Greetings... I'm on my 13th day in EVE and really having fun. I've lost a few ships to pirates tho (no complaints I try and learn from my mistakes) and would like to be better prepared for them when possible.
Last night I was rat hunting in 0.4 in a Catalyst. I was watching the local closely but on first read didn't see the "-" next to a pilot's security rating (doh!).
At some point she (?) warped in behind me in a Tristan. I started to warp away and she wrapped me up with a bright orange field. Then as I pounded her multiple cycles from close range with 8 rail guns (2x150, 6x75), but her armor wouldn't budge, not even perceptably. She podded me with glee.
So the bright orange thing was a "warp scrambler" right? And her armor was "tanked" if I have that right?
How is that done, and what could I have countered with to escape (warp stabilizer)?
Thanks in advance for any advice. -Tryp

The orange field was a nosferatu, which transfers your capacitor energy to their ship. No doubt they had you warp scrambled as well.
Not sure how you lost though if it was indeed a Tristan as your 8 rails should have torn it up, unless it was orbiting you at 500m, 75mm rails should have been able to hit it reasonably well.
They could have been tanked but even so.. anyway tanking (in this case armour) would be to fit an armour plate which increases armour HP, along with an armour repairer to repair any damage you might cause.
I can't really help you with fitting a destroyer well since I've never flown one. --------------------------------------------------

The big orange field and is a Nosferatu, it sucks the cap from yoru ship and gives it back to the attacker.
As you use Hybrid weapons and ammo you do Thermal and Kinetic damage, check the info on the Tristan , you'll see that those resists aren't articularly good for that. Only if she would have fit EXACTLY to counter your damagetype she MIGHT have been able to tank you.
But what probably happened is that due to her orbiting you, your railguns couldn't track and hit her. Railguns have good range but bad tracking, so anything close and moving you can't hit. To counter that your best bet it to fit a Webifier, it'll slow closerange targets down enough for you to hit them.
Under any normal circumstances, you should be able to kill that Tristan, even if you have lower SP.

Chances are she was flying a stealth bomber Nemesis, the T2 variant of the Tristan. That would explain how she was able to completely ignore your railguns and appear right behind you. -- Lil Miner |

is there a counter to the webbifier,
What if you get webified, warp disrupted and cap drained does that more or less make you a sitting duck ? If you didnt have a warp core stabeliser ?

Edited by: Harsh Pixel on 15/02/2006 16:28:23 Ok that makes sense thank you all.
Yeah it was odd.. I had been taking out Chief Serps with ease, then having that little Tristan take me down. I have a Tristan so even after I saw what it was I thought I would at least put down some hurt. Her shields went quickly but once I hit armor it was like I wasn't doing anything, like 6 salvos w/o dmg.
In any case I clearly need to work on my combat skills.

Hmm not really, the Tristan has more shield and armour, while the Nemesis has slightly better resists, so they're probably about equal in terms of survivability. --------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 15/02/2006 16:57:27 Shinoble; If you're scrambled, webbed and NOSed then yeah you're a sitting duck. The only chance you might have comes from killing him before he kills you (doh), ECM, some friends that might help you just in time or a ransom. Otherwise say byebye to your ship.
You can counter the scrambling by using 1 (or preferably 2) Warp Core Stabilisers (WCS), or you can fit a Multispec jammer and hope the odds are in your favor.

Warp Core Stabs in the lows would have enabled you to warp away.
Are you sure it was a Tristan? Coulda been a T2 frigate that looked like a Tristan.

Well, If you're NOS'd (cap drained) you can counter by draining back. You'll lose a highslot tho. Or a Cap Booster could be an option taking a med slot but they usually don't balance out the amount lost, just slow it down.
If your Webbed, an MWD (Micro Warp Drive) can help you out of it but even then you lose cap quickly and will only do about the same speed you would normaly do if you weren't webbed :P
The best thing is the anti-scramble. Warp Core Stabalizer. If they have all that EW (Electronic Warefare)on you and it looks like you can't kill them first, you can at least jump away. I recommend 2 if you think you're gonna get jumped but 2 low slots is brutal.
BTW, being warp jammed looks like little circular blue waves (not very obvious when being hit with a NOS)

From the sound of things your opponent was simply moving too fast for your 75mm rails to hit. The NOS was likely not your biggest problem, but rather your Railgun's tracking ability.
A Stasis Webifyer would probably have made a huge difference. If she had you NOS'ed, then she was likely very close ... 6.5km or less I believe. Your 75mm's would likely have made short work of her had she been webbed.
Oh, whenever you go into low-sec space you should have an out-of-system destination set. Pod's require so little time to enter warp that if you hit Autopilot right when your ship is destroyed it should get away ... Lag-depending. Be sure to warp away from that gate, mind you, as she could follow easily .. but the AP can get you out from under the gun and allow you to hop about to a safe-spot.
