Getting mining to level 4 is the most important one, that way you can use Miner II's.

I agree with the skipping of the small mining barge. The yield verses the time needed is not worth it.

it's not the time needed to train for it. If you want to use mining barges you'll end up with the skills for small one anyway. It's jsut that, for what 2-3 days? longer training you can fly medium barge. might as well save the isk on buying small one and spend it on medium one

I've got Mining 4, Refining 3, Caldari Indy 3, and my mining's fine.

I'd recommend you start Calderi:
Move to the bantam from your starter frigate the second that you can afford it. Equip 2 basic miners (or better if you manage to find a gaussian extractor in the tutorial like I did). Mine your way up to just over a mil in ISK while training up to CALDARI Frigate 3 (no others will work), ship comand 3, and as far in mining as you can get (go electronics if you dont mine too often and have leftover time). Buy and train Destroyer 1 and buy a COMORANT (nothing else will perform nearly as well) and Gaussian extractors until you have a total of 4. Once you get Electronics to lvl 3 buy the lowest level of CPU upgrade for around 40000 ISK then equip a fifth gaussian extractor.
You now have one of the fastest container-mining ships in the early-to-mid game so you can chew through an entire field worth of Pyroxerase in just an hour or two while a friend (one you really trust) with a Badger or other transport ship scoops up well over 500 ore per minute from your jetcans while mining a bit himself or if you are alone you can equip some cargo expanders and haul it back yourself though that is much slower. If you can get 2 Comorants on this along with a Badger to haul you can make about a million each per hour.
Once you get the opportunity train up Cruiser as high as you can and purchase an osprey. Rinse and repeat the previous method with your new Osprey which recieves a 20% yield bonus with each its 3 miner II lasers per cruiser level for up to a 100% increase in addition to your mining skill's 20% (25% if you go to lvl 5).
After you reach that point you'll know the next step in your operatin though you may not like it: low-sec space and 2-3 modulated deep-core miner II s (skip the first barge, your Comorant mined faster).

Edited by: randy andy on 06/02/2006 15:53:46 the others are right but i for one would go for your race Frigate and train frigate skill up as it gets your a better yeild if you are a get a bantam as this has a 20% bonus on yeild per frigate level so if you have 2 mining laser's it gives a yeild of 4 lasers on other ships there are crusier that have a yeild bouns on them id you have the isk and get the best yeild lazer's you can fit on your ship

That is why I recommended Caldari to him. Caldari ships are the undisputed kings of CPU. And while you could stay with the Bantam until Cruiser class I highly recommend not to do so because lvl 1 Cruiser Comorants actually give higher yield than Bantom's unless you have lvl 5 frigate skill, have 450m3 cargo space (as opposed to the 200-something of the Bantam), much more shield and hull HP, bigger capacitors, and on top of all that they can be easily converted to a NPC-killer in a few seconds without going back to a dock (not extremely effective so dont try it on below .7 security rats) so you can go in and clear out a field before mining. The Comorant is simply a much, much more useful ship. Its well worth the ~1 mil that it costs. Just make sure that you train CALDARI frigate, not necessarily your starting race's frigate skill.

Well I started as Caldari and that is what I did.
I went from the Batan to the Cormarant. I did this for the extra mining mounts and because I could also run better missions with the destroyer when I was not mining.
During that time I contiued to train up my mining/refining lvl's and started working my way to the medium barge.
Sent a month or more in the medium barge until I trained up to heavy barge. I am now training for the T2 barges, so it is just a matter of 100's of mills of isk to buy a T2 barge now
