I have been in this game a lot longer than you think. Only recently, has high sec piracy became commonplace. People have been playing for years thinking that carrying T2 BPO's and Battleship BPOs around in a hauler to 1.0 space is safe practice. Not any more.
And High Sec Piracy will become more and more available as time goes on. Myself and my associates take precautions. Not like those idiots that let the enemy know that they are being targeted.

Empire piracy is as old as EVE itself, and actually used to be a lot more commonplace than it is now.

The first thing I did when I started piracy was slap one of those on my ship because the element of surprise seemed very important. However I equipped it and locked my buddy and asked him if it showed me locking him and he said yes... sooo....

By Empire piracy, I assume you mean High Sec piracy. Perhaps it is as old as eve itself, but the raw anger, lack of understanding and sheer profits on a mass market scale has won many followers to the cause. ------------ Criminal EVE Guides Evil Genius 101 Guide |

Being locked u cannot hide, its the locking process thats hidden. Anyway, you activate your guns before target is locked for quicker action

what would a gang invite do? They cant attack you in high sec even if they are in your gang. The only thing that could suicide a freighter is a dread and frieghters dont drop cans. So there is no profit in even suicideing a frieghter

you declare war on your alt, your alt then invites the target freightor into their gang.
Your now allowed to shoot the freightor.

0.5+ Empire piracy used to be 'different', before CONCORD got stronger and sentry gun damage was improved, but it is not new and I don't see any evidence of it increasing.
Its always been there, perhaps only now are you taking a more active interest and noticing it more as a result. It certainly is not your idea, or your tactic, as you seem to allude to.

Yes, you are.
I've know of someone who lost a Freighter due to this very tactic.
