I take it that your standing with a npc corporation or faction increases when you do missions from an agent belonging to said corp/faction. What does this standing # do? I know that if it reaches -5 that you would be kill on sight or something. (Well, something bad anyway.)
Also, what does 'effective standing' # do for agents?
Thanks.

Higher effective standing = Better rewards and missions in theory. Access to higher level agents
effective standing = base standing of agent modified by skills and missions you ve done.
If you get 6.6 standing with a corp they stop taking minerals if you refine at their stations.
High faction standing means access to more agents of that faction without needing corp standing. Instead of an agent telling his superior: this pilot is trustworthy, the `government`says you can trust this pilot.`

Great explanation; thanks.
Couple more things, my friend told me that if you put in most of your time into a certain faction or corporation for missions, you would also be getting - (Minus) standings for certain opposing faction or corporations. Will it reach to a point that I would not be able to raise those standings back again?
I remember reading something about that the Sisters of Eve is the only neutral faction or corporation that won't net you - standings (Besides from pirates like Angel Cartel.), but I also heard their rewards for Loyalty Points bite. Is this true?
Thanks.

IF you work for one faction you will **** off factions that oppose them.
Social skills like diplomacy etc will help fix this.
SOE doesn't have great locations or agents. You can work for one faction then do a few missions with another to balance it out.
Just avoid missions that target the opposing factions. For example, never do Human Cattle.

Boo on this advice. Human Cattle is one of the most fun (and rather challenging) lvl 2 agent mission I've come across! Considering the loot and rewards it's also one of the more profitable!
I'd say go for it, but be sure to wander across the void to the opposing faction and run a few missions for them as well.
