Hi all. I have been in the game for a while, but have never really got the hang of using smart bombs effectively.
Can anyone give some advice on how to use these effectively in Ratting and PVP?
Thanks in advance.

Well first you gang up with a bunch of people who are not in your corp... all gather around the one with the smart bombs, while he activates them....watch the fireworks....
On a serious note: Smart bombs work well against large missles that tear the crapola out of you ship, if the timming is done just right. Dont use them in gang ops in empire...
and the smaller rats maybe you can get them...but your going to have to chase them down.
Pvp: Thats easy. Load up with as many SB's your ship can handle, park inside a gate and wait....

smartbombs are a tricky thing - best to leave them in the hangar in high sec (except maybe on solo missions)
for PvP, i'd avoid them, except maybe for missile ganking (not sure how well this works post-CWE), but if you raelly want to PK a close orbitter, smarties will do it

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 26/01/2006 16:24:43 I've put 2 of them on my long-range raven hunting setup just in case something spawns on top of me. Was especially nice pre-rmr, when 3 BS, 6 cruiser and 3 interceptors could be really deadly for a weak tank, if they spawned right on top of you.
Now it's more for convenince. I kill any angel tackler in seconds with smarties except impalers. I'd need 9km smarties for that, but it's easier to get rid of tacklers in rmr anyway, so I don't invest 1 billion in smarties just to be able to bomb impalers, too. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |

The most important thing tactically with Smart Bombs: "Gang, DO NOT come within xxxx meters of me. I will not be held responsible."
Smart Bombs are wonderful toys for a few reasons:
1. They do decent damage to any ship in range (this is both good and bad -- see my first sentence.)
2. They are THE BEST way of podkilling. Light up 8 large smarties on a Bombageddon and if you kill their ship with the first 6, the last 2 kill their pod. You can even get setups which can 1-salvo ***** and pod someone in an Assault frig, if you set it up vs. the right damage types (naturally, if they are well tanked this is likely not the case.)

A former corpmate of mine lost a nicely loaded Ferox when he warped to a belt in empire and popped off a smartbomb. Hit some guy who was just happily buzzing around with a cloaked ship.
Not sure what the chances of that were, but I'm assuming fairly small considering nobody was near the warp-in point of the belt.

If you think that's bad. My cloaked Stealth Bomber once managed to collide with a cloaked Covert Ops pilot near a gate. Boy, did we both jump!

The odds of that happening....Man, their mind boggling. Funny quotes:

Not quite what you asked for, but Smartbombs are one of the most efficient ways of dealing with all the frigates on Level 2 Illegal Activity, especially part 3/3 where they tend to swarm you with multiple blaster armed fast orbiters.
