I loved E&B and sometimes miss it. It had its issues, but they had a really cool developing storyline. I sometimes also miss equipping my ship with a chasis/engine/shield/etc. - Eve Online ROCKS, though. Very different system, and one I am loving.
But sometimes I miss E&B lol

When E&B closed, EVE got a big influx of new players, pretty much as is now getting from SWG.
Ask around, you'll find many ex players here.
As for me, I maxed out my JE then left for EVE and never looked back. ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

My corp, Celestial Horizon, formerly of Galileo, was the beachhead for the EnB invasion of Eve. At one point there were several hundred members of the corp, of whom about 99% were former EnB players or refugees.
From there The Merchant Marines soon followed and quickly grew to a considerable size as well. Many other guilds migrated over and spread out among the Eve universe. Many of them are still together, though not nearly in as large or well-known corps. And many of the original members of CLS have moved on to other corps or formed their own. Later, THEMM disolved due to internal problems.
So EnB players are everywhere in the Eve universe, you just have to ask around to find them.

I don't really miss it. Remember, EnB did stuff like close their official forums and foist them off on EB Portal so they could save money. I don't miss endless FPO-AP missioning. I don't miss petitions coming back saying "Thank you for your concern XXXX, The Sims Online Staff". I don't miss the fact that EnB had hyperinflation and no working market, but eve does not and does, respectively. I don't miss RiP hogging the warder. I don't miss Lageron's Gate, Lagtares, and Lagurn. I don't miss having to ***** that Lagasus was the red haired bastard step child and for the longest time had less resources that caused severe lag issues. But really most of all I don't miss it because in general because many of the same people there are here, such as Weird and Pottsey (still obsessed with shields) and all the others we know, so it doesn't seem like much has been left behind.

It just seemed to me such a waste. Electronic Arts (I believe it was them?) is SO big, that they jumped on the MMORPG bandwagon and shoved tons and tons of money into "The Sims: Online" and when that turned into a fiasco, what did they do? Axed successful MMORPG's like Eve & Beyond. The quality dropped, the forums moved, and the game was slowly dying thanks to EA... they wanted to try to keep a game like Sims Online running and axe a good Sci Fi game.

See though, I wonder sometimes if EnB wasn't closed due in part TO EVE. The mechanics of EnB in it's final release version were basically EQ in space, remember. (I always got the impression from reading the backstory and looking at certain screenshots and videos that it was initially supposed to be a far different game, but that's another thread.) Therefore, I wonder just how far the game could have been expanded in terms that a lot of sci-fi fans would want. Carriers, heavy capital combat ships, player-owned stations, etc... what function would these serve in an EQ-style game? And how would they function? I think, in addition to everything else, the devs of EnB simply realized continued game growth was unsustainable, especially compared to the rising giant that was EVE. Seeing that, I suspect the devs and the EA brass just decided to cut their losses and run.
Anyway. Celestial Horizon is the most prominent "refugee" corp that comes to mind immediately, but like F'nog said, there's a LOT of you guys out here making the universe a more interesting place. (I've always found it wonderfully ironic that the refugees from a "carebear" space game ended up creating several of the most powerful corps in EVE.) -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

EnB taught us how to camp like nobody's business.

Rumour has it people are trying to bring it back to life. EA makes the call tho.
Hows about one of those flashevent or whatever you call it : A sudden influx of E&B fans dressed up as your typical nerd go and camp EA HQ for a couple of hours then dissapear again

Yeah I remember good old EnB, there are certain things I miss about it as well but overall EVE is a better game, more indepth and allows you to do a lot more. But I do miss EnB, my good ol' Progen Warrior. :)

The thing I miss most about EnB is being able to get out of your ship and walk around. Of course, that wasn't in the original design, so it never got that developed, but it was still cool.
That, and the voice acting was why I joined. When they killed the voiceovers, that's when I left.
Curse you for destroying EnB EA!

Hmm, missiles on a Progen? Either your memory is off or you gimped your warrior
Terran were the missile users, Jenquai had lasers, progen had projectiles.

D'oh, you're right... but I believe you could arm any race with any weapon, no? It's just they were better at a certain type then the others. But you're right, it was projectiles... I remember a lot of Progen players were annoyed because they just wanted lasers because ammunition cost money... but it was definetely worth it.

Edited by: Sanguinous Rex on 29/01/2006 04:18:04 If EA or some other company picked up the rights to Earth & Beyond, worked on it to improve graphics (they were sweet then, but they could be even more awesome), work on the game to add more places you could walk in (instead of just a few starbases that all looked the same), and more planet surfaces, created a viable PvP system, etc. would you play the game again?
I think I would.

I used to play this game ... very carebear but also quite cool in its own way. I remember the first Christmas with EnB .. people sittin en-masse in Saturn outside one of the TV stations with a high lvl Explorer ganged. Everyone sitting there watching the Santa channel waiting to see where he showed up ... -TT

Each race could only use lvl9 in their native weapon, but you could use any weapon (restrictions permitting) But most the best weapons that had the good buffs were limited to their native race (Smiter was terran only etc)

One screenie on page 3 makes me realize what I miss most of all from E&B and I wish Eve had... bridge/cockpit views!
It was so awesome being able to play/fight/mine from the bridge if you wanted... made you feel like you were really IN the ship.

Edited by: Kyozoku on 30/01/2006 06:42:10 I pre ordered enb but found out my gfx card wasn't good enough to play it. When I eventually updated it I started playing it and they cancelled it 3 months later.
I loved the game for the short time I played it though. My corp from enb the british space corporation moved to eve but I never joined em and don't know if they're still around.
The one thing that really ****ed me off about it though was that you could name your ship but other people couldn't view it. My character was named Mr.T and his ship was called the foo' fighter but nobody knew how witty I am.

Jenquai had less turret slots than Progen and couldn't utilise Projectiles at the higher lvls like the Progen could (the cap lvl on item use was lower)... so how could this be right? -TT

You just don't doubt Pottsey when it comes to talking about JEs and projectiles. He knew his stuff.
Me, meh. I don't miss what the game actually was, I just miss the atmosphere it created and what it could've been. They could've done so much more with what they had, but chose to throw it all away to create EQ in space.
It was the potential it had that I mourn.

I used to be JE but I was beginning to lose interest when it became an endless level grind. I sort of gave up on it when I moved elsewhere. Two months later I saw Eve in the store and picked it up. Been in game now since Jun 03. Best move I have ever made. I cancelled my EnB account and never looked back.

Found EnB in fall of '02 about two months after it launched. Played a Progen Warrior, Terran Trader, Terran Enforcer. Most of the older members of Pukin' Dogs met there and switched to EVE in beta7 when the widespread invites went out. There's quite a few corps still ingame that I recognize from Andromeda server... British Space Corps, and a few others.
EnB was such a waste, but ultimately failed because Westwood/EA underestimated the ability of players to get to endgame content. After about lvl100, the grinding got too tedious, and what few hunting spots were available were camped 24/7 by 90% of the rest of the game. I remember looking at the EnB system map at some point and counting something like 60 systems ...
But I still miss killing Red Dragons.

Heh. Target, warp, prospect. Target, warp, prospect. Target, warp, prospect. Targetwarpprospect. Targetwar... where did those three hours go?!
And yeah, the fields with an actual element of danger were the best -- never knowing if you could ninja that bit of precious ore before catching aggro.
