I'm currently getting around 12 fps in game, and this is just not acceptable.
My current hardware includes: 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 Gig of RAM GeForce4 Ti 4600
I'm on a budget, so I was wondering which upgrade would make the most sense and give me the greatest fps boost.
From my reading, I'm guessing a CPU boost would be best, but what are your opinions?
Best Regards,

Just to follow up..
Should I upgrade my video card or CPU first?

I run 2 computers 1 for each acct, 1 is the same but has an ati radeon 9000 and in fullscreen i average 30+ fps in roid belts 18-20 w/2 clients running..
So I would recommend upgrading the vid card to a 9600 or 9800 if your ps can take a 9800"s pwr needs.

Yeah, grabbed a Radeon 9800 Pro 256 off eBayand looking at a 3GHz CPU.
We'll see how that goes.

a radeon 9800 will be more then enough to boost your gaming experience to more then acceptable

geeez dude u must have plenty of programs running if eve doesnt want to run on this config...
I had athlon 2600+, 256 RAM, GeForce3 Ti and it runnned quite well.
Just close some applications/processes and it should do fine.
But if u really need to upgrade buy a better gfx card instead of CPU. I must say that GeForce 4 is a minimum for today (i have GF5 and i sonsider it sux :P ).
Now i have 2ghz athlon, 1 gig or ram, geforce5 and around 20 running processes in background -> + eve and teamspeak often and i have a very good quality. U have even better CPU.
Or maby try to scan your computer with anti-virus software. I that wont help u reinstall windows because not doing that for a looong time may cause computer to slow down greatly. Aspecially whe u are not the only user and your family installs on it their s***.
Ah and try using new drivers (maby ure using standard system drivers... :?)

This also includes Directx 9.0c.
I kill all applications and unnecessary services - including my virus scanner.
I've applied all the tweaks as posted in the sticky and turn all my settings down to the absolute minimum.
2.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor and an ASUS P4VP-MX.
Eve install is new as of about 2 weeks ago when I nuked my machine and started over.
Also defrag automatically on the first of each month.
I turn the audio off as well, just in case.
I've even tried overclocking the card at one point.
I suspect there's something wrong with the card I have. Hopefully the new card will improve things.

Just a follow-up for those who might be interested..
I got the ATI card today and installed it and the latest drivers from ATI's website.
So far, I've seen about a 25% increase in performace. That is to say that I'm up from about 9 - 12 fps to 15 fps or so. As a percentage it's a decent improvment, but in absolute terms, it still sucks.
I have a 3 GHz CPU coming early next week which I will install to upgrade from my 2.4 GHz cpu. We'll see if that helps, but I'm not to optimistic.
I'm thinking maybe my bus speed is killing me. The 2.4 GHz CPU is running at 533Mhz, so maybe I need to get a cpu and board at 800 for the FSB.
Anyway, I'll update when I get the processor installed for those who might be interested.
Have a good weekend,

Very strange my friend. I have a P4 2.6 with a 533 bus, a gig of ram and an ATI 9800 Pro with 128 meg of VRAM.
Getting about 45+ fps.
Do you know what chip set your board is using?
Perhaps your RAM is underclocked? I've seen more than one board that defualts to 100 mHz for some damn reason.
Have you checked your apg slot speed? It also might be running at 4x by defualt. You can see that in the ATI control center.
It's pointless upgrading your CPU/GPU if you have some crapy SiS chipset.

As far as I can tell, the memory is clocked correctly. However, the card is running at 4x because that appears to the highest supported AGP Mode for this board. Perhaps that is the issue.
It appears to be a Via chipset. AMI bios.

Edit: AGP 4x isnt a performance hit either, youll only lose 0-1% going from 4x to 8x on that card. I'm thinking maybe my bus speed is killing me. The 2.4 GHz CPU is running at 533Mhz, so maybe I need to get a cpu and board at 800 for the FSB.

Something is wrong with your configuration. The FSB will not give you a significant increase.
I would run something like 3dmark 2003 and see if you can score in the normal range for systems like yours using the ORB to compare results. You can get 3dmark at www.futuremark.com . Dont get 3dmark 2006, youll score so low that you wont be able to tell if there's a problem.
Edit: Your FSB is not the issue, something is not right with your configuration with your FPS that low.
Are you running Full Scene Antialiasing or Anisotropic filtering? what resolution are you playing at?
You could be missing chipset drivers, thats an enormous performance hit.

I downloaded and installed the latest set of drivers I could find for my AGP driver. I also have the latest ATI drivers installed.
Playing at 1280x1024. Dropping down to 1024x768 doesn't seem to affect my frame rate - might improve it by 2 - 3 fps.
I've also implemented all the latest tweaks from these forums in the sticky.
Current settings on my graphics tab:
Windows: Fullscreen Color Depth: 24-bit color with 8-bit Alpha Resolution: 1280x1024 Depth: 32-bit z-buffer Depth Buffer Type: Z Buffer Refresh: 75 Hz
Multisample Type: Enable multisample quality Multisample Quality: 0 Present Interval: Interval Immediate
Widescreen, dither, and use LOD are off. Advanced Camera Menu is off.
Under generic, Trails is off, Sun occlusion is off.
Font WIdth is expanded.
Not sure what else to try at this point.
Virtual memory is on and Windows is managing it automatically.
Not sure how to check the antialiasing and filtering.
VIA CPU to AGP Controller is version 5.0.3442 dated 7/2/2003.
That appears to be the latest version I can find on their website.

I should probably specify that my poor frame rates are out in space. It holds at 40 or so in station, but I don't play in-station.
