maybe it's just the laptop I'm running on is underpowered for the game...
The screen blinks like crazy, every few seconds. I can still get into the game, but it's totally unplayable. There's no mouse either...
update - by switching out to windows and back I managed to get control for about 10 seconds...

I also have the same problem. I just got my account set back up and noticed my computer was forced to do a memory dump and restart due to a critical error. I came here and saw I needed to update my drivers. I now have the newest Omega ATI drivers and I have the flicker problem.
For the record computer is:
HP Pavilion zv5000
512 RAM
60GB HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000IGP graphics
fully updated WinXP

Which ATi drivers are you running, there are known issues with the 6.1s, changing back to the 5.x drivers should alleviate your problems.

update - tried adding another 512mb of ram, didn't help any
I had the same problem on laptop. Check out this solution, it helped me indeed, it's really worth downloading 17 mb  :

Oh right, I'm using the Omega drivers with catalyst 6.1, going back to the 5 series should help? ill try it thanks.

Well, Actually it is already sticky by the name "Solution for 'black screen flashing'/'show info'/video/crash problems ::BUILD: 2.09.3805::" but too many flood there - kinda hard to find out what problem is being solved
