nurse, Janice, who quite likely believes Kaleb a murderer for killing Arus permanently.

I juts got done reading this wonderful piece.
I only have 2 things to say about it.
1) Go read it now and sit anxiously on the edge of your seat for the next installment of what I hear is going to be a 3 part series. 2) This 1st chapter was beautifully written and John did a really nice job with not making it to complex. For a first time reader of EVE Fan-Fiction I really enjoyed it and hope that his next 2 installments will be just as thrilling! |
