I had a really confusing encounter yesterday to do with an ore thief.
I was Ice mining in my covetor and a indy ore theif pulls up to my can. I locked him before he even got to my can but he kept coming. Inevitably he grabbed some ice and started to run. I scrambled him, launched my drones and poped his hauler. Not a word was exchanged throughout the engagement. No big deal.
I'm pretty much a soloer and I figured that he'd be back now that he had me flagged and likely with friends, so I insta'd back to the station, grabbed my hauler and ran to my can to empty it before I parked my character. The first trip was no problem. I got a full load all but 2 chunks of ICE which was left in the can. I insta'd back to my base dropped off the load and returned to the belt.
When I got back there was a red can in the place of the can I had left (keep in mind that I'd only been gone about 20 seconds) but nobody in the belt was red to me. On top of that there was an Iteron mk5 about 200m from the red can that had replaced my can. The Iteron pilot grabbed the contents of the can and took off with it, all without flagging.
I convo'd the Iteron pilot to ask if he'd been working with the pilot of the hoarder that I'd poped. He asked if that was supposed to scare him (??). I said no, that I was curious as to what had happened while I was gone. He said thx for teh Ic3! L0L!!!
So my question is WTH happened? Something would have had to insta to my can, transfer the contents to another can and then get out of the belt or cloak inside of 20 seconds. Then when the Iteron pilot picked up the tiny bit of ICE he would have flagged to whoever had done the deed. If that's the case why didn't the person who set the trap do anything? Also it seemed like a ton of action for a .9 system that had been quiet for the last 3 or 4 hours. Maybe a bit too much of a coincidence.

Hopefully to curb a few flames, I know mining into a can with no hauler around isn't the smartest thing to do. I expect thieves to take a bite out of my profits as it stands. I'm currently in the process of training up an alt on a new account to do the hauling.

Ooh, that makes me think of a very very neat trick:
1- A guy in a shuttle flies up to a can. Makes his own jetcan, and commences a transfer, pops the original can, then flies out.
2- A different guy in a dif corp / gang flies in with hauler and grabs the loot from that can.
3- The shuttle pilot returns with his fighting ship, should the original owner try to take back the ore.

Edited by: Basalt on 13/02/2006 23:40:06 The thing is that I was nowhere near the warp in point. They would have had to have created a bookmark, shared it out amongst themselves etc, and even then I don't think they'd have been fast enough.
They did the can transfer incredibly quickly and it looked like the Iteron was coming from 15km with an MWD.
It all seems like a whole lot of planning for 2 pieces of ice (less than 200k isk worth). Either that or it was one hell of a huge coincidence.

Sure, but then why didn't they attack the Iteron? I have trouble believeing that these guys just sit around waiting for somebody to leave with a haulerload of ICE and then poach whatever's left. Seems like a lot of patience and effort for that kind of payoff.

do yourself a favor make sure you have defense aswell on that hauler alt.... someone comes by get your hauler back the station.. switch to a cruiser/bs comeback while your mining ship has the attention of the target and blast'm only way your going to mine in complete peace imo ---------------------------------- Drayco {TSMP}

Because he was working with the actual thief. As was explained before character x - the thief, takes the ore from your can and dumps it in a new one he makes, character y - the hauler (different corp) can then empty the can safe from attack by you (however since the thief is flagged to you already you can just take the ore back)
Additionally character y - the hauler, can create his own jet can and put your ore in it, then if you try and take the ore back the hauler can attack you because now you are the thief (even though it was your ore to begin with)
From the times given it does sound like there was a cloaked ship involed (probably waiting for your to steal it back)
