Heres one for you all from Iceland...and those whom are not...
Almost one-third of the world's Lava output since the year 1500 has occurred in Iceland.
Iceland is a 39,000 square island made of lava from volcanoes. The eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano in november 2004 blasted gas emmissions so high that airlines were forced to divert their flights.
This fact is brought to you by : Fact or Crap desk Calendar for January 16th 2006

here are some...
1. Half the population of Iceland was killed in 1402 due to the bubonic plague.
2. IN the 1960's/70's there was a "dispute" between Iceland and the UK over fishing grounds, this is known as "The Cod Wars"

A third of Europe was killed, so half isn't that much more.
Anyway, the funny thing I saw on the CCP website was that 70% of the population believes in the existence of elves, and they have to reroute roadways and construction projects to avoid disturbing places where elves live. -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

LOL, being an old git I remember that, it was sometime during the mid 70's.
What was funny though is that most Brits wanted Iceland to win (which they did).

That was no political dispute. There was actual violence, in the form of fishing trawlers ramming each others hulls.

beer and taxis are really really really really expensive.
Never take a taxi from the airport to the city, you might not have any money left for beer.

Actually it was the Navy's that got involved in this, and there were literally, "shots across the bows".
The cause was the EU fishing "free for all" (it was called the Common Market in those days) and as Iceland wasn't a member they were considered "fair game".
They weren't supposed to fight back, but they did and good luck to them

Edited by: Arcsine on 11/02/2006 02:28:19 You know I was -->| |<--- this close to going to Iceland for the EVE fest. But I was concerned that hamburgers and pizza would cost too much. So, how much does a hamburger, and a nice pepperoni pizza cost in Iceland?

I saw a vid on one of the (USA) educational channels.
A volcanic eruption with lava flow was threatening one of the major towns in Iceland.
They did not sit still for it or run away, they found a better answer.
They started pumping in the ice-cold sea-water and spraying it on the lava.
It worked.
I don't know what it is in the local language, but it was translated as "Peeing on the Lava."
I, for one, welcome our new Jovian Overlords! |

Sorry, it was 80%, not 70%: Originally by: http://www.ccpgames.com/jobs/move_to_iceland.asp Surveys show that despite their obsession with modern technology, as many as 80% of Icelanders believe in the existence of elves. Even today, roads have been re-routed and building plans redesigned or abandoned to avoid disturbing rocks where elves are said to live.

Iceland unilaterally extended its territorial fishing limit from 3 to 200 nautical miles in 1972, precipitating a dispute with the UK known as the ôcod wars,ö which ended in 1976 when the UK recognized the new limits.

It's much considering only 50.000 or less lived in Iceland in 1402 so you can guess how devastating it was for a small country to lose half of it's population. The Danish king thought many times about moving the entire population out of Iceland to Denmark.
Icelandic population never went much over 60.000-70.000, mostly because of volcanic eruptions and plages, until around mid or late 1800. A huge ***** opened up and a giant volcanic eruption from 'Lakagfgar' covered the entire country in ash and the heat in the northern hemisphere dropped about 1¦C.
These are just few examples of many disasters and how we managed to hold on and live here in Iceland. Blast I can't even type c r a c k without it getting filtered.

A recent building project in Perth, Scotland was modified to avoid moving a large rock believed to be used as a home for... oh, some kind of fairy or other.
Not quite as major as redirecting a road, but don't knock folk tales. For the record, Perth is mostly populated by people who commute to the capital on a daily basis.

I dont recall food and drinks being that expensive tbh, then again I changed it into euro's but to me it all seemed pretty much the same to what I normally pay.
I had 4 slices of toast with jam and cheese with salad and 3 cups of tea for 1000 isk which is 13 euro. I had fabulous thai fish dish for 800 isk at some thai place which tastes really good too

think i remember that there was a major volcanic eruption on icleand the day Exodus was released (it was mentioned in a CCP press release i think) ____________ The cargo bay is overloaded and cannot be made to fit Expanded Cargohold I. It is currently only capable of fitting 8772.12 units and it is currently jammed full with 9558.33 units. |
