Why?
And while I'm at it, why does everyone hate on arty so much, and long ranged in general?

Yeah, but thats caldari, and most of caldari ships are missiles.
Gallente is primarily Hybrid guns.

Gallente are the hybrid race. Make sure you can handle sometimes being jammed. Get a ship where you can put FOF missiles on it. Good luck!!! Join us or die!!! |

The Eagle is a nice HAC for rail users, it can even be decently setup for blasters. But lets compare some bonuses:
Eagle:
Caldari Cruiser Skill Bonus: 10% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret optimal range per level and 5% bonus to shield resistances per level.
Heavy Assault Ship Skill Bonus: 10% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret optimal range and 5% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret damage per level
Deimos:
Gallente Cruiser Skill Bonus: 5% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret damage and 5% less penalty to max capacitor capacity for Microwarpdrive usage per level
Heavy Assault Ship Skill Bonus: 10% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret falloff and 5% bonus to Medium Hybrid Turret damage per level
The Deimos has +25% medium hybrid damage by default, and an additional 5~25% for your HAC skill. So up to +50% damage.
The Eagle has only the one damage bonus, and a bonus to optimal range, plus tanking bonus. It gets more from its bonuses for rails than for blasters, but that extra 1~2km optimal on blasters certainly can't hurt.
Looking at battleships, the issue is more clear-cut. Gallente BS have more turret slots, and turret bonuses. Caldari BS don't have any turret bonuses, instead having missile or EWar bonuses.
Hope that helps.

Edited by: Caleb Amnell on 03/02/2006 02:00:51 How about the Harpy is it a viable ship for rail users?
Also - what about the Thorax makes it a "close range ship" - why can't it be used as a long range?

Well honestly you have to remembe rin kali wich is projected to be coming out in about the next 6 months. "projected" being the key word here Caldari are in fact getting a Turret platform BS. Gallante are great if you want ot use blasters up th eyin yang and rain down insane punishment from close range. Caldari get optimal range bunses best used for railguns to boost optimal range. so your choices are
1) Gallante Close range devestation
2) Caldari Long range wich is in general safer fo ryou sinse you will be outside Warp scrambler range and Web range with how far you can fire with Rails on caldari ships

A toss-up between Caldari and Gallente.
Originally by: Caleb Amnell Why?
The Caldari have an entire line of rail based long range ships from frigates to battlecruisers with range/optimal bonuses. Some of which even have two range bonuses.
Merlin Raptor Harpy Hawk Cormorant Moa Eagle Ferox Vulture And a 'pending' battleship to be released in Kali.
Gallente ships are more biased more toward blasters and most of their ships have bonuses to falloff.
Atron Incurus Enyo Ishkur Catalyst Eris Deimos Astarte Megathron

Artillery are actually fairly popular for fleet engagements because they excell at burst damage and gradually edge down in overall DPS to railguns. That longterm DPS deficiency and their abyssmal tracking at close range kills their popularity with mission runners or NPC hunters in general except for a few cases.

Well I definitely want to play the long range game - I just find it a lot more fun then close range.

Aye long range can be fun untill enemies get inside your falloff range.. then you better hope you have antimatter ammo ready to backup bursts of damage untill again they get withint falloff then your pretty much screwed with having 0 accuracy anywher einside about 10-13km if your using antimatter ammo on most cruiser sized caldari ships

Or just fly one of the Caldari 'sniper' platforms and use Antimatter all the time. It's nice to be effective from 20km down to 5km, have a rock solid tank, and have some decent speed to boot with a Harpy.

Railgun is Caldari, which is what the OP asked for, only a couple of gal ships any use with rails.
Gal are more in your face blasters.

I am sorry for erm reviving this from 2 pages down but: People read bonuses... even if you dont fly stuff use the items database lol
There is no race for hybrid weapons supreme. Caldari use rails and Gallente use blasters clear as day.
It can work the other way around in a pinch but thats not the design.
The only inconsistency in this is the lack of a Caldari rail BS (coming soon TM) that has forced 425 lovers to use the Mega and attributed to the confusion :)
