I need a ship that can carry plenty of cargo but can be kitted up nicely to defend my Retriever. Which ships would be suitable?

Damn thatÆs a tough one. Most things with large cargo are weaker than the barge. Ice blocks are huge as IÆm sure you know. Maybe an Exequror, a Gallante cruiser. It could carry 1 block with the lows filled with cargo expanders. It has a drone bay and some turret slots. Most BS should be able to carry a single block with enough cargo expanders. The question is what are you trying to defend against? The simplest defense would be your barge's drones, and maybe some remote repair from an industrial.

At the moment I have a Hoarder in which I can transport 7 blocks with two cargo expanders - but it only has one high slot. We're only defending against 0.6 belt rats but 'd be more comfortable if we had more firepower.
At the moment we've got 3 light drones and 1 medium in the retreiver and that one high slot on the hoarder.

your refer to it as "we" so assume its either two people or one person using two accounts, so
Ice is that big that no-one wants to steal it in thier frigate or cruiser so ore thiefs should not be a major concern.
Have the person who is hauling sit in the ice belt in a warship of any type, maybe a destroyer (easy to train for and can take out the rats with ease). After a rat spawn then go back for your hauler and move your ice. You should be able to do 2 or 3 runs for the ice at least before the rats come back. Then you could get back in your defender till they have come back.
Also use your drones as backup while the defender is hauling. Work on your drone skills, a few medium drones should be more than enough firepower to kill enemies in .6.

Mining barge can protect itself. I mine ice in .5 space for hours on end with only 5 light drones for protection. And I have what many would consider crap drone skills since I never use them besides when I'm mining. Trying to use a seperate ship for hauling and protection is a waste. And just in case you were considering it....I've tried armed Industrials and Transports, but neither worked as well as the drones.
