Capsuleers of New Eden (and perspective writers)
It is my absolute pleasure to inform you that Telegram Sam has done it again! The return of the Pod and Pilot Fiction Contest for 2013. You can find the rules for the upcoming contest at https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=284381&p=2 or at his website, located at http://hullabalutions.blogspot.com/2013/10/hellowriters-and-readers-heres-pod-and.html.
(although, why he posted the original post in GD is beyond me.....)
In a nutshell...
Pod and Pilot Fiction Contest is a contest for perspective writers to tell tales of New Eden in three Catagories.
Eight Thousand Suns in New Eden These stories carry the best prizes but are the toughest since they require the tale to be told adhering to the canon of Eve Online. You cannot use ingame character, corporation or alliance names. It must be set within the New Eden milieu as laid out within the prime EVE fiction.
A Day In The Life True, mostly true or completely made up events from the New Eden or Dust 514 landscape. In game character names CAN be used along with corporations, alliances or "player driven content" events. This catagory is much more fluid (and you are allowed to take potshots at the canon).
Other Things Just Make You Swear And Curse A brand new catagory for the 2013 contest! For those of you that DONT think EVE/Dust is Srs Bzns! Stories here should be Eve/Dust related but have humor! Whether knee slapping or Sly-n-Dry, humor is the main component.
Did you see I mentioned prizes?
Oh yea, there will be prizes! Somer Blink and the High Drag podcast have contributed (so far) 101 PLEX!! (yea, Somer had to show us up....) You can see the break down of prizes on the above linked sites. If you would like to donate prizes to this endeavor, contact Telegram Sam. He'll know how to distribute them properly.
Judging? There will be judges. CCP Eterne and CCP Falcon (two experienced EVE writers) along with CSM Member Mike Azariah and Telegram Sam himself will be the crew of judges you will need to impress! (I hear that Mr. Azariah is looking for more bounties.....coincidence?)
Go to the sites. Read the rules. Take up your writing utensils and write write write!!
Deadline for submissions is November 10, 2013 at 2359 game time.
Clock is ticking folks! Now.........go!

Good job he did, otherwise I wouldn't know about it due to the fact that before I read the post in GD, I never came here...
I have never wrote anything to let other people read it (I keep it all for myself) but I figure why the hell not. I'll give it a go.
2000 words (just over) so far, and about half way through (ish). But I have no clue what to name it! Sucks... Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person." |

He, scrapped my first serious attempt after it grew too complex to fit within 5,000 words, but already have another one in good shape. Also i am plotting another micro-story/joke, if i can figure a good punchline for it. The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. I wrote the draft for a 8,000 suns story, will be beefing and checking it up along the week. Fortunately, i'm on holidays, as I hadn't had a chance to write seriously in years.
(Anyway the story is not specially briliant, so no matter if I can improve it, I will try and come with something else. Would be sweet to have a story in each cathegory!) The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |

If you can, post the story as text instead of an image, so we can copy and paste the text and do a word count. (Have to make sure stories aren't over 5000 words). I suppose an image on imgur would work, if it's in PDF format. I can convert that to text. Last year most people posted to a blog site like wordpress or blogger, or a free website builder like webnode.com. |

Some stories in there that will leave you thinking about them.... |

Once you're done judging, would it be possible for the judges to post critiques or their reviews of pieces? I unfortunately wasn't able to give mine the editing it needed, but I'm very curious about the lore perspective on it all. :D
Additionally, glad to hear about the first week of December! If it's possible to complete judging and distribute prizes before the PLEX for Good campaign ends, I think that'd be pretty nifty. ;) Priano Trans-Stellar: elegant solutions for the State's needs |

I'll critique pieces, if writers will mail me asking for feedback. One other judge from last year did the same also. I think that's a better way than publicly posting critiques. Writing, visual arts, music and similar are hard crafts. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, all that.... So I'd prefer to privately give feedback privately, and give people the option to have the critique posted here in EVE Fiction if they like. That said.... feedback from fellow writers:
I'd say we need an unified website for the fiction writers. We have people posting stories on personal blogsites. Who knows where those stories are? Who but just some friends notice them and read them? Not optimal at all. If somebody has written a piece, it should be read and commented on. I have a dream, and it's: -A solid website for EVE writers. -It has a place to post writings . Where the stories are permanently linked, and accessible forever. They don't disappear to page 29 (a lost hidden corner of the internet) after a few days. -Works published on personal blogsites can be linked and easily accessed. -A forum allows writers to speak to each other (completely troll/hater/naysayer-free). Writers can let each other know that they read the story, and offer feedback. Writing friends helping writing friends. With frank honesty, because they write too. -Significant lore discussions and developments can be linked back here to EVE Fiction, for comment and clarification perhaps by our lore guru devs.
Basically, a hub that people know to go to to publish, read, and comment and share. It could be good, I think. Anybody up for making a site like that? Those are just few ideas, it could be much more than that. I'd like to myself, and might do it someday, but ATM time doesn't allow doing it right. |

Will be good to know what the judges liked and did not like, respectively.

