When i was fighting last night i was bearly beeing hit (so and so misses you doing no dmg) but graphical it was, so heres a simple idea that can make EVE even better, if you make the guns miss graphical and carry on behind the ship ( but not do dmg to anyhting else behind it ) i think that will be great,
If you could go further, a light hit could be near the edge of the ship, and a wrecking could make a litle explosion or some debris fall off the ship ( depending on what turret is used ).
When damage is inflicted on the the sheilds perhaps insead of hitting the ship, you can see a distorted patch just away from the ship where the shield hardner and booster graphic is.
If any of these can be done, i would prefer the turret missing efcet to be primary, i can see how this might take alot of programming / editing models to get this to work but it imo its worth it :)

Agreed
I don't think it'd be easy to localize the shots on the target ship, but you might still be able to differenciate the severity of hits simply by changing the explosion types :
- A few sparks : glancing hit - An explosion : normal hit - Explosion + debris projections : wrecking hit
Or something similar.

well that all clientside : we already know when we get a wrecking hit since it shows us : the client just needs to translate that stuff to graphics

Different severities of hits would do well to show up different graphically. A lot of times those damn battle messages come and go too quickly.
Plus it'd just look cool.

While we're at it, I think it's about time that we see launchers at ships as well. Long due imo

they already do a bit of graphics on the shield, they'd need a bit of code to expand on it to make it register with hits, it shouldn't be that difficult, though users should have the option to turn it on and off for their system due to differing sys requirements, and it should be all client based to render to avoid lag.

True. Right now every hit looks the same, it's kinda boring.

It would certainy be more 'realistic' to see misses actually miss - of course you'd still have to have some decision on how the shot was 'terminated' (fade out?) at max range. Right now I'd settle for not seeing the explosions on your ship for missiles that you saw your Defender take down 5 seconds earlier (the log shows the intercept, no damage is taken, but the explosion effect still takes place, which is just wrong).

yeah, and to make it perfect you will see where you got hit with some "bullet holes" or explosion marks, etc.
of course this will make alot of ppl whine of the lag they will get, but hell.. MORE EYECANDIES

To the graphical lag thing, it could be optional like turret effects cant be turned on and off.
also when on stucutre haveing a bit more than a firey blob at the same point of the ship al the time, maybe as said above ^^ bullet holes, burn marks, bits of the ship missing ( part of the wing maybe ).
if the guns misses it could fade out at op-range + 4x fall off?
