Just got back from my local EB games store. I stopped in to check out the popularity of EvE. The store itself is located in a very large popular supermall and is always busy.
Of the '24' box's they got in at release ( I pre-ordered and called daily)'16' remained. The computer shows 2 people bought 2 copies, 2 people bought seperate copies and my 2 copies.
3 copies of the game are in the display cabinet and the rest remain in the back room.
So in almost four months only FIVE people have bought EvE at this store.
Enquiring further I asked how many copies are available in the City. The response I got was TOO MANY. The game just isn't selling even with a reduced price of $24.99 Canadian. That's less then $20.00 U.S. for people that don't know. I offered to buy all the copies in the store if they would reduce the price to cost just to unload there stock. The manager will get back to me but the clerk said he could only sell me 2 copies due to vender rules.
The game is in the bargain bin and not selling. Sales at this store show 3 out of 5 people purchased multiple accounts (or bought to give someone).
EvE is not recommended by any store employee in fact quite the opposite.
Is this game going to survive on multpile account users? What happens when they pack it in? Close E-Bay off and you will lose half your population at this rate.

Best Buy employees are reporting the same, game at full 50 dollar price, it isnt moving off the shelves, and the employees recommend other games instead.
Shame the game didnt finish its beta before it was forced to be distributed (finance issues most likely) ohwell UO is still there to go back too. ...fear the evil monkey in your hanger...

Yep - you can't actually find this game on a shelf in the UK. Game is about the only online retailer that has it - and a little birdie tells me that they had a nice little "no-sale, no fee" deal, but even so they want the inventory space so are attempting to return their boxed product. Whether that is true or not I have no idea.
Jash had it right some weeks ago. Time to call in people who know how to run a MMOG. Seriously.

Well word gets around, yes Eve can / could have been a GREAT game. No this is not the case yet, many have left with a bad taste due to continual problems, bugs, crashes, and the generic idiocy of some of CCP's policy. One disgruntled customer is worth 5 - 10 no sales at the retail level. I fear Eve may not last or if it does then in an empty universe inhabited by a few Megacorps. Sad but a possibility... well if CCP advertised the game and sorted out these bugs - CDT's - might be worth staying - but so far we are paying for wht - CDT's - servers crashing for hours - getting stuck with no help - pentions never anwsered - poor responce - list goes on ..
The problem is tht i find the game adictive and am going to wait it out see wht happens.
But trying to get a TV add going - reducing the game price and spending some time actual improving the game would help a bunch and boost player confindence in CCP. *LOL*
worth a try tho

Edited by: Erty on 30/08/2003 21:46:21 Here in sweden it's VERY popular. We had to visit 6 stores just to find a single copy for a friend a couple of weeks ago, everywhere they said "it's sold out".
In the store we found EVE there was only two copies left :)
And around a month after release EVE was the 4th best selling game in Sweden according to a toplist in a magazine. It was also GAME's 7th best selling game. I checked a GAME store only a couple of days after they started to sell the game, and they had around 20 copies. Only a few days after I had to go back - and there was not a single copy left.
When EVE was released I was in London - and offcourse I bought it. I didn't want to wait for the swedish release =) So I bought it the same day it was released (they had like 100 copies in the store), and the day after I went back to buy another copy for a friend in Sweden. NOT A SINGLE COPY LEFT. We had to go to another store to get one. This was one of the biggest stores, so many people who bought the game bought it there. But anyway, you get the point.
In Sweden it costs $40 and up, normal price is around $50. No need for lower prices :)
It's quite funny. In the beginning (before release) only one store had the game for pre-order. Then Sweden's two biggest computer magazines (PC Gamer and Super Play) gave it 87% and 9/10. Soon GAME had it. Then another store. Then another. Soon everyone had it, and it's really selling well :)
So it's not the same everywhere.
But I think that in many places the game isn't selling very well anymore. The possible playerbase is quite small - without ads usual gamers won't ever notice the game's existance. So the only people playing are people from beta, or people that has read a review/had the game recommended from a friend/someone on a forum etc... And they (we) bought the game directly when it came out, they didn't wait. Now there's not many people left that knows about the game and doesn't play it. And there's no reviews anymore.
Sorry for the incredible bad english, I've had a LAN with some friends (= no sleep) and I'm ill at the same time...it's not very easy right know.

