I feel I must let you in on a little occurance that has recently taken place, and in the event this is deleted you may still find it through www.eve-search.com cache. The reason my post is titled so is because another corporate mate of mine has already had his posts on the same subject deleted from rather inocuous library (who reads the library, right?) threads and even though I may very well be banned for this but cannot idly stand by in the face of such actions.
Earlier today Istvaan "Hellgremlin" Shogaatsu has been permanently banned from eve forums and subsequently canceled his account. This may not matter all that much to the casual reader, but perhaps it should because istvaan has contributed to the game over the past five or so years in an amount that both deserves and has in the past received acknowledgement, both due to his contributions to the game's design with ideas since the beta forum days, his stories for Eve Chronicles on this website, his written material for eon magazine, his participation in the UQS heist saga, which has brought many new players into the game and raised the game's profile as the final frontier in uninhibited social interaction within a MMOG. Indeed, to many people out there Istvaan Shogaatsu may very well be the only thing they know about eve.
This, on behalf of ISD, is not just 'shooting yourself in the foot' but 'blowing the whole damn leg off', and if I'm banned for stating this out loud, at least I'll go out with a clear conscience.

WHAT?!!!!!

WTF is ISD doing banning Istvaan?
I mean sure he's a bit inflammatory, but banning Istvaan is like banning SirMolle. -- Proud member of the [23].

Might have something to do with the fact it's hard to post new stories (why he plays eve) if you're banned from the forums..

Yeah. This will probably get deleted, since NO-ONE CAN EVER DOUBT THE ISD. That rule, all alone, is one of the main reasons why ISD's Moderator Squad can so easily be confused with a totalitarian militarist state.
Originally by: Raem Civrie Istvaan just got permabanned from the forums, and is cancelling his subscription as an expression of his dissatisfaction. Unless something changes, Chorus of Angels will never see the light of day.
Draconian Mods ftw, the very reason he hosted his stories off-site.
Posted in the library forum, earned him a 72 hour ban.

I have never had direct dealings with Istvaan (that I know of ) but his amazing stories have been an inspiration and a joy. His antics as a crime boss have managed to actually bring some class to the corp thieves in Eve.
I know it is normally against the rules but in this case we ae talking about one of the most prominant members of the community and in some ways and ambassador for Eve. Why was he banned? The Istvaan I have read about and whose comments I have seen surely knows to stay within the forum rules? what could he possibly have done that got him banned rather than just warned?

To the OP: It makes next to no sense to post what you posted, as you didn't provide any details at all. To the reader it is unknown why Istvaan was banned. I am sure that he was one of the most active contributors, and it is at least conceivable that whatever lead to the ban was significant enough to ban him despite his prior contributions.

I can see reasons for why he was banned--but permabanning is a bit harsh. He's blunt and to the point, and often a bit scathing, but on the other hand he has contributed so much to the game and is such an important figure.
IMO the ISD should at least review their decision and give him another chance. -- Proud member of the [23].

Apparently, the reason cited for ban was "Thread hijack".

They banned him, permenantly, for that minor an offense?

If I understand it correctly, the "punishment" is automatic. First offence (or first two) are just warnings. Next time you get reported, 24h ban, then 48h, then 72h, etc. until it reaches permanent.

You'd be hard pressed to find any reasonable petition at petitionsonline that actually resulted in a change as proposed by that petition. Online petitions are useless.
Users have to stick to the rules, even famous users. I run a forum with 3,500+ users, 20,000+ threads, and 300,000+ posts, and there are always those who think that they are so important to the whole thing that they can go wild. In the end they are banned, and life goes on without them like nothing happened.

Thats pretty much it, minor offenses lead to permaban over the course of years. When the rules were written, EVE wasn't expected to last this long. I think I'm pretty close to permaban myself, as are a few others I know, who I would consider overall contributors to the community.

Man, that's awesome. Last week zincol got banned from the game for replying (in a normal manner) to a warning from a GM who demanded he remove a couple of 6 month old cans he had placed at some gate. The issue was resolved a day later but still.. what the hell..

If that is true then tha is nonsense. The guy was trying to sell at inflated prices and was puzzled why it wasn't selling and the guy who tells him why gets perma banned. If he started trying to sell his Volvo then yeah it's a hijack but that sounds like a very much on topic post.
The mighty ISD want to comment on this?

Maybe on your forums.. but this is eve.
The forums aren't the same at all as when Tank CEO could post.. or Jade Constantine, or even Joshua Calvert.
And now Istvaan Shogaatu's banned.. like wtf _______________________________________________

Or perhaps there are things that that have happened that the ISD wont tell you about. The Mods dont perma-ban people unless they have a good reason. So I would suspect he did something he really shouldn't have done.
And on the lighter side, I have no respect for him anyways, so good riddance.

As stated earlier in the thread, its an automatic procedure. Warning + warning + warning = ban. Even if those warnings are for trivial things such as this, or signature regulations.

I think we did loose a good player for something that I personaly feel is minor and trivial.
But do you really get a 24-36-72 hour ect before permaban and if so why did he push his luck? I'm not taking anyones side, but I'm sure all the fault is not on the moderators shoulders.
