1) What does ship attribute 'scan resolution' mean when the character skill 'signature analysis' which should improve the ability increases the value of 'scan resolution'? In common usage, scan resolution would be the size of an object that can be resolved so a larger number would imply poorer scanning. Can someone explain the workings of this attribute/skill?
2) Gallente destroyer Catalyst mounting a 150mm Prototype I Gauss Rail-gun Rail-gun base damage multiplier 3.3 Rail-gun damage multiplier when installed 4.323528 Related skills Small Hybrid Turret L4 (1.2x) and Surgical Strike L2 (1.06x) Expected damage multiplier when installed 3.3x1.2x1.06=4.1976
Why is the actual damage multiplier 3% higher than expected? Is there another skill affecting this? If so, which skill?
Thanks.

The skill description for Signature Analysis says "5% improved targeting speed per skill level." What don't you understand?

Do you perhaps have a +3% damage implant?

1) Uh, the targeting speed I got, but as I posted, why is it changing the 'scan resolution' value in a way that normal usage of the words would indicate that it is worsening? Lvl 0 Signature Analysis Scan Resolution for Catalyst 500 Lvl 2 Signature Analysis Scan Resolution for Catalyst 550
2) No implants except for attribute-increasing, but good thought.

In 'normal' usage of the word resolution, bigger can also be better.
A high resolution image contains more information than a low resolution image.
My desktop scanner is better at reproducing fine detail when its scanning resolution is increased.
My ship scanner is better at target locking when its scanning resolution is increased.
My New Years resolution is to eat more chocolate.
( OK, maybe that last one's not such a good example! )

The bonus is that it increases the scan of the targeted ship so that it is easier to hit, not your own ship.

Spartacus: bigger is only better in terms of pixels contained within a fixed field. For instance, a satellite image is higher resolution because of its image to resolve smaller objects, which in turn demands more pixels so that you can make out the smaller object. Since the default scan resolution is listed as 500mm and the 'improved' scan resolution is listed as 550mm, it appears that this attribute is not a pixel number, but a linear dimension (the edge-length of a single pixel????). That would suggest scanning a larger area if pixel number is fixed but trading away the ability to detect smaller objects to do it.
Freada, if this is true, can you explain it in more detail or point to a post explaining it? How does a resolution of 0.5m adjust targeting of an object of say 86m (the signature radius of the catalyst, so assume one catalyst is targeting another)? Why does changing the resolution to 0.55m make it better in any significant way?

Do you have mods fitted that increase damage?
mag field stabilzer etc?

When these damage multiplier values reported, the railgun sans ammo was only thing fitted to the ship. When I get home tonight, I will get a newb frigate to see if it tracks the DD or the character.

so, my hypothesis is that the equation is more like ((((((3.3 * 1.05) * 1.05 * 1.05) * 1.05) * 1.03) * 1.03)
which gives 4.25545. still not 4.3235, but closer.
I think if you play around with the multiplicative order of the 1.05 and the 1.03, you'll probably find a way to get 4.3235

They way i see it is this (O= ship)
Frig scan res
__________ | | | | | O | | | |__________|
BS scan res
___ | O | |___|
Now asume that the box is thier targeting 'recticle' its much easier to lock onto a ship with the larger one as you have less 'area' to cover, whereas the BS one has to work 5x harder to acquire that same lock.

The order of multiplication doesn't matter (for the mathematicians: the product is commutative).
Back to the problem of the mysterious 3%... the only reason I can think of is an implant which gives you 3% additional damage to (small hybrid) turrets. Can you check if you have either of these two installed: Hardwiring - Zainou 'Deadeye' ZGS100 (Implant slot 6) or Hardwiring - Eifyr and Co 'Gunslinger' CX-1 (Implant slot 9).
