Really, stop these trial accounts. People creating one to just "try" something or alot of in-game advertisers are starting to kill the bandwidth and cause horrible lag in some areas. Aside from the spamming to visit some point-n-click websites so the owner gets money. Maybe setup a small server for people to try, if they like the game mechanics, but the current situation is FUBAR.

Now that is probably the BEST idea I have seen in a long time....Not too many other games are free AND offer a free trial also....I like that idea

Indeed. Maybe we should make "eve player vote list against evil of trial accounts" .. or close to it...

I have to disagree. (somebody always does, no?)
I've just finished my trial and gone subscription. The reason I chose to stay is because of the veterans here that provide such a rich social environment. I've had a lot of help from unexpected places, even pirates!
If I were stuck with just other newbs, I probably would have lost interest.
So segregating the newbs is not a good idea, IMHO.

Noone is segregating new players. you would get same help wheather on trial or not. Its your actions in game that mater, not status/ Trials only make it harder for veterans to help new players- think about it that way..

I also just finished my trial and without the help of my corp I probably wouldn't have stayed. The advice really helped a beginning player like me. Maybe make them shorter like 1 week.

Maybe there can be separate little server for new players, where veteran friends can meet and show them stuff. It does not have to come at expence of lagging on jump in high security systems. Plus many trialls are just left hanging with no use. Maybe ccp can erase unused trials more often. like twice a week or so. cz if person does not show up for 4-5 days he s either not interested in further learning or is isk farmer (selling isk on ebay illigaly later on) waiting on skill to be sufficient. That is even worth then unused trials. Common CCP. you can work something out.....

Edited by: Shimensoka on 15/02/2006 23:29:00 I have to disagree completely. Consider, there are usually about 13-18k people online. The server only allows 3k people for trials. I have never gotten to a point where I could not connect. I am on my 5ht day of trial and have every intention of continuing to subscription. I can honestly say that if there were only 1000 people on, my experience would of been nowhere near as good as it has been now, and I would of very likely NOT chosen to continue to a subscription.
PS - 1.5k people is not causing a huge surge of bandwidth usage and lag. Get over it.

Edited by: Sciro on 15/02/2006 23:38:00 No 1.5 k ppl spred out dont do much, But 500 ppl in one system do. And in general, pls read what i said. Not to exclude trials. Just relocate them on different server, similar to songularity. And for ll ppl that say they are new and just of trial, while actually they been around for while now: are you isk farmers or something?. No new charachter would dig deep into forums. I have started with trial too, just so you know. Anyway i m getting off the topic theme. My apologies. The point is trials need to move to clear high security areas a little.

The trials accounts ARE limited. Don't blame the noobs for the LAG and other issues, CCP has the problem in hand and will deal with it.
Lets wait until next wednesday and see what will come with the new hardware and the new patch "BLOOD".
Hope all this DAM lag will finish or, at least, be reduced.

I myself have subscribed to this game because I liked this game after playing trail for few days. Now I personally would have never put world of warcraft on hold and play this instend if it wasnt for the free trail.
EVE Online.. Thank you for giving us this chance to try out this game.
As for the lag.. dont try to blame it all on the trail account. Every time I logged in wit a trail account theres always under 2000 trail online. One whole thousand less than the limit.

I'm here because of the trials, too. Don't bash them, they serve a useful purpose. Let me see if I even wanted to go through the effort of playing the game or not, rather than make the investment and then feel if it wasn't right for me "Well, there's twenty bucks down the drain."
Besides, the trials arn't so much the cause of lag. You ever consider what happens when you have these massive fleet battles? I've heard there was a 250-man alliance vs. alliance battle going on when this recent problem broke out.

Point of order: Eve just broke the 100.000 SUBSCRIBER barrier.
Scrio you think the trial accounts are whats lagging the server? You dont want to segregate noobs...just move them off to their own server...hehe yours are the funniest posts i've read all day
The 14-day trial is one of the best things eve has going for it...it hooks so many ppl...it was not long ago that i SWORE i would never pay a monthy subscription to an online game. And here I am.

I heartily agree with the others who say that the trial accounts are not the problem. It is to the advantage of other players that CCP continue to be a viable, growing business. It does not exist just for the pleasure of those who have been playing the game for a long time. The lag problem will not be solved by trashing newbies and diminishing the number of new paying accounts.

