What do you minmatar guys use for frigs and cruisers .. shield or armour reppers? It's obvious with Caldari and Amarr - but not so for Minnies.

To be honest, it has always been a mixed bag, however, CCP seems to be pushing the minnie ships in the direction of shield tanking based on newer ship bonuses and layouts. Check the Cyclone as an example. As such, I have trained up some armor tanking skills, but am focusing on shield tanking, and picking ships that compliment this.

Welcome to the world of the Minnie pilot. Wherby Cald=shield and Amarr=armour as a general rule of thumb with us each ship is different, and in some cases can be used either way. I am afraid as a minnie you will have to train both, as there will never be a set easy option. -----------------------------------------------

Rule of thumb, shield tank when going with artis, armor tank when going autocannons. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Edited by: Imorta Dragul on 27/01/2006 10:23:25 Minmatar can go with both, which is nice considering you aren't forced to give up a med/low slot, you can choose.
Not enough med slots?, go armor tank. Not enough low slots?, go shield tank.
--And of course you could also take both, though that can be overkill (cap kill as well) -Maddog1982

We do have a third option as well, remember, and that is no tank at all. We have enough slots to make good use of EW.
In general, you'll need to use both. If you want to optimize your training, simply train the two repair skills to 4; its very little training really for good tanking ability,
Cross training tanking is nowhere near as much of a problem as having to crosstrain guns and missiles. Although the new compensation skills make it a bit more of a pain to have to crosstrain.
Oh ffs, im rambling. Im hungover. Forgive me.

If you're an Autocannon junkie like me, you're quite lucky in that the only AC Shieldtanker rarely requires more than 1 Hardener. (Vagabond)
Hardeners are the most skillpoint intensive part of shield tanking, to use extenders and boosters requires a few rank 1 skills to be maxed out, but thats no big deal.
If you use Arties aswell, and fly a Tempest, then you're looking at full blown double training. .___. {O,o} /)__) -"-"- O rly? |

Although you can always *choose* not to fly certain ships or setups to avoid the need to crosstrain, I suppose.

Personally i have all ways gone with a shild tank on all mine ships, but have recently switched to an amor tank on my tempest and its a lot better, but for the smaller ships i would still say you are better off with a shild tank.

I fly 95% minmatar ships, and it really depends on the ship. A tempest can go either way (I armor tank mine) But look at the Wolf and the Jaguar, I fly both and armor tank the Wolf, but shield tank the Jaguar. Maybe you have to be skilled in both, as many people say matari ships take more skill points. http://home.comcast.net/~jasonn/atar1.jpg Custom sigs for 5mil - evemail me

flying minmatar means you get to have a reason to do a little bit of everything Its like you fly a phoon/tempest well, you fly nearly anything well

I fly 100% Mim and like most state it depends on the ship your flying. Amount of low slots and med slots basicly determines which tanking mode the ship is best at.
The Cyclone I actually run two configs. I run a AC config with 5 220's 3 med Nos's, 2 LArge Extenders, 1 LArge Booster and the hardner of choice with assorted low slot adds and a Range config with 650 Art's, normally a Therm and Em hardner and Tracking Comp and assorted low end adds.
I use the 220 config in deadspace and the Arts in open. Toss a Webber in as well on occasion. All T2 stuff.
My Wolf is always a Armor tanker.
Mim is all about skills. Not enough skills or lacking the right skills and it will always be difficult to tank and fight in a Mim ship.

Edited by: Naughty Boy on 27/01/2006 15:25:55 I'm really surprized at the amount of people saying that they shield tank their minmatar ships. I've been armor tanking most of them and it suits me quite well so far. There's the odd ship I shield tank, but considering all what has to fit in the mid slots usually... armor tank is the norm for me.

I shieldtank:
Jaguar - for PvE...gistii. Vagabond - extenders only, not a real tank. Tempest - barely, though. sometimes with ACs. rarely a full tank. Cyclone - sb/amp/invuln/etc
I armourtank:
Everything else.
Really, though, I dont run a true tank - rep/SB, hardeners, cap boosting - on anything Minmatar. Everything bar the Cyclone is either plate, plate+rep, or extenders. I cant remember the last time I used hardeners on anything but the Cyclone, either.

If you're going to be fighting Angels, then it's a good idea to Shield Tank.

Sometimes I use the tank that will have the highest resistaces against what every I'm against. If I'm fighting Ammar I Armor Tank. If I fight someone doing EMP/kin damage I shield tank.
The kind of nice think about minmatar. We don't have to waist lost of slots hardning if we know what we are agaist.
My 2 isk.
