you pay isk per share, you hold onto shares every month a percentage of the outposts takings is given to the share holders as dividends. e.g. 600k per share dividend 30 x 600,000isk = 18 million isk a month dividends payout for 30 shares. The price of the shares themselves should also increase the original iss marginis outpost shares sell for anything upto 50mil per share (they were 10mil per share when purchased when the outpost was 1st built.)
obviously 600k dividend pershare per month is a guestimate and you may get more or less depending on how well the station does.

Wow, I am trying to understand the shares thing as well. So if you bid 20 mill for each of the 30 shares then you would be bidding 600 mill in total and if you recieved for example 18 mill per month dividend then the shares would be making 100% profit after 2.7 years. Is that the right figures?

Your math is correct. Now refigure it with numbers that represent history of payouts. Closer to 400k each share each month
Shares are for the rich who have more isk than they know what to do with, and I assume they like to collect things too.

ISS shares are a long-term investment in much the same way as EVE is a long-term game. If you want instant gratification, click here, but just to warn you, it sort of gets crappy after level 60

Hopefully you dont **** of some major alliances, so that they come and attack your fine Outpost with a couple of dreads. 
Btw. if you sell all of your 3400 shares for that Outpost for a price of around 20 mio each incl. the offices, should be a nice profit ... interesting business.

ISS would not choose to build an outpost in a place that does not have support of the surrounding alliances. I can assure you that the alliances you are alluding to are significant shareholders in ISS Borealis.

All 3400 shares were sold in the original IPO. These sales are therefore secondhand. All holders of ISS shares are eligible for dividends, whether they be secondhand owners or not.

If ISS does not have control of the asset, ISS would of course not be able to pay dividends. However, the IPO process was engineered so that the surrounding alliances all have a stake in the outpost in the form of shares. Now, this wouldn't stop RA from roadtripping up to Pure Blind to blast the outpost out from under the ISSN, but hopefully it go far to keeping relations with G, IRON, and PA friendly.

It's not like we just place these outposts willy-nilly. These outposts are built in close coordination with the political powers of the area to benefit all the inhabitants of the area.
