Now... I was selected for the second beta wave here in Eve... and, while having been anxiously awaiting SWG and was playing that extensively also during beta and post-launch.. I guess I just never gave EVE a proper chance.
Here I am now... toying with a trial account... and... boy. I don't know where to begin.
Not only does the game mechanism in each and every section seem so complete and well designed... the graphics are amazing. And.. to top it off, CCP have managed to apply sound effects that makes the complete package so unique and unlike many other.
Grades for overall impression and atmosphere.. I'd give it 13 on a scale to 10.
And.. then there's the real bonus in my eyes. The player controlled economy, market and least but not less!!! The player controlled Politics... I've NEVER ever witnessed anything like it in all my gaming career - And mind you.. I have played computers since I was 8.. and I'm turning 31 in july.
And then I'm telling myself, "What the hell do I know.. I'm on my 6th day of my trial account".... but I've been blessed by meeting very experienced players who have told me alot of the basic things in the game.. and not only that - but witnessing the politics going on here in the forums are awesome.
So... hrmm... don't really know how to end this post other than expressing my absolute fascination with how well EVE is looking now compared to back when I played it in Beta... astonishing.
Just one thing... I wonder if there is room for a casual player who only have 2-10-20 hours of random playtime during one week.

Heh, of course there is room for you Raam - there are many other players who play less, but still manage to participate nicely in the community.
Just a shame that you didn't join before!

I am in the same situation as you describe, Raamster - I had the chance to join Eve beta testing, but I was also beta testing SWG, and I chose the latter of the two. Bad mistake.
Needless to say, I wish I had chose the other way around - but hindsight is always 20/20, and better late than never. I am here now, and with such a rich and vast universe to explore, I am going to stick around.

Great post to read, and so familiar. I've been playing 'puter games for about the same length of years, and RP games were never high on my list. Games to me were supposed to be mindless relaxation, point and shoot, sharpen the reflexes a bit... Dunno, maybe I've just gotten older, but for some reason EVE grabbed me from the first "Hello" from the tutorial-chick. EVE right away and for the first time gave me the feeling that I was entering an actual virtual world. Who knows, maybe in a couple of years time we'll all be experiencing this with 3D-goggles on, getting that genuine pod-feeling

Yeah, this game seems to have something extra. One shard(!), a mature community (as far as I have encountered), complex game mechanics and a slower pace makes for a very interesting game. I am just starting (still in trial) out but so far I am intrigued.

You've really hit the nail on the head.
I remember the feeling of awe I had when I first played Populous, Elite, Dungeon Master at the age of about 10 back in the late 80's.
As a casual gamer, EVE is the first game I have played in over 15 years which caused me to sit back and think 'wow'. Its pretty incredible stuff.

One could be tempted to ask CCP - How on earth are you ever gonna top this off? I mean.. do you ever dare make a second game.. imagine what you have to live up to :)

Ah...but they don't need to make another game. All of their efforts go into expansions for this game (which are free). So this game keeps getting better and better. Any new ideas from this game go right back into this game. They only top it off by adding more for us to enjoy.
And just as a further promotion to why this game is the best.... My corp (and many others) offer a variety of production and other economic related services. We have pilots that mine minerals. Others gather minerals and other raw materials from regions around the galaxy. They bring it in to central hubs where our producers will manufacture items. Then, those items might go back into the cargoholds of ships to be distributed around the galaxy to be sold. This all happens while ships are being shot at by pirates (and maybe warring corporations). The items sold go into the hands of other pilots and corps in need of supplies for their own missions and goals.
You just can't do this in any other game.

Good question about a replacement, Raamster. I was wondering about the graphics/physics engine. Would this just be a client replacement or a whole new EVE program, server and client? I suppose the market DB and char info could be migrated so the first EVE universe could continue.

Well actually I wasn't referring to any replacements in regards of THIS game....
Software companies though do eventually move on to their next title.. and I was merely thinking how in the world CCP was planning to top this game off =)

Edited by: Chrisbitz on 28/01/2006 12:54:14 You know, the thing that really blows me away with Eve is the attitude of the devs. (I'm not that experienced with other MMOGs but,) in all the other games that I've played in the last 15 years, I've never seen any eveidence of the devs even being allowed to acknowledge the players, never mind responding to forum posts on a daily basis!
I think this is a huge bonus for Eve, and I wish they'd mention it in more interviews and publicity material.
The devs are all as addicted as we are, and you just can't ask for more in terms of proof of dedication and caring about making Eve better and better.
Edit - It makes me laugh when people refer to Eve as CCP's flagship product - I mean - It's their ONLY product! Considering Icelands lack of export industry, CCP is probably a VERY significant contributor to Iceland's national economy!

I couldnt agree more. I had no Idea what Eve was when I downloaded it. I was actually supprised when I started the game and saw spaceships lol. (I blame my life in the Eq1/Eq2/Planetside Closet)
I subscribed after my trial and canceled all of my other mmorpg accounts.
- Devs - Breath of fresh air, makes me want to work for you guys!
- Community - Now I know why the EQ2 crowd sucks so badly, everyone with half a brain came here :)
- Game - I'm impressed by the depth, scope, balance, and mostly the creative new Concepts I've never even considered in a game
I haven't felt this addicted to a game....since very early EQ1. (Yes thats a compliment) It scares me a little bit ;)
Great work, cant wait to see whats next. Now if I can just get all my buddies to switch.

Heh, yeah I was kinda in the same boat as the OP, I bought EVE on like the first day I think, or pretty soon after release, played through the tutorial but never played the game again after that, was too wrapped up in other games and at first glance EVE didn't seem to good to me. I just came back to EVE about 3 or 4 weeks ago and am really into it now...sucks that I never stuck with it or I'd be one of the power houses of the game now. :) I still have my character from back then, 2 years 6 months and something days/hours old but still a nub with nothing trained lol, too bad older characters don't get like accelerated training or something. :)
So anyway, I came back and started from scratch, we'll see how long I stick around this time.
