I just got a Cyclone BC. And I'm a fairly new person that doesn't have any training in the shield hardening bonus skills (yet). Now without anything running, my shields have:
1.86% EM, 60.4% Exp, 40.6% Kin, 20.8% Therm
I looted one of those shield immunity hardeners, and I was mentally expecting that it would add +25% to all. But I'm only showing:
25.6% EM, 70% Exp, 55% Kin, 40% Therm
...EM looks right, but I don't know what's going on in the other stats.

When it says "50%", it means 50% of the difference between your current shield resistance and 100% resistance. If you're good at maths, you should recognise that it's giving you 50% resistance since you'll take 50% of the damage with your hardener on compared to with it off. Your hardener says 25% to all resistances. EM looks right because your EM resistance is approximately 0, so when it adds 25%, it adds 25% of 100-0 (which is just 100).
If you're not fond of maths, there's a spreadsheet at the website linked in my sig that will calculate it all for you.

Ahhhh gotcha. ...that was totally non-intuitive though. First time I've ever seen a bonus percentage applied to the potential as opposed to an already existing value.

Yeah, it does seem a bit baffling but when you get your head around it you realise that the 25% resistance thing IS actually adding 25% to your resistances. It's increasing your resistances enough to make the damage dealt to you be reduced by 25%.
