I love playing Eve and up til this freezing of my desktop/comp I was playing Eve almost every day. I'm going on 2 weeks now with this freeze/hang on startup when it attempts to connect to Eve. Any longer and I'm going to request for a free month's worth of playtime or I'll close my account! >:(
Why should I pay if I can't play?

How about waiting for a patch?
If you don't have the patience to wait a reasonable amount of time for problems to be fixed, I suggest you do not play online games as they will always be buggy and unstable.

It's allready been 2 weeks and it could be at least another 2 weeks before the next patch comes out and you're saying I should wait til the next patch???
Any length of time past 2 weeks is a waste of my money. I went the every 6 month route.
My system specs are:
SUPER 370SSA /w P3 1 Ghz cpu 256 MB Ram Radeon 9700 Pro Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Windows 98 se DirectX 9b Have all the latest drivers
I've tried:
Reinstalling Eve Clearing the cache Removing the Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (822925) Deleting the pref.ini file Setting audio=0 in pref.ini
Nothing has worked yet. Either my my desktop freezez or my computer locks up.
This is really rediculous.

it's starting to sound like it's your machine...did this freezing start happening right after last patch and u haven't been able to play since?
One thing u can try the next patch should be out no later then wed. or thursday use your patched up eve client and make a new folder called Evetest and copy the eve folder into there then go to http://patch.eve-online.com/test-patches.html
and patch up the new directory up to the newest version on that page and try and get into the Chaos server/test server...
if this let's u in least u know you'll be fixed by the middle of the week if it does not either email support about it good luck there or the quick and easy way just reinstall windows and be done with it so u know that's not it cause the game should not freeze your desktop to where u can't close the app i would blame that on windows before the game.

I reformatted my hard drive and installed this OS 2 weeks ago.
I know it's not my machine cuz there are others with the same problem as me. I've been posting in Froggy's sticky thread. Before I reformatted I had been playing Eve since it went Gold.
I used the CD to 1165 patch and was having this problem. I removed and reinstalled Eve using the CD to 1166 patch and I'm still unable to get past the splash screen.
I have run the log server and since the game freezes everything and I have to reboot I can't save the log file. When I had the logserver up the last message it showed was the splash screen being loaded. The splash screen does it's thing where it creates 2 windows and closes one then freezes just as it's trying to connect to the server. I know it's trying connect cuz my firewall prompts me saying so but I can't configure it cuz the game freezes everything. The login screen music/sound plays until I hit <ctrl><alt><del> once then it stops.
The only thing I can do is <ctrl><alt><del> twice and when that doesn't work use the reset button.
I'm sure it's not my comp since others are having the same problem.

Quote: We have received reports from users about not being able to get to the eula screen after installing a certain windows update. We're not sure what is causing it and what update exactly but doing system restore should fix it in most cases. We know it is a recent update though.

I have a similar problem where the system freezes at the point of loading my characters into the selection page.
The news display doesn't load at this point either.
After a period of time my internet connection will be disconnected without my consent.
Once the character faces have loaded and I select my character the screen goes black and a loading bar appears. Again, regularly my connection is dropped without my consent.
It must be EVE as I have no connectivity problems with my internet on any other occasions.
I have to support the view that if I can't geton to play, why should I pay?
As a word of encouragement though, I've found that EVEDUE PLUS from Eve-i.com has been a sanity saver as after clearing my cache and login I sometimes have a higher rate of sucess.
Interestingly I have the highest level of difficulty logging in when I have new mail or something dramatic has happened to my character - a colleague gave me a ship and it took me an hour to log on.
There may be no connection at all but it might be worth getting the app to see if it helps you.

Well I reinstalled DirectX 9b then Eve just loaded the splash screen and stopped responding altogether but it didn't freeze my desktop/comp this time and I was able to end the program through program manager.
I removed/reinstalled Eve again and got the desktop/comp freeze again. I reinstalled DirectX 9b again and I get the splash screen and Eve stops responding. Again It didn't freeze/hang anything this time after reinstalling DirectX.
It appears that Eve is having some conflict with DirectX. Is it the DirectX 9b drivers or is it Eve?

i am having exactly the problem you just described Rymar. Splash screen, then hanging before the EULA loads. I only experienced this after installing the new detonator 45.23 drivers and my fx5600 ultra

Rymar - I'm having the exact same problems.
But with me, I know its my system. For some reason, it started with directx 8. It isn't Eve - it even freezes in MS Word.
All you can do is reset the system - and carry on. Until microsoft sort it out, it will keep affecting your play.
So far its cost me a cruiser - but has nothing to do with the game apart from I need directx or later to play the game.
When I go back to directx 7 or before, no problems at all.
Oh, and for the record - P3 500 128 meg ram soundblaster live soundcard GeForce 2 64mb graphics card.

When I was playing Eve before I had DirectX 9a and XP and now I'm using 98 se and DirectX 9b. However a gm already said they know the problem has to do with the last patch so that confirms it's not my comp.
I've also tried the audio=0, music=stop, and noDisclaimer=1 and they didn't work for me.
I've tried about everything I could think of and what others have suggested as well and nothing has worked so far.

I may be going out on a limb here but here's a suggestion.
How many of you use a linksys router? If you do have one there may be a problem related to Directx9 and the plug n play feature that the router has. You may wish to disable the plug n play feature from the linksys router and see if it helps.
I used to play multiplayer games without a problem using DX8. One day I upgraded to DX9 and ran inro all sorts of lockups and problem in certain games (Mechwarrior 4 series of game). I searched and found in some forums that there seems to have been a bug between DX9's useage of plugnplay and the linksys routers. After disabling that feature all was well again.
 I hope this helps.
