***** Warning: This post contains a sleep-deprived and stomach-bug induced Rant. Read at your own risk. *****
Is it me or has external communication from CCP shut down over the past couple of months? The patch notes subsections have been completely cleared (we have a content patch due out this month - why are they empty?), there have been no devblogs on the new content for months (October in fact, and that was just the Drones and new NPCs).
A major content patch was released in December (RMR) with absolutely zero documentation, no insight into why you made things as they are (t2 ammo being one), why certain features were cut at the last moment, where all the missing modules are, why RAMs are now used instead of getting damaged, and god knows what else.
One of the things CCP is trying to push onto EVE is the whole concept of Gang-Assist modules. However, did you know that there has never been a post by CCP explaining how the system works? Or how the bonuses add up on command ships? People are having to spend 200m+ isk just to try and work out how the damn things work. Some people think you need to be in the same system, some say on the same grid. Which is it?
The confusion over Interdiction Spheres continues. Why don't they pull ships out of warp like a normal bubble - is this a feature or a bug? Why don't they stop ships warping that have already begin (like a warp scrambler)? Again, is this a feature or a bug?
The cloaked recon ships don't work properly when a cyno field generator and cloaking device are both fitted, dispite this being part of their role. Is this a feature to stop them from being overpowered, or is it a bug. If so, when will it get fixed as that's one of the major features of these ships?
How exactly do you assign your drones to another player while in a carrier? Why is the only documentation on the intracies of jump clones a player-made thread stickied in the skills forum? Why did you give tech2 plates a higher mass penalty than the best named, for the same amount of HP and higher fitting requirements? Why the hell can't you cancel production job? How long do killrights last? Why do they last longer then?
I could go on (and probably will in later posts), but the point I'm trying to make is that half the playerbase is confused over how all the new toys work, because nobody told us before they were released. Even if you had made devblogs a couple of weeks after with full details it would've been just about acceptable, but we're now one week into Feburary and all we've been told about is that our new playhouse is arriving. That's nice and all, but we wouldn't mind knowing how to use the toys in the playhouse.
I wonder how many bogus petitions have been filled since RMR launched just because the user didn't know how something worked? How many petitions over not being able to cancel jobs, because nobody told them you can't cancel jobs.
Ok, enough ranting now. I was just wondering if we're going to see the levels of communication and documention increase dramatically again (Oveur, I suggest you re-read your "sound-off like you've got a pair" devblog). CCP won the best company award on MMORPG.com due to how much the communicate with their subscribers. If you keep releasing bugged content patches with no documentation and keep up the communication silence, I doubt you'll be winning it again.

Edited by: Sarmaul on 07/02/2006 15:30:12 also, if you had told us the stacking penalty before RMR launched instead of making us work it out for ourselves, there probably wouldn't be the current mess of CPR vs Boost Amps, Damps vs Boosters, Disruptors vs Enhancers as it would've been spotted immediatly.

I think you've got a valid point, the level of communication is lacking.

I thought perhaps CCP were busy with Kali and the new server structure. But I had been wondering why it's been quiet lately. :< -----

I have to say, I totally agree with Sarmaul. This stuff needs to be documented properly. It's not just the new stuff though, documentation on some of the old stuff is pretty sparse too.
You're all probably buried under new servers and architecture plans right now but from the player's perspective we've heard nowt since RMR. One of the best features of this game is the level of Dev/Managemnt interaction and information for the players, let's not lose it as Eve becomes more popular.
We're only complaining because we care so much :D Hell hire me. I'll drop everything, move to Iceland and spend the rest of my life making documentation!!

Nothing changed much did it ?
There never has been a lot of documentation by ccp for anything, a lot of information comes from 3rd parties like the now dead eve-i and other player made websites.
Cheap tactic yes, but on the other hand its a challenge for players to try to gain an edge over other players who are less savvy in figuring out stuff.

check the devblog archive in the run up for cold war edition - loads of them on dreadnoughts, jumpdrives, freighters, outposts, etc. Now compare this with RMR. Mk2 project and new NPCs - nothing on carriers, titans, new manufacturing, recon ships, interdictors, new mining barges or anything else.

