I'll put in my two cents here. I really think this could be implemented seamlessly with a 'garage' style interface very similar to what GTA: San Andreas did. There were a set number of different paint jobs for each car, certain accessories for each car, each cost a little bit of money, done. Same idea could be put into Eve. I personally want to be able to have a personalized ship, and even more, would love to put my corp logo or a name on it. All the other posters make great points about how practically every other MMO has this feature, so what's CCP's excuse?
Lag wouldn't be a problem due to several reasons. Firstly, all the mods for each ship are stored locally. Second, each customized ship you run across could be cached locally, only a few bytes of data has to be sent (a small config file referencing the locally stored mod files). Even with infinite variations of mods could easily be viewed without adding much lag.
As I see it, there's no good reason this shouldn't be done.

good idea lot off the racing car games have a paint shop with 2 d skins off cars ,then you paint tem like nascar, only trouble with doing it in eve is lag paint jobs to complex to render quickly not to mention the database storage required,as well as user hard drive space required 4 the skins off every ship they come across ,srry but i can in one day literly come acrss a couple hundred if not a thousand dif people in my travells in eve the hard drive space requier on my hard drive would be immense not to mention patch updates and bugs thre game graphically is already ahead off the field with a graphic update on its way in the near future
srry m8 but lag is a problem already in eve without a paint shop maybe in 5 or 10 years when the internet catches up and base systems are 100 times faster and harddrives are on crytals with people talking in tera`s as we talk in gig now,and i wouldnt laugh at that either mate in 1991 i asked for 8 megs off ram in pc and the bloke building refused at first, said i would never use it yet today with vista 8 gig is possible with 16 in the not 2 distant future ,nice idea m8 but as i said bit early 4 eve

We all know how the NPC factions have thier colour schemes right? Well right now we are using our races color schemes. Why doesnt CCP just give us a choice as to what faction color scheme we put on our ship? Example: All the Bhaalgorn really is is a armageddon in blood raider colors with a diff slot layout right? Well I propose that CCP let us change the gold on the front to blood raider red etc. It could be as simple as having faction paint. So what if my punisher is in blood raider colors? We got tons of blood raider rats in punishers in blood raider colors. Some more wont make much of a differance will it? It's simply making us look like a rat.

As a few people asked: Who bothers to actually zoom in to look at the ship?
I'm too busy trying to blow it up.
What I do think would work is custom icons in the "Selected Object" window. Make the icons twice the size of the current ones and allow them to be custom.

The point isnt to look at enemy ships while you blow them up. The point is to make your ship look cool. Who gives a flying **** what other people think of your ships looks? Another purpose is target calling. eg. "The gold thorax is primary!" If you are going to be admiring your enemys paint while you blow him up then you need to find something else to do. And the wierd split bonuses and superior stats to T1 ships don't mean anything at all. . . Never mind that half the faction ships have their own models, Sansha ships anyone? -------------------------------------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. I dont think people should have total control of the color of their ships. Honestly, when you give people that kind of control, the whole game looks like bad. People have no taste and CCP goes to great lengths to make the game look awesome. THere is a better option. If you look at the textures on all the ships, they all have "trim". Parts of the ship are different colors, like the red stripes on caldari ships and the sections on the amarr ships that are a different shade of gold. Your corporation should choose a corporate color and make a corporate ship logo. (a simplification of the corp logo,or perhaps just use the corp logo itself). All the ship logos and colors would be cached locally and the user would have the option to even turn it off if it slowed their machine down too much. Your ship would show up with your corps trim and logo. It would make it so that all the ships were not identical, but not have hot pink battleships flying around, which would really look stupid. Haulers of course might have a little more prominant trim, colors and logos than other ships. While I cant see a line green battleship with a "Tasty Cakes Baking Co." logo on it,I can certainly see a hauler that was 80% lime green with the logo, escorted by a raven and two caracles with lime green trim instead of the normal caldari red.

I agree that some people have bad tastes but does that mean everyone shouldnt be allowed to paint their ships? Sure some people would have "Hot pink battleships" but how about only having your ships paint show up? Or maybe CCP could limit the amount of color you could put on or limit the colors you could put on which goes back to my previous post about having rat color variants. Guristas paint on Kessies and Merlins? Blood raider red on Amarr ships? You know you want it... Custom Ship Paint Jobs! |
