Edited by: Random Thug on 28/01/2006 05:58:34 My plan initially was to do some hardcore mining to make fast cash, then get into PVP and never look back, but some folks I talked to say that if you start mining you will never stop.
Basically the theory is that once you start down the road to being an ice miner, you're just gonna keep going down the industry tree and never stop, and hence never be anything but a miner/builder/etc.
I'm not talking about skills, skillwise you can do anything, I'm just wondering if anybody here has switched professions from ice mining to pvp/piracy/merc.
I'm just afraid that if I mount a mining laser, I will go down that slippery slope and wake up 6 months from now wondering how I became a builder.
Does what I said make sense to anybody?

Its entirely up to you, personally I started as a fighter and found I can make damn good cash, averaging about 1.5 to 2 mil a day with relatively casual playing time (about 3-4 hours a day) If I pushed hard to do little more than hunt and do missions I could probably make around the 5 mil mark. Thats at Level 1 missions with only a month worth of skills and a mediocre destroyer. I tried mining and found myself waiting for the next wave of rats to show up to alleviate the boredom. If I want minerals for any reason now I just go tear up a Drone Complex and recycle the alloys off them.

The stereotype exists for a reason.

Or not..
This char started as a miner.. even selected the template 'miner'. Nowadays I PVP with it most of the time. As for the money.. well let us just say that a large barge with top skill in 0.0 is pretty lucrative.

So what's the verdict?
Stict no mining laser policy?
Or barge mining to supplement income for pvp?
Help me out here, I wanna know what you all think.

For what it's worth: my character is mainly miner/manufacterer. However, since I mine in lowsec, rats will attack me, as will the occasional pie-rat. Mining can be boring, so sometimes I go hunting rats. Moneywise speaking, I don't know what is best. I made a lot of ISK with mining, but when hunting, the occasional(rare) lootdrops have netted me more than 100mil ISK in sales.
It really is up to you. Are you telling us, you have not enough selfdiscipline to say to yourself: enough is enough, now I'm going to do something else! And, is it so bad to do 1 thing for 6 months and wonder, why have I done this? I think you must have had fun, or else why do it?

I don't think your basic assumption is true. Some people like mining and end up doing little else. However, some others try it and flee gibbering and drooling. Personally, I tried it and found it excruciatingly boring. I retried my Osprey and went on to other fields, and no, not roid fields . Do what you want, not what someone else tells you you have to do.

I aspecially agree here. People don't know what you can do nor can they check. So if you one day feels like you only want to fight. Join another corp, say you have no mining skills and go from there.
I choosed mining as starting profession. Focusing only on mining skills when it comes to industry. up to barge. And now I will start my gunnery / ship training. Basicly being quite good miner as base, but now focusing on getting myself into a megathron.
It's up to you. If your corp demands you to mine because to you have mining skills, lie to them. That of course is only a problem if you don't want to mine or end up in a not so generous corp.
EDIT:
Being little of everything will increase the time before you actually get really good at something, but before that you have the power to choose between diffrent things to do. And that can be very important since the beginning of this game can be quite boring once you get over the gorgeous graphics ;).

Do you suffer from bad character? Poor self esteem? Easily fooled? If none of these, then no, you're probably not gonna end up an industrialist. No, this is not a subliminal, cheap shot at miners and the alike. This is me mocking everyone who thinks they have to right to not be exposed to danger only because they have chosen not fight.

Heh this one time I was in a corp, started out as a miner (for money).
Fast forward 2 months later I ask if I can switch to the PVP division, they were like "Why don't you train to BS mine, you can tank for mining ops."
I was like "No you don't understand, I no longer wish to mine, I wish to fly frigates and tackle for the fleet, can I do that?"
After that point the CEO ignored me and I felt I had to leave.

I started as a fighter and I still am... But I started to do a litlle Research & Manufacture together with some occasional mining... (Only had to use a little time for mining lv4 to get miner II's and Production Efficiency to get started - don't need to go further down the line) When the missions gets a little boring I just go relax with my osprey on cruise-control and miners active... When the giant stones starts looking like people, I just go back to shooting NPC's.
Just do what makes you happy - I'm a Warrier with a hobby

I started as a miner myself.
Then I "saw the light" and was recruited into a small PvP corp. Once I got a taste of PvP, I knew that mining just wasn't for me anymore.
Having said that, all those mining skills do come in handy when I fancy making a quick billion to keep myself in shiny ships. So don't think that your mining skills will be wasted if you travel on the PvP route. There's not many PvPers in the game that can support their PvP habit without carebearing it up from time to time....

Rodge speaks the truth.
You have to pay for the PvP somehow. You can either grind rats in 0.0, or mine... both are equally boring. But, nice when you're not feeling too 'charged' and want to kick back and relax for a bit.
