Edited by: Pinstripe Giamatti on 29/01/2006 16:38:33 Any recommendations on one versus the other? Seems like the feature sets are pretty close, but I've seen a few older reviews that give Ventrilo the edge on sound quality. Is that still the case, or is Teamspeak comparable?
Also, any recommendations on good-quality free or low-cost hosting? We don't need more than 10 slots.
Thanks. |

If you only need 10 slots, why not host a server for one on one of your own pcs? Thats what I do with an Enemy territory clan, it's quick and easy to set up, and saves you lots of money.
Teamspeak is my choice :) ----

I thought of the self-hosting option, but I'm not sure anyone in our group has an ISP that will permit it. Mine is very aggressive in snooping around.
Can you tell me why you prefer Teamspeak? Better sound, features or what? Thanks.

Imho, Vent has much better sound... waaay clearer.
However, I've heard that Vent also uses a bit more system resources and, afaik, is more expensive to rent. include 'clue'; if ($youdontliket2prices == 1) { $dontbuyt2 == 1 }; |

Edited by: Maya Rkell on 29/01/2006 17:06:37 Vent has a 5-user limit on self-hosted servers.
Anyway, the reason Vent has a "higher sound quality" is it uses a higher bit-rate codec by default. This is better quality, but uses more bandwidth. (The TS default is far more 56k-friendly).
For features, TS wins hands-down.
Vent is more expensive to rent because of its dumbass liscencing policys.

Edited by: Pinstripe Giamatti on 29/01/2006 17:52:39 Thanks for the add'l info.
I don't think that anyone in our group is on dial-up, so that should not be an issue if someone has the ability to self-host.
If the Ventrilo sound advantage is due to a higher-quality default codec, does that difference go away when using a higher-quality codec in TS?
Sorry for all the questions...

I thought Vent had an 8 player limit for the free liscence..
Either way, Vent has clearer sound, but Teamspeak is free and I prefer the layout and customizability of Teamspeak.
Ultimately my corp uses TS because it's free, we have a good, dedicated host and we can have all our couple hundred WoW members (we're multi divisional) and our Eve members easily on the same server.
Not that you can't do that with Vent.. but it's free with TS and just in general it suits our needs more. -------------- Porter Hadlend

Hmmm, maybe I will just try TS and see if my ISP busts me. I assume that I can use a static-to-dynamic mapping service like DynDNS to have everyone connect? My IP is assigned dynamically.

Oh and as far as the codecs are concerned..
The best TS codec out there, at least on our server is a Speex 25.9 Kbit codec. We use this or a slightly lower Speex codec on all our channels. It'll hammer someone on Dialup, but we don't have any dialup members..
Regardless, almost invariably Ventrillo will have a better sound quality.
All said though...the quality of Teamspeak is NOT bad. It's not like you can't understand people or anything and we've been using it to great success for years now. It's very clear. You just don't get as true a representation of someone's actual voice like if you were on the phone or in person, that you might come closer to getting with vent.
I'd still say TS > Vent for most corps. -------------- Porter Hadlend

I would assume so. I'm a server admin on our Teamspeak, but I'm not the owner and the SuperAdmin takes care of that stuff.
But with most things there is usually support for that. -------------- Porter Hadlend

Thanks.
I have used gamedaemons for TS hosting and have no complaints. TS has a pretty interface and is perhaps easier to set-up channel commanders (not sure as I've not used them)? My personal preference however is Vent as I've noticed a real difference in sound quality. The price at the above company is ú2.80 ($4.95) per month for a 15-slot server - longer the contract the cheaper the price so some room for future expansion. Either way have fun :)

Hehe, I found this note on the TS FAQ regarding dynamic IP mapping: "Don't expect support on this here. This isn't a DNS FAQ."