Judging update: It's still ongoing, we've got about 1/3 of the scores in so far. The aim is to finish this week, if people's spare time will allow. After that we'll probably have to do a tie-breaker round of judging, but that should be pretty quick. |

Sorry, I might have forgotten to mention that rule earlier. Judging update: Scoring of the stories is now at 78%. We're getting close. Uh....yea, you sort of forgot to mention that one.

Yes... Gorramit Sam you're such a tease Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. I had a lot of fun with it, so it came out quickly. I had to find out how a capsuleer could get a sinus infection and stomach flu in the first place. Once I figured that out, the story kind of wrote itself. Space Fonzie was just an added bonus.
It was good practice as I want to write more.

If I might be so bold (haha see what I did there ) as much as I am looking forward (okay so I look at this thread more than once a day haha) to the scores from the judges and finding out who came where, I have no qualms in waiting for the last set of scores to come in.
I would rather wait another week or two (Christmas and work can be extremely busy for some people and they're judging in their free time) so that all scores are in.
At the end of the day its upto you Sam, but I'm just voicing it out there that I (and I'm sure others (all in favour say "aye!")) don't mind waiting a bit longer.
EDIT: Cheers for the update on the progress. Congratulations to the winners! The competition was fierce, but your stories impressed four individual judges enough to come out on top. And congratulations all of the writers! If you didn't win a prize this time, you dreamed up a tale (or some tales), crafted it into a writing, and created you finalized work(s). No doubt the experience made you a better writer-- don't stop now! (A note-- we had stories for at least three non-native English speakers this time. A special salute to you guys; that takes courage, and you did great).
And thanks to our sponsors, all fine patrons of the arts. You all gave just out of generosity, just to encourage people to exercise their talents and have the EVE community expand its mind a bit. Here (in alphabetical order) are the people who gave the prizes to the writers: High Drag: an EVE podcast GÇô 1 PLEX Max Arthie GÇô 2 PLEX Prince Kobol GÇô 2 PLEX Rifterlings corp GÇô 3 PLEX Somer Blink GÇô 100 PLEX Thanks, Somer, for coming back this year as a major sponsor. And thanks, individuals and corps from the community, for digging deep into your wallets and transferring some hard-earned ISK to writers laying they souls on the line. You all are excellent.
And finally, thanks for generous time donation to these crucial people: CCP Eterne (reader-judge) CCP Falcon (reader-judge) Mike Azariah (reader-judge) labtechwar (contest banner art)
All stories are here. Check them out, it's good reading. Writers, some comments will be up on the contest blog page soon. Good stuff all-- somebody put up another contest soon! Don't stop now, keep the tale-telling momentum going! |

I'd like to thank all the sponsors for the really great prizes. Seeing all of the generosity in this community is inspiring!
I'd like to thank the community for such a great turn out and participation. I'm so happy to be part of this community with all the talented people I've flown and interacted with over the years. All of you, ladies and gentlemen, really make being part of EvE worth it.
Congratulations to all the winners... and those who made the effort to submit! Completing a full story is something to celebrate. And we all put a piece of ourselves into this art. Keep writing!

Callista looks over the assembled dignitaries and wonders once again why she didn't wear the white dress instead of the blue. Oh, well, no turning back now.
When The Honorable Telegram Sam calls her name and the weight of everyone's stare turns her way, her blush goes from rosy to deep crimson. She rises from her table to the sound of polite applause.
As she makes her way to the raised dias, the trid-reps jostle for position. Well, not as much as for Rhavas, mind you.
Standing at the podium, the lights shining down on the stage blaze and she blinks back nervous tears. As she adjusts the mic, the timer starts counting down, 30 seconds.
Well at millions of isk per minute commercial time, they sure as hell weren't going to waste it on yet another boring victory speech. So, as practiced in front of the holovid in her mack, she leaned forward just enough for her dress to accentuate her camera shy "assets", gave a big great smile and began, "I would like to thank the judges for the time and effort it must have taken them to go through the hundreds of pages of text. I would also like to thank the incredibly generous sponsors who encourage all of us writers to slip out of our pods and fire up our word processors. But I would like to especially thank Sam for having pulled this even together once again. Sam, this is for you..." and looking right into camera 1, she winks and blows a kiss.
"See you all next year!"
And then, relieved that it's done, she walks down the stairs and off into the wing, with fifteen seconds left on the clock.

