I remember when Eve online required skill to play.
I remember when you actually had to choose between tanking your barge, or fitting for max yield. You didn't get both.
I remember when probing was something that took a long time to get good at, and if you were good at it, you were indespensible to a fleet.
I remember when EVE catered to a more mature crowd.
I remember when botting was bad, and bots were banned, not encouraged by OKing pseudo-botting click replicating programs.
I remember when ISK scammers were banned, not rewarded for their contributions.
I remember when Eve was an anything goes sandbox.
Sigh.
Those days. Those days are gone.
Welcome to the new face of Eve online. The kinder, gentler game. Everything is done for you, and if it isn't, make enough of a fuss and it will be eventually. Is something against the TOS or EULA? Its fine as long as CCP gets their cut.
Im sure I had a point when I started typing...but damned if I can remember it now.
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

There there...
*hands OP a bottle of booze*
Drink this. You'll feel better, instead of bitter.
Good ol' days were lag, m0o, bugs, cavalry ravens. Nano, winmatar, BoB.
Today it's drone assist, Goons, TOS, Blink and ship spinning replaced by the door (and brought back, thankfully).
Tomorrow it'll be something else, but just remember to keep calm and rock on. Is it Hotdrop O'Clock yet?

Well, if you paid attention to the warp-speed-change doomsayers, the end is nigh.
Oh yeah, I remember Eve before supercaps, "snif". Eve was so much better then.

I remember when jumping through a gate carried the risk of getting stuck in it and you needed a GM to get you out.
I remember when warp-to-zero meant having 10s of thousands of insta bookmarks loaded 10 at a time into your BM list.
I remember when you might warp out of a belt, dock in station, and then get teleported to another station because you never actually warped away and got podded.
The good ol' days....

We at least are actively protesting the nefness with direct action, what we like to call 'non-consensual content-creation'. Now, if carebears (and CCP) want their F#$ing 'safeties', exhumer buffs et al and retaking cans without a suspect flag, then I have something special for them...

Not at all, not one little bit.
Still searching for what I was going for with that op though... so far, no luck.

Blackscreening every time more than one fleet jumped into a system.
There being literally two viable fleet doctrines in EVE.
Titan blobs doomsdaying all support ships off the field in the first 15 seconds of a fight.

"Good old days" my fat hairy Australian ass.
You know what I remember?
Ship tiers, learning skills, training one skill at a time, drakes everywhere, no missile turrets, and using rockets getting you laughed out the room.
I will not let some pissy tripe about GTC referrals distract me from the fact that Eve is one of the only MMOs in existance that's been continually improving over the course of its life.

But wait, those days are still here.
Eve still takes intelligence to play.
Not the hot and intense hype of youth, but the slow, methodical progress of patience and experience.

I remember when people considered fitting modules to a mining barge "skill"
I remember when repeatedly aligning your probes into a square formation and then clicking a button was considered "skillful" play
I remember when EVE's playerbase openly hoped that ganking would result in real life suicides and were considered "mature"
I remember when botters . . . . wait, have they EVER been considered in a good light?
I remember the OP thinking that he remembered ISK scammers were getting banned.
I remember the OP thinking that he remembered when EVE was an anything goes sandbox, except that I think the OP forgot to remember all the rules that kept it from being an anything goes sandbox.
*Sigh* I remember when people used to use a private diary for this kind of stuff, instead of posting it on the internet. I am not an alt of Chribba. |

Interesting addendum. Did you know, your brain intentionally adds more "weight" to good memories as you get older? One of the main reasons most people have rose-colored glasses about the past. Forgetting bad things and over exaggerating good things from the past is a defense mechanism of the brain. It's speculated that in clinical depression, that system is messed up, which triggers constant recollection of bad events and memories. The risk of having your day ruined by other people is the cornerstone with which EVE was built and we want to keep that (infact, this is much more representative of the consensus opinion within CCP). |
