Edited by: Jahn on 29/08/2003 14:18:43 Pirates...pirates...pirates. They do and should exist. They are haughty, braggards and leeches. They are a criminal underworld that is needed.
But....how do they exist so freely within state controlled systems...0.0 or not? Wouldn't these governments make blockades and scavenger points a priority by sending out hunters and patrols to 0.0 space if they own or border it?
I joined the game with full understanding of the pirate element and was looking forward to observing how they navigate through state controlled space. I thought I was going to appreciate their game play. I am truly disappointed. Piracy, though being a legitimate profession, is seemingly easy. Organized governments would make their life a living hell...logically. I don't see this happening.
I have heard and read of this m0o blockade for several days/weeks now and I have a feeling that this isn't the first....keep up the good work gentlemen. Wouldn't a government take this in hand and eliminate the blockade?
Where is the interaction and concern of these mighty governments? The Caldari with their profit driven conscience surely would not permit it....The Amaar with their grandiose exclamations surely would not and could not let a small pirate organization scuttle a trade route....The Gallente would be oh so bothered by the individual entrepreneur's rights getting trampled...The Minmatar would probably let them hang.
Surely shooting ship after ship and collecting corpses gets as cold as mining after a time. Where is the governmental interaction and content that would make a pirates life so much more challenging?
I don't know what is next but a bit more depth of story and content would certainly benefit everyone. The pirate corporations of m0o and rus are seemingly the only thing keeping the game and forums alive. My thanks to them.

Very good point, the only problem is Moo and other pirates dont like being shot at. Once when the game started they had a similar blockade in empire space and the GMs came after them in battleships, one of moo was blown up and the rest left thier camping of the system. Im pretty sure, though not 100% that they were even nicely asked to leave first, but wanted to stay and fight, if this is true then their complaints seem a little unfair in the circumstances. I htought this whole intervention was realistic, and if i was a pirate I would have welcomed it as excellent roleplaying, however moo complained on the forums about interference, and lots of none moo people complained too, saying the GMs should stay out of it. So i dont think you will see the governments of the nations doing anything from now on, which is sad.

I am concerned about the longevity of EVE if it succumbs to the PvP element only. I do not believe that this is what the architects intended.
My understanding is that CCP is somewhat or was somewhat surprised that players got battleships so soon. Too late to worry about that now. Give us content.

I was singing pirate songs last night... ugh.
For those of you who are too young to drink: stay away from any bottle that has "151" written on it when you become of age.

Actually, what CCP intended has not been fulfilled. IMO the PvP element would really manifest itself when players/corporations could construct physical structures in space to represent tangible assets and borders within regions - laying claim to 'territory'. Piracy is (and will be) feeding from the scraps.
The problem as I see it, is that far too many players would rather whine about the spectre of piracy than the reality. There currently exists a 'risk vs reward' mechanism within EVE which is in danger of being diluted into yet another PvE MMOG simply because a small, vocal minority cannot comprehend or assess 'risk' - preferring to believe in the non-existent concept of '100% Risk Free Guarantee'.
Wanted a dynamic game where players would be the dominant factors? You (nearly) have one! Instead of players whining at CCP to do 'something' about the pirates, why not do it themselves .. Ingame mechanisms for ingame problems.

Completely agree with you. Reminds me of Verant underestimating the resolve and innate competitiveness of Leading Guilds to uncover new game content on servers within EQ. Once CCP allow physical player constructs (Fountain, Stain and Venal alliance with teeth) in space then we should see much more dynamism and the PvP system working to its potential. Hopefully. Looking forward to it immensely.

Apart from the pirates, your posts seem inteligent and mature.:) which is a breath of fresh air.
Good points were made on the subject, of the community of eve sorting its own problems out.
This must be implemented, but not in the form of alliances. they, imo, dont work.
An eve police force may be a good idea. not like the anti pirate corps that exist atm. But something different.

Edited by: Indigo Seqi on 30/08/2003 17:08:25 Honestly I don't care a **** what the rest of this thread said, so I don't know if this has been mentioned before.
But:
PIRATING IS NOT EASY, THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT GET NAILED BY ANY TYPE OF PIRATES ARE EITHER APATHIC OR JUST REALLY STUPID.
KEYWORD HINTS: MAP, HEARSAY, BRAINS, SCANNER, ECCM, PROPULSION UPGRADES
It is indeed easy sitting on top of a gate, but making good money out of it for every person involved is not so easy.
Mining, trading, courrier mission, justaboutanything > pirating for cash.

Indigo,
Couple of points:
1) Pirating is as easy as you make it. Searching around through systems with static numbers of pilots etc... Keywords: Map, Pilot's in space, jumps last hour.
2) Considering you don't calculate the profit correctly is nobodies fault but your own. A laymen pirate would say "well I just blew up this ship and only got a single decent mod".
The FACT that you miss is the NET fiscal result. Let's say your corp is worth 200mil and another is worth the same. You take out a maller at a gate or mining op etc... While although you may only get 500k from the mods on his ship that corp has lost say 6-7 mil making the NET; your corp 200,500,000 and theirs 193,000,000. They have also lost time (get a new ship, hunt for new mods etc...)
I hate to say this but when pirating is EVER on par with legitimate business on an ISK per minute then something is wrong. The reason being that EVERYTHING taken/destoyed by pirates must be factored into the ISK per minute of the people being pirated.
So tbh you actually DON'T know what is more profitable because you are only operating with limited variables.
I think it was sinister who nailed the indy with 100k mega or some such? That's enough ISK per minute to up pirate averages across the boards.
Pirating is not for everyone some people are better at it then others and some get luckier than others.
So when you do a statistical average of ALL pirate corps earnings vs ALL legitimate venture earnings (with losses) then maybe I'll buy it, but until then Pirating is ONLY low profit for you.
It's like a guy coming to the boards and saying "I'm making 12 hop round trip mining scordite, solo, in an ibis with refining 1, so therefore mining is the least profitable business".