Edited by: Skarsnik on 07/02/2006 17:06:46 Sarmaul - I certainly didn't detect anything close to a rant in your Original Post. What I read was a well put critique of the the current situation. However I will point out one thing - Kierons current health situation. As your aware he was involved in an accident and is attempting to work using Dragon Naturally Speaking to help him to continue to feed us with info.
So if the Dev's are all busy with bug fixes and coding for Kali we cannot expect too much info to come from them at this time. But I will agree certain things do need some documentation soon.

I reckon CCP are busy enough. They are one of the best for info and everyone knows it. Either they are working on something to surprise us, working on the server upgrade-coding-thing, or they all went in Oveur's Ferrari to a spa somewhere in Iceland. Edited by: Ajax Thanatos on 07/02/2006 17:33:38 Edited by: Ajax Thanatos on 07/02/2006 17:33:09 Yes, I'd love to see some more ccp presence... Why not just hire an extra guy to type stuff up for us if they're so busy. That way we don't have to run around trying to figure out whats a bug and whats not and other such nonsense.
On the other hand it does help to strengthen the community -- having to help eachother work around ccp's shortcomings. I'd like to thank all the players that have donated some of their time by writing all of those helpful stickies and guides. Keep it up guys, this game has the most mature, helpful community of any that I've played thus far.

If they really loved us they'd have 'Hunt the Dev' day. One dev per region in low sec flying cruisers filled with tech2 loot. We'd give Oveur a BS, just because everyone wants a piece of 'em.
It would be like tag, only with prizes at the end. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. |

I believe much of the staff of CCP are still on Vacation and the offices are largely closed down.
Iceland is like a lot of European countries in the regard that it mandates a high amount of mandatory paid vacation time. I believe its 13 weeks in this case. We know the office shut down in july-august for 5 weeks after the Cold War patch, and it stands to reason that people would buttress thier vacation time with holidays off, so a good deal of the office probably is still on vacation from Christmas.
I'd expect a more normal posting schedule after the server upgrades.

Last times Oveur did blogs on upcoming content the only thing he got was multiple pages of whinage. Perhaps he fed up with that enough :) I mean who cares what people think, it'll be implemented anyways. NG R&D, drones or Rebirth, everything got huge negative feedback (yes, there was some support, but not too much), but it's still in.
So the logic is that if there is not much support in response to blogs like those, it's better to not do them at all, otherwise people will be saying that CCP doesn't listen to their customers :)
And I tend to agree with this tactic - if the crowd controlled the EVE development process through blog responses, we IMO wouldn't have the marvel that EVE now is.

It seems since RMR and all the problems they have had they have not talked much. I'd say they are stressed and working pretty hardout to fix the problems in RMR. This is the only time i've ever seen them taking a break from the forums and dev blogs. -

I'm kind of frustrated about the lack of documentation and communication, especially about bugs and lacking features. Sometimes the developers will reply to you if you post a thread, but that's not enough. _________________________________________________________

You make it sound like European companies only work 80% of the year, which of course is BS. Employees may take vacation time off, but any company, especially one that offers a round-the-clock product like CCP, will make sure all key functions are constantly manned.
If communication has become less, I would blame it more on the allocation of resources to development, patches and bugfixes than skiing holidays

I am hoping for just one little blog: an actual date when they are going to install all their new hardware. As I surely need to put a very, very, long skill training in progress.
Other than that: What 'rant' Sarmaul? I read a well written post about a lot of issues that are dragging on and on and on and on...
Updated Newbie Tutorials are all nice and hunky doory, but the older player base would also like to know what the new toys do, don't do or work without finding these things out for ourselves. _

there's a fine line between a well written post and a long-winded rant, and I have a tendancy to cross it by several miles

An excellent post, to be sure. More documentation about the game would be a huge boon. At this point, I'd consider it almost required before any more complexity is added. Perhaps a CCP-managed community wiki or something. Make it so you have to log in with your account to edit the wiki; it would be easy to enforce.
