I haven't done this so I don't know the answer. Can you mine directly into container or do you have to have it go to your cargo hold and transfer it?
How do you direct it to the container if you can mine directly into it?

you have to manually move it from cargo to container

Yeah, just jettison your first load and rename the container if you wish. I wouldn't name it anything obvious for cargo stealers to make out, but I do put the time I jettisoned it somewhere in the name i.e. "babytoys05" for 20.05 game time, that way I know to get it emptied in about an hour.
I also try to set myself up in a position to be able to hit 10-12 roids so I can fill that sucker up and have a good haul when it comes time to bring out my hoarder.
You may know all this, but I thought I'd post in case I could help you out.

What about using those secure containers that you can buy, is it possible to drop one of those in space then dump your cargo into there, or is that less efficient to do? I just wonder since you can at least put passwords on those so thieves can't take them, or can they still steal those too?

The biggest secure can can only take 3300m3 of ore. THose that use then sring then aound the belts so that they can mine ito one or another. When you get a lot of peeps doing that you get the massive amount of cans that litter some systems. Its bloody anoying actually
Tio anchor a can you need anchoring 1. they also cannot be anchored withing a certain distance of one another.
Personally I jetcan mining. I havent had my ore stolen on me more than twice. just mine in a low pop system.

Jetcans (the canister anything is put in by default when you say 'jettison' on an item) hold like 27000m3.
This is a lot. A damn lot. The largest secure crate only holds 3900m3 or so. However the trade off is that jetcans will explode in about a half hour to hour if left unnamed, and over an hour to two if named. Be warned!

Secure containers are very limited in where you can place them. They need to be further away then 5000 meters from another object. Near gates it's even further. So you cannot place a few next to eachother in a cushy spot. Oretheft is not such a big issue, especcially in lowersec systems.
1 nice thing you can do with secure containers: they increase your cargohold enormously. The huge secure conty takes 3000 m3 space, and gives you 3900 m3 space... ----- FreeHansje

Secure containers can be 'jetisoned' and used anywhere, they just can't be anchored everwhere which 'locks' them. And they are a great way to expand your cargo hold (they use some sort of space-time compression to fit more stuff).
I've also heard that if your ship gets destroyed, the containers and the stuff inside them will survive...but I don't have verfication of that.

Hm...this opens new possibilities. But on not being able to anchor it: an ore-thief can stil scoop up the sec_can. She can't do anything with it, but that doesn't help you, the owner. But admitted, it may make an orethief rethink her intend. ----- FreeHansje

I can confirm that this is not correct in my experience. Having scooped many unanchored giant secure cans, I have been able to access and remove anything in them once scooped. Scooping them does not flag you for stealing. The giant cans themselves sell for about 250k each.
As I believe someone once said of killing haulers, it's equally true of unanchored secure cans; "It's like the bonus level where nothing bad can happen, only good things." -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |

Does this mean the original owner had not set a password? Can you set a password while not anchoring? Or could you open it despite a password being set?

As I understand it, any password set is cleared because it becomes your property once scooped to your cargo. -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |

How do you see if a container is not anchored? When I check the Info, all I see is that it's password protected or not...?

An anchored container has red lights on it, unanchored have green. Use "Look At" to check. -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |

What do you gain when mining into containers? I have a bantam with pretty limited cargohold. If i put my ore in containers, i can fill it with 27000m3 but then what? Doesn't i have to empty the can into my bantam when i want to empty it, or can i transport the entire container? If that is the case, how do i do that?
Im sorry theese questions are stupid but i have only been mining for a day, im sure there is a helpful soul out there that are willing to help a confused newbie.

People use large Industrial ships to empty the container in one go. -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |

Normally you would pick it up with an industrial ship or freighter. They have much bigger cargo rooms, but even then a small freighter will have to fly 3 or 4 times to get everything.
What we do in our corp is that 2 or 3 people are mining into the container, while another member is hauling it back to station. And I guess that's a standard procedure for a lot of corps. If you want to do it solo, you have to go and switch ships. Alternatively you could get a 2nd account and traint it just to haul, but that costs money and is not for everyone ;)