"Jalep. Jalep!" Jemica whispered as loud as she could, forcing her breath from the back of her throat.
I was busy. "Just.. a few more... inches..." Carefully, I worked the eight legged insectoid robot towards Rhavas' wallet. As it slowly crawled towards the Grand Prize winner, my mind began to drift, dreaming of what I'd do when I relieved him of his newly won Plex. "Almost.. got it." I nudge the controls with painstaking care.
"JALEP! You won!" She yelped, grabbing my shoulders, jostling the controls and sending my robotic thief skittering wayward across the floor and into Da'iel Zehn's boots.
"No. I didn't - look: Now Rhavas is moving his wallet to his front pocket - I'll never snag it now." I grumble, patting my own pockets in search of a pack of cigarettes.
"No, you won First Place in the Day in the Life Category, you lug!" Her eyes were glimmering. For a second I consider what 'second cousins' really means and how much it matters, before snapping back to the moment at hand.
"I did what? With my story?" I drop the cigarettes in shock.
By this point ushers are guiding me to the raised dais and a fog of emotion is gathering around my thoughts. My legs feel weak. I meander over to the podium. I squint as I look up, trying to find Jemica in the crowd. The spotlight is too bright. I lean over the microphone, holding my hand over my brow to shield the spotlight.
"Umm. Thank... you." When did my mouth get this dry? "Thank you to... everyone who..." My mind is a broken jigsaw puzzle. Words are eluding me. I try to focus. It's not working. I stop for a second to compose my thoughts. "Thank you to everyone who put this... great contest together. Thank you, again."
I look up and see the timer is almost at zero. I turn, confused and try to find the exit.
"Yeah, bang up job on that speech, Jalep" I mutter to myself as I am guided back stage. It didn't cover what I wanted to say. Not even close. What I had meant to say, were my thoughts not a jumbled, confused mess. Was how deeply humbled I was to be chosen from among such a wonderful collection of stories written by such talented writers. What I had wanted to say was how impressed I was by the quality of the works submitted. How they had all clearly been toiled over and been written with great passion. But none of that came out.
Had I not been so completely surprised by the outcome, I had meant ]to thank Sam, CCP Eterne, CCP Falcon, and Mike Azariah for taking time from their busy schedules to read all the stories and provide thoughtful scoring on each. How this contest adds to the richness that is New Eden and highlights just how amazing the community surrounding it is.
As I head back stage, I reach into my jacket pocket and pull out a pen.
"Better start making notes for next year's story."

Wow, I'm thrilled. The prize for Taking His Medicine will be converted to ISK and shortly thereafter converted to wrecks of ships. Given my killboard, mostly my own.
Thank you, Pod and Planet sponsors! Trying out all the things to do here in Eve - it's quite a checklist. So I made a blog Jakob's Eve Checklist |

That was some fine writing. Sam, you'll need to let me know who to send the High Drag Plex to.
*grumbles about Kyle Yanowski beating me ....again!* Next things to do: -Let sponsors know whom to contract prizes to. I'll do that this evening. -Send feedback to writers who requested it. I'll be doing that through the week. I'll also see if the other judges are available to offer comments.
(Advanced) thanks for the feedback, I plan to be on the top 29 next year! The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |

My thanks to Telegram Sam and the providers of this opportunity to get creative - and a big congrats to everyone who put their minds in motion on this one. Each story had a tangible uniqueness to it - great to read and get into others' experiences and imaginings. I'm looking forward to the next contest. I read over some really cool stuff from you guys and appreciate every bit of it. Fly safe, or dangerous, or drunk, or whatever fashion you choose! o/ |

As its Christmas and they are marking in their free time, I think it's safe to cut them some slack. I know I've been super busy this holiday EDIT: I was going to put "Patience young one. All in good time." But as I started typing it I forgot what I was putting (until after I had already posted)
