Please could I have your help?
Recently I asked for help on a shield setup - thanks to all who offered their advice, since then I have found out that the only problem is that my Hulk, whilst being a fantastic mining machine, drains cap so fast that even a small shield booster empties it in about a minute
And although combinations of extenders, hardners & the like confuse the hell out of me , I would like some advice on a passive shield setup...
Shield capacity = 1350 Shield recharge time = 500 sec
And I have 4 medium slots to play with as miners will be in the Hi's & mining upgrades will be in the Lo's. Thanks for any help offered as its all starting to make my head hurt.

Well very simply as many shield extenders as you can fit (and the largest ones you can fit)
Obviously you'd only be considering passive hardeners as opposed to active hardeners but you'd have to consider the trade off between the higher resists with the larger base shield
In the low slots you can put shield power relays to increase your shield recharge (which is generally why no one puts dedicated shield rechargers in the mid slots) but if youve got cap problems you might have to re-think this and look at putting rechargers in the mids (which might allow you to put stuff in the lows to help fit more/bigger extenders in the mids)

As I said, I only have 4 medium slots to play with...
so my passive shield options are: Shield extenders (Increase the max shield strength) Shield rechargers (recharges the shield as it says) Shield resistence amplifiers (hardner for a passive shield)
Any tips on how I should work the setup?

Don't forget Shield Power Relays.

Aren't power relays lo slot items?
Anyway, the ship has the following built in resistences:
EM 25% Explosive 70% Kinetic 55% Thermal 40%
and at the moment im facing Sansha belt rats, so should I go for:
1x Sheld extender 1x Shield recharger 1x Thermal Shield resistence amplifier 1x EM Shield resistence amplifier
?

I guess you need all your low slots then.

Umm... ta... I read the first 6 pages of this thread & my eyes started to bleed...
According to their formula, my ship looks like this: 1350/500=2.7*2.4=6.48 points per second when less than 20%
xxx=2.7 yyyy=6.48
Which was fine when just thinking about extenders & rechargers, but didn't help me thinking about Resistence Amps unless it came later in the tread. Really I just want a pointer, or an opinion from an experienced passive tanker on what I should do with just 4 medium slots...
1x shield extender 1x Therm Amp 1x EM Amp 1x? ... recharger, extender or Amp?
or should I just it Amp's... im asking as I want an experienced helpfull opinion.

Passive? 3 named shield extenders and a tech 2 shield recharger.
Or, 2 extenders, a booster and a tech 2 cap recharger for a passive / active combo.
I'm admittedly new, but a cap recharger can't hurt.

Cap isn't all that necessary for a passive shieldtank.
And the peak Recharge time for the shield is 32%. Keep it above that and you're fine.

Thanks for the opinions, much appreciated.... how do I know what my peak Recharge time for the shield is?

If your shield get down to say, 29%, then yes, leg it. If they can't get it down that far though, then sit there and enjoy your mining :) ----------

Edited by: FraXy on 14/02/2006 14:42:53 On a Cruiser sized ship in mids it is better to fit a Large Extender II since it will give alot more boost to HP/sec regen then a 10% shield recharger.
(Shield HP/Shield Recharge) x2.5 = Peak Regen at ~30% shield
However i notice the PG is very low on that thing so i`d rather advice to harden the shield up and fit a Medium Shield Booster II.
Medium Shield Booster II, 2x Invulnerability I/II, 1x (Cap Recharger, Shield Boost Amplifier, Passive Shield Hardener [EM/Thermal]) and 2x PDU I/II (or WCS)
Edit: It got a 37.5% shield resist bonus so EM would be 53%, Thermal 62.5%, Kinetic 72% and Explosive 81%.
That would be base resists and with 2x Invulnerability Fields it would be some sweet resists on that thing.
This is my lazy attempt to make an uber-signature, please go away!

That would all be well and good, but he's not flying a cruiser, he's flying a hulk. Plus he said that even a small shield booster drains his cap when he's got the miners on so I really doubt the 2 x Invuln Fields are an option.

Ok two fast Questions! How much PG and CPU you got after all High and Lows are fitted? Can you use T2 shield amplifiers and extenders? ---------------------------------------- Ancient Japanese saying: The one who owns the minigun, fears not! |

Power control units, then - boost your shield HP, shield recharge, CAP recharge and available powergrid.

Well, a Hulk got too low grid that it`s not worth trying to fit a passivetank. with 6 grid it would be damn well impossible to get smth worth while.
I`d take the small t2 booster that empties in 1 minute over passivetanking the Hulk.

With so little powergrid and cpu, you won't be able to fit a very good passive tank. If you can afford it, I'd reccommend getting a small gistii shield booster (the one that gives 57 shield for 13 energy every 2 seconds) and fitting cap rechargers in the remaining med slots.
To calculate your max passive shield regen take (total shield HP)/(shield recharge time) then multiply that by 2.5 Max shield regen rate is reached when your shields are down to about 1/3. |
