i remember poping a galante one extreamly fast. before i could type in local "lol you fool, not when im around. ill let you live if...." pop. DOH

I tanked a laser apoc at close range with my impel for some minutes and we both have very high skills in lasers and armor tanking. ------ BlogÖ WTS Core-X EM hardener |

I haven't tested my bustard, but my crane survived a proph trying to gank me at a gate, and I didn't have an EM hardener on at the time. If you actually set them up to tank they work pretty well, otherwise, they are just another industrial that will pop rather quickly.

My alt's mastodon can tank a bs for a couple of minutes.. deep space transports not the blockage runner this is :)

Those ships were not designed for "tanking". They were designed to give you enough time to run for the hills if the boogie-man shows up. Although, since the question was how well they do vs a player Battleship..
heard that IMPEL can tank pretty well.
I've witnessed an IMPEL used as "bait" and then scrambled the pirate Crow that showed up. Crow pilot " um thats... wierd" bout 3 seconds go by three ships warp in blast mr crow into next week.
Its possible that a few of these ships in this class can survive a single player battleship barrage more than 2 and a half minutes. Given that the Transport ships skills are maxed and the Battleship player isn't maxed out on damage potential.
But the real question is why would you want to.
Personally, I use these ships to move cargo around and run if I see a fight coming.

i'm getting ganked in empire space so i need something stronger to move stuff around. just looking for something that can last at least 40 seconds with a passive setup.

No, they are looking for something that will haul some stuff with a enough tank to sprint to a gate though a 2-3 ship gate camp. And I am looking for the same thing to make run through the Curse. :)

Here's what I can currently tank in my two Gallente Transport Ships:
Viator - 1x Battleship, and a few small escort craft. Way more than what I need to get into warp or thrust 15km to a gate. Especially at 4,120m/s speed. 
Occtator - 2-3 Battleships and support craft. I can make it the 15km to a gate easily. Even if webbed. Don't use AB or MWD and go for full tank with max resists. Nothing like a Tech II battleship hitting you for less than 25 damage per shot! ROFL
Please bear in mind that I just about have every skill maxed for defense (Currently just over 24 Million Skillpoints), and Transort Ships Level 5. __________

Cargo space, cap injectors, and cap boosters are your friends. 
The Impel is the super tanker of the lot, while the Occator I think is at least nearly as good, while the shield tankers just suck.

Viator:
Low Slots: Named Nanofibers for Agility, or Named Overdrives for S P E E D!
Mid Slots: 10MN MWD II, Shield Recharger II, & Cap Recharger II (EXCELLENT for fast shield/cap recharge while cloaked). :-)
High Slot: Tech II Cloak
Transport Ships Level 5. (Faster Activation and Reduced Cap Use of armor reps).
All Navigational Skills Maxed at Level 5.
All +5 Speed/Agility Implants (Expensive, but worth it!)
Exact Occtator Setup - CLASSIFIED!
I'll suggest that you should fit a Medium Armor Reparier II (or better named one that repairs even more), beef up your resists, and go for INSANE cap recharge.
That's as close as you are going to get to my Occ setup, but rest assured that it can tank a blasterthron, autotempest, gankageddon, and a few support craft if setup correctly... while flying dog-ass slow, and absorbing unbelievable damage while webbed, and just laughing your ass off at 3am in the morning that they can't break your tank while you are carrying a Billion Isk worth of minerals. 
My Obleisk can carry a lot more, but my Occtator is one tough-ass ship!

I dont have a tanked one, i just have a blockade runner, and the idea behind that is i warp before anyone can lock me or indeed that if one or two do that they cannot scramble me.

Hmm... look!.. my Mastodon has almost the same shield and armor as a Claymore (Tech 2 battlecruiser).
... hmm that's nice, it also has almost the same resists as one, and bonus for shield boosting (5 % against 7.5% per level).
On top of that it has a 5% bonus per level using less cap on shieldboosters.
So, yes, it tanks pretty damn well, but can use no guns/launchers at all(as it should be).
So it can sit there and take dammage for quite a while, before the cavalerie warps in.
