I know this is subjective to individual tastes, but is Eve geared more towards the whole trading thing or combat? If it's a little bit of both, how limited is a miner/trader profession in the art of comabt and vice versa. I kinda need some direction before I begin a "real" character and really sit down with this game and fully explore it. I'd hate to select something that I hate doing. If a miner means that you have to shoot asteroids all the time then maybe I need to reconsider taking this direction. Any input would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks

I've been playing this game for 4 days. Consider this information to be totally false.
I've been doing a LOT of research on this same thing. It seems to me that if you want to be great at PvP then you should focus on combat related skills (and Learning of course) and if you want to be a great miner, then you should focus your skills on that. Seems obvious enough.
My problem is, I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. So I am going for a more "general" character. It may take me longer to get the levels of others, but I will have a good time regardless.
I think a miner with certain skills can certainly be useful to a corp in fighting PvP. Every little bit helps!

Doing too much of anything makes the game a bit stale for me. This goes for pvp / missions / complexes / mining / production etc.
I would suggest starting off training in shooting things. It will never be skillpoints wasted.

I've been playing this game for a long time and personally I think the best choice I ever made was to pack up and move down to .0 space...after I found a Corporation to join that is. Bumming around in Empire gets boring quickly, which is why some people dislike EVE because they think that's all the game has to offer. If you get onboard with a Corporation that controls a parcel of space in .0 the whole game evolves. You work to defend that region, either by mining for the Corp or engaging in PVP. Every time you log on there's something new in store. One day a PVP op may be heading in to enemy space to raid a station. The next a convoy may be heading to Empire that requires an escort. It's always changing. My advice to you, train up your skills in the field you want to pursue, then market yourself to a Corporation that you think meets your style.

If you don't like to get blown up alot (In PvP ALWAYS EXPECT LOSSES), you can be a carebear. Beside miners, you can also be a manufacturer. Buy blueprints, research it, gather the needed materials needed then build it for yourself or for sell in EVE market. You could also do trade runs which more profitable than mining if you do it right. ---------

I agree with the above, 0.0 is a totally new different experience, much more thrilling than anything else ! You can move to 0.0 even if you're a non-combat char...many industrial corps reside in 0.0 and need haulers and experienced miners to fulfill their needs !

All good advice. The only thing I'd like to add is that as you grow pick one, or two, fields that you like and become an expert in it. That way you have niche to offer a corp.

I would say Eve is geared more towards combat, but at a 55/45 split. This is due to the huge player economy. Many people play and do no tinvolve themselves in any combat, but supply the tools for those who do.
I mostly mine, but I have plenty of skills to run missions and complexes. That is what I do when I get bored of shooting roids. I enjoy sitting bavk and mining/chatting, but, like everything else, that does get old over time and I need to take breaks. That's when I run missions or run through complexes. I also just fly into 0.2 or 0.1 and go rat hunting. I get most of my rare ore by refining the loot.
It really is a matter of taste. As my skills get better, I will branch out into PvP. I have done a bit already and have replaced a few ships, but it was fun and it was a break.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Edited by: Agarta on 04/02/2006 16:30:02 You could try things out bit by bit as you build your character if you want. I'm a new player myself (7 days), and have tried out mining (.7), trading (=<.5), rat hunting (=<.6), and kill/courier missions (+15 quality level 1). Not only do you get experience in trying them out, but you also accumulate money as you go along trying to decide whether you want to specialize in a specific field or not.

So let me ask this - what shouldn't I start that I cant get rid of later? If I go miner, could I ever be a proficient fighter and vice versa? My free trial is slowly winding down and I'm still here trying to figure out what I should be. Even 2 weeks is a long time for me to invest. I'd like to choose a career path and stick with it when I officially subscribe to eve. I'd hate to start all over. I was never a big "alternate toon" type of person.

I'm new as well, but from what I've seen no skills will hurt you, if you get a bunch of industrial skills and you decide mining isn't your cup of tea, then you can just start training the combat skills. If you want to go back to mining the skills will be there for you. So, like others said, experiment a little, nothing will hurt you in the longrun (aside from longer training times if you don't get the learning skills, but I'm not the one to ask about that :))

You can't lose anything from learning a skill except time. You can start as a miner, then switch to a combat role. The only cost is time. Every character can learn every skill.
