The part about the scanner needs some work. I'm not sure I would've understood it myself.
Here's a suggestion to a better guide:
1. Open the overview settings, and configure the filters tab. Make sure 'asteroid belt' is ticked. You will also want to make sure pirate npcs are showing up. Otherwise, you want to have the overview as clean as possible, showing only essential stuff. This is important in order to use the scanner effectively.
2. Now open your scanner. Make sure the 'use overview settings' box is ticked. Make sure the range is set to maximum (this is about 14 AU). Warp to a planet with lots of belts, and hit scan. Note that 360 degree scans can take a long time.
3. Search through the list for any player ships. Ignore the rookie ships and shuttles, and note that some of the others may also be at safespots (frigates and industrials in particular). If you're picking up anything interesting, proceed to scan the belts for them. Click on your ship; a white box should appear over it. Now align the camera so that the box overlaps one of the nearby asteroid belt icons. Make a five degree scan. If you've done it correctly, you should now see the stuff in the belt. If it's empty, you should at least get the belt's name in your scanner; if you're not getting that, your scan wasn't accurate or your overview settings aren't configured the way they should. Proceed to scan the belts around you until you find what you were looking for. Then warp in, and proceed with the attack.
4. If the ship is gone when you arrive, don't be disheartened. Either it is located at a safespot between the planet and the belt, it cloaked, or it warped off. Try heading back to the planet to locate it again.
Tips:
-If you're hunting cruisers or smaller ships, they can often warp out before you even get to the belt. Sometimes when you locate a cruiser in an empty belt, it could be wiser to hold off your attack until it's located in a belt you think they will stay at, a belt filled with npcs for instance.
-Track a ship's movement. Some players warp between the belts from top to bottom. If you find that a player is doing this, you can warp to the next belt in his path and ambush him (this gives you more time to get close enough to scramble before he can run). -----

This is by far a better guide to scanning, and the system I use too. It should be noted that the direction your ship is facing doesn't matter in the least when scanning (I only mention this because lots of people seem to think it does), only the direction of the camera.
Also, if you have lots of objects behind a belt and want make sure you're only picking things up from the belt, keep in mind that 150,000,000km = 1 AU. So if a belt is 1.2 AU away, multiply 150,000,000 by 1.2 then input that number as your scan range.
You can scan very very quickly this way, and in my opinion using the scanner properly is the most important thing for a pirate to learn (since killing a target isn't all that difficult, as hopefully they won't be setup for PvP - finding the target, now that is hard...). ___

"Just wanted to point out that with the recent changes, alt boosting for sniping is completely, unbelievably, disgustingly useless. "
Unless you're sitting in ship that can pack 4x sensor booster, 4x tracking comp, 4x damage mods (and optional number of WCS i'd figure) using external boosting allows you to basically get extra slots your own ship is short of. Which is far from disgustingly useless...

A little tip for starting pirates reading this:
KNOW YOUR DAMAGE TYPES
It helps to know what damage types your NPC'ing victims will be hardened for and which type they will be most likely to dish out. Note that, these are never absolutes. Not every weapon system can change damage types, and people can always fit more types of resistance hardeners than you expect.
Point in case:
I have taken down a Ferox with my Wolf in Bleak Lands who was tanked against EM/Thermal and using Thunderbolts. If that very same Ferox was in Lonetrek he would have been hardened against Kenetic/Thermal and would have dealt Kenetic damage, which is a lot harder to deal with on an armor tank compared to EM.
So here is what to expect:
In Gurista space people are hardened against Thermal/Kenetic and are most likely to use Kenetic damage.
In Serpentis space people are hardened against Thermal/Kenetic and are most likely to use Thermal damage.
In Blood Raider space people are hardened against Thermal/EM and are most likely to use EM damage.
In Sansha space people are hardened against Thermal/EM and are most likely to use Thermal damage.
In Angel space people are hardened against all damage types (!) and are most likely to use Explosive damage.
So fit your ship accordingly and your success rate should improve drastically.

I've got a better idea: you should expand your post into a scanner guide. I found it very helpful and would like to know more about how they work, how probes work, etc.
The AU conversion is nice too... your post made it into my notepad ingame.

The guide is very helpful... But i think the best advise for anyone who wants to start piracy is to get out there!
Learning for urself(usually the hard way ) is the best and natural way to do things.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great info thanks alot. It does help alot to get some of the basics going. Not looking forward to loosing alot of ships though lol..but thats the name of the pirate game But courage which goes against military expediency is stupidity, or, if it is insisted upon by a commander, irresponsibility |

Quote: Therefore it is alost essential for all new characters to train for a microwarp drive
Now that the missile changes have come to pass, an afterburner is probably more viable, though having the skills for a microwarp drive is a very good idea
This will help you to take reduced damage from missiles and evade turret fire.
I just started eve and can't wait to start learning how to pirate. However, I am confused as to whether I should take the time to learn the skills to use a MWD or if an Afterburner would be a better use of my skill learning time. I'll be using a Kestrel with rockets for the weapon slots and Warp Stabalizer and Stasis Webafier for mid slots, and Capacitor Power Relay for both low slots.

I have a question about the security status. I have now -3.9. The customs/navy or whatever at the 0.8, 0.9, 1.0 systems lock me, but dont shoot at me. Does the shooting start when I getmy sec status below -5.0? So can I still go to Jita, Rens etc to buy new ships and modules without getting killed by the npc navy ships or sentry guns?

A point to note with planet scanning is that you're best off setting up a safe spot a few hundred kilometers off the planet. Lot's of pirates know about planet scanning and the danger is that if you don't set up a safe spot you'll warp in on top of someone bigger and nastier than you are.

PIRATEN II
NOW RECRUITING pilots of all types noobs miners pvpers capital pilots more ships more reserves more power and an Alliance like none other is soon on the way an Alliance that will shatter all benchmarks today. The plan is yet a fertile seed it will take a year or so to realise but I will get there' and i know u will get there with me
PIRATEN II isnt just a pirate corp but also a college in the dark arts a wealth of knowledge and support for its members. PLAYER OWNED STATIONS ready for launch, with all the plans to make monthly dividends for its members a mining outpost ready for launch also and Capital built ships from PIRATEN II also.
I have been in many corps I have been here since the start of EVE and have done and seen MUCH. the most important traits for me in a corp are good members TRUSTWORTHY who will defend u to the hill wrong or right and hand out the Rollecking after. Members should not fear being kicked from the corp for not being in an op. Tax should be spent wisely and translucently all memebrs have audit VEIW enabled. Not feathering the nests of the CEO CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER or Directors as is usually the case. a CEO who is active along with his directors is 100% crucial in my corp regular meetings plans aims goals Targets and objectives on a weekly basis is the order of the day in PIRATEN II. THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN BEING IN A STIMULI FREE environment it numbs the mind LOOK at the majority of the alliances ine eve to see it for ur self. Focusless/ stagnation and Alliance implosion is usually the latter stage is. MY CORP IS A CORP WITH AIMS JUST BECUASE IT HAS A Skull and bones doesnt mean missoning mining trading plexing are banned , quite the reverse really it better a corp have all this and much more on the drawing board is my philosphy. A CORP that communicates TEAMSPEAK server ready. "A team that communicates is a team that succeeds".
Help, THIS IS the most important aspect of a well run organisation to be able to give knowledge or support to grow ones members, "with knowlege comes POWER". with help comes trust. D ROYAL welcomes all
