You need less thrusters on the ship if you design it in a way that it will fly mostly in a plane.
Also, the ship interior has artificial gravity and crew (together with inertia dampeners to keep crew alive), so the ships kinda need something to be considered "up". |

Btw, EVE ships have top speed limits because of the functionality of the inertia dampeners.. If there were no limits on top speeds the crew would die in every turn, and your ship would take damage on any contact. And I made all this up.
"up" is relative to what you're standing on in your ship - presumably the "floor" [or ceiling]. but since toroidal fields are omnidirectional ... it all comes back to which way your ship is oriented and stuff.. or something. |

Lore-wise, warp drives are physics breaking. They cause a natural resistance to movement; they like to stay in place. Once turned on, they can never be turned off without the ship exploding.
The way they anchor themselves in space is what causes resistance, and keeps you from going infinitely fast. It's apparently also what keeps you from falling into planets without orbiting at ludicrous speeds.
I like to assume that up is the same for all ships because they're all manufactured with their warp drives facing the same direction. Not a forum alt.-á |

Nighthawk vertical? I thought they were turning it into a Drake hull? Or are they changing that completely now?
And in reply to the OP, coding. You try having a spaceship game as large as Eve with no coded "up". It would be hard to do... Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person." |

And by "some people" I am mainly referring to everyone D400 blows up. The old MMO Jumpgate was like that. Joysticking around in 0-grav was actually really fun. You'd rotate your ship and it would just keep going ahead sideways, on the same vector. You had to apply thrusters to change course, and turn around backwards and apply thrusters to brake. If you hung around a station very long, you'd see somebody crash into it and asplode in a failed docking attempt. Too bad that game died, and the sequel ended as vaporware too. |

I always liked Allegiance. You had side thrusters and rotation thrusters and you would need to rotate your ship prior to engagement to make sure you were going to turn the correct way, because some race's ships could go up and down quick and others could turn right or left quickly. Of course, that was all first person. A lot like what most people want EVE to be, except contained into hour-long games instead of persistent. |

Well we seem to be oriented around the plane of the ecliptic, defined by the way planets tend to orbit their star.
Would still leave two possible "ups" but if whoever manages the gates chooses that when you warp in, you get a standardizing influence.
Does seem a bit immersion breaking, as it doesn't seem logical that spacefarers would spend that much effort organizing a common up, but hey we are flying submarines anyway. Hardly the worst thing.