Mhh Well when I start to play Eve there was always 5000+ Players online. Right now after 2 Months there are just 4000+ left. And if the **** goes on I think there will be another 1000 within the next week (when the first free month is over).
So lets see, if just 4000 or maybe 5000 Players will keep their Online fee what is getting CCP out of it? The sold copys maybe was to less to payback money ccp got from their investors. And having 50.000$ for a whole Company, leased Lines and traffic left is really nothing per month.
How to do adverts if you dont have money to do that..? Well, the problem i already told to CCP is, they dont do very much "Online" Adverts which are quite cheaper than in magazines. And you are not able to buy keys online. If you ask me, EvE just can be stay for longer time if the game and maybe the first week are free of charge!
For example DiabloII, one of the most sold games ever. The Online gaming is free of charge and its community is very big. There are about 200.000 online players worldwide without charging any cent.
I think CCP thought to have about 50.000 online players and not 5000. But I dont want to imagine what happens if Eve got 10x Users as of now...then its unplayable x10...

The ever bouncing bubbly Erty. The Erty that never has lag or CTD's. The Erty that never has experienced anything bad in the world of EvE and if she has, she would see a rainbow around the corner anyway. Ever diligent in countering every single negative issue post.
"you have lag?"... I have none. "you CTD?"... I never CTD. "The stores near you havn't sold much and are trying to dump what they have?"... Everywhere I look their sold out.
If you ever type anything negative in this forum I think my heart would stop due to the immense shock.

Edited by: Erty on 30/08/2003 22:28:06 Yes, you're right. I'm a fanboy and you're a whineboy, same **** :)
I'm underreacting, you're overreacting.
And I can't see why there's something wrong with that I can play for hours without crashing, and that I don't experience any lag? I think it's quite nice :P
Offcourse I get lag when everyone else get lag (the last couple of weeks have been horrible), and offcourse I get node drops when everyone else are. I have never said that I don't, only that I normally don't get any lag and never (read: less than once a week) CTD.
What has this to do with the fact that everywhere I have looked EVE is selling well? It's just simple facts. Offcourse I know that EVE is selling bad in some places (USA), I'm just trying to get things in a perspective. There's always two sides.

As usual you Swedes put yourselves down. Your English is a lot better than some native English speakers. Heh - it's funny really as every Swede/Dane I meet online apologises for their English and it's usually absolutely perfect

M ost all of the kiddies in the USA will be back in school after this weekend, so playing in the mornings should be great for me :) Being in a system with more than 50 other people is a lag fest and it gets even worse when you mine an asteroid belt where some Thorax driver has umpteen dozen drones buzzing about.
It doesn't really matter how well the client is selling anywhere in the world if they don't fix the current issues with the game and start adding something a little more exciting than mining rocks and getting plastered by Mega Pirate Corp Greifers. Some Uber modules spring to mind. As well as maybe some GM events that will get more than one lucky SOB something worth bragging about. The rare minerals needed for ship building should be put back in some of the safer areas. AS is it only caters to the Mega corps with the manpower and firepower to defend a mining op, nevermind the Aliance claimed regions like Stain. Which I think is a royal load of the Queens Road apples.Put in the station construction stuff to give those Alliance jokers something else to do besides runnining everyone out of their so called region. I paid and pay the same amount of green to play this game and I should be free to go where I will and do as I please without some conglomerate of *******s telling me otherwise. I frequent a bulletin board that is read by a freat many people who have the same passion for space genre games as myself and I told them all to steer clear of this one, because the Beta was actually an Alpha test and now we are all paying for the beta test, and that personally ****es me off.
