I have to say, that the way skills are handled in Eve are far and away the best design for skill advancement and specialization of anygame I've ever played.
The full-time training really evens the playing field from the 24/7 power-leveling and the fact that specialization and re-thinking that specialization is easy, it just takes time... is brilliant.
I suspect that other games will be adopting this system very soon...
If nothing else comes from this game, the skill system alone is enough to put CCP in the inovators hall of game-fame.

I'd agree except for one niggling issue - I'd liek to see an increase in the skill bonus when training up from lvl 4 to lvl 5.
I'd like the bonus increase from level 4 to level 5 be double the previous bonus (i.e 10% not 5%).
Just makes training it a little more worthwhile.

Edited by: Discorporation on 29/08/2003 20:11:17 Training a skill to lvl 5 won't matter if you use if for general purposes. But if you plan to specialise in that area, then lvl 5 is mandatory. This because lvl5 in the basic skill is a prerequisite for the advanced skill.
With those, we'll have some real specialisation going..

I'm not sure I agree... for instant with refining efficiency. It's a small percentage difference between 4 and 5... but level 4 is pretty normal to find... at level 5, people seek you out for refining.... so your potential for profit does increase substantially with the time invested... even though it might not make much of a difference in individual cases.
The same is relevant in most areas... that last little extra percentage is never enough to make a difference on a case by case basis.. but in the long run, it can really add up.

I made sure I got the main skills to level 5 quickly - engineering, electronics, mechanics, gunnery, and then spent time on the skills related to energy/shields/speed.
I'd love to get surgical strike from level 4 to 5 but, to be honest, that extra 3% damage to all turrets isn't worth 22 days training
By the way, does anyone think that your large turret skill should be improved if you've bothered training medium turret to a higher level than the large turret skill requires?

Well, that depends if you use large turrets more then medium turrets . By all means, train them, if you use them enough to merit the increase in damage

It depends on whether the next patch drastically improves large turret damage/tracking to such a degree that medium turrets will be the 2nd choice (despite them getting a dmg/tracking boost too).
At the moment, people seem to be using medium turrets for PvP and large turrets for NPC.

Found it.
Just had a brief look but, if I'm reading it right, the only reason people don't use L weapons for PvP are because of their fitting requirements instead of the DoT etc?

I know I can't wait for those advanced learning skills you talked of before Discorp. Nowhere are they listed in any Dev chat, log or on the Nexis that a friend and I could ever find.
Would be good to see some in the very near future as long as the advanced skills don't equate to the same skill level in the end by nerfing back the prerequisits.
Prerequisit skill 3%-3%-3%-3%-3%= 15% Advanced skill 2%-2%-2%-2%-2%= 10% Totaling 25% you get anyway.
A BEATIFUL system was posted months ago by Ansuul in the skills forum. Not exactly sure how it went but it was something that made extreme sense out of the time it takes to reach lvl5. Something like....
lvl 1 3% lvl 2 4% lvl 3 5% lvl 4 6% lvl 5 7%
The greater the time the greater the reward for doing the time.

They're on the Nexus allright. But try Eve-DB.com, they have the cotnents of 1165 ripped and as such have all the Advanced Researching skills listed

Advanced Energy Grid Upgrades gives a 3% increase/level and is a rank 6 skill

Learning skills Discorp. Not just skills but LEARNING skills. Attributes. I believe your post was in reply to is it worth training up learning and other attribute skills to lvl 5. There are no advanced learning skills I've seen.

Edited by: RoToraTTack on 30/08/2003 18:30:18 Now all we need is a way to access skill training without having to start up Eve. Would be useful while on vacation or more importantly, while 'stuck'. -

I'd like a decent way of listing my skills and their attributes so that I can use Soltys' excel spreadsheets.