The trial is the reason I have a subscription, I would not have purchased it outright otherwise. I know of others for whom this is the same.

Edited by: Oro Masut on 16/02/2006 07:50:15 Ok, so it seems alot of new subscribers due to free trial. Although i strongly believe, that alot of people would have tried at least a month with payment, if f.e. the client was provided at no extra charge. I am myself playing MMORPGs for a long time, about 7 years, and have tried almost any game. A free trial is certainly good to see, if you like the game mechanics and community. However every free trial in any decent game i have played, has sooner or later caused issues. Seriously, 500+ people in Oursulaert is apparently something Eve cannot handle. And i doubt, that the new cluster will be able to handle this w/o lag, not with a realtime market. Btw, i would love to be proved wrong. Maybe there is another solution....Do not put everyone in the same 4 starting systems ? Probbaly spread new chars on a random generator between 20 or 30 systems will help it a bit.

One more new player who wouldn't be here without a trial. Me and 5 friends did the trial together. One quit after 3 days, two paid for their first month, then quit, 3 still going 2 months later. At a minimum, that's 8*14.95=$120 US that CCP wouldn't have without the trial.
Can-spam is a problem, although it's also a good thing in moderation. 10 (different) cans at a gate with recruiting or market ads on them, I read them, maybe it's useful. 100 cans spelling something out... grr.
Oursulaert (and presumably the other problem systems) is a problem because it combines all of:
Starting storyline missions run out of there, so everyone who does them is in Oursu when they're set free. Many agents there, so those people stay More than 0 'roid there, so foolish miners stay (only the very foolish, but still) Central-ish (I hear less so than before? Market, market, market
You want to seperate these things out into different systems... release the newbies after the first storyline in a different system with very few agents and very few roids. Take all agents and roids out of Oursu, so only people who want to use the central market go there. Then Oursu gets moderate lag due to people using the Market (which has a momentum, and so will stay for at least a while), some other system gets moderate lag because it's full of newbs who are afraid of jump gates, but neither system is utterly unusuable on Sunday.
Er, sorry about the partial hijack. |

Shocking...
How many of you people who agree with this, played a trial before playing eve? and how many of you now are still playing eve because of that trial?
I know myself without the trial, theres no way i would have jumped into a game, its the main reason why ive never tried out any of the bigger main Online games. Nobody really would shed out there cash on a game, that could be, well crap.
The trials are exactly what there ment to be, a trial, everywhere you look in the real world there is game trials, go into a game store, and they have pods with the latest games, or the front of magazines, trials of games. Trials are probably the biggest and most easy way of bringing people into a game!
Now i suspect you dislike trials because of the lag they cause, and fair enough, cramming 500 people into a system isnt great, maybe making another few spawn points in eve for new players would be a better idea, altho since there will be new blood lines, im pretty sure they will spawn in other locations anyhows. Added with this we will have nice new servers soon.
CCP arent going to provide a set of servers that they are making no cash out of, ok i know they have SiSi, but thats a test area, very needed, and other games should take note, but a server for trials sounds, well insane!
OK, well thats my little rant over :)

The point of a trial is to let people see what this game is. Let them see wars, peace, technology, corps, other people. All that and a lot more is what makes this game so nice. If you move trials to another server, where they will only have trials and a few of the regulars helping they wont get the feeling that they're in a living world where things will happen if they want it or not.
They'll know that they are on a trial server, with other trials and thus why even bother to learn something or try to achieve something?
My thoughts anyway.

I wouldn't have downloaded, let alone payed for, EVE if I hadn't found out about free trial accounts. What made me start paying was the friendly veteran players in the game, that allowed me to tag along and donated (in my eyes) huge amounts of ISK and time helping me get used to the game.
Seperate the server into noobs and non-noobs because you are getting lag in Jita or Rens or some other lag capital is going to drive potential subscribers away, simply so you can mine Veld slightly faster.

I dont think its a case of remobing Trial Accounts, but something has to be done.
I think the best idea would be to spread the spawn areas out better. So have 1-2 spawn areas per region. This should help to even the problem.
but hey Im only guessing so ill probably be wrong :D

I have always been against paying to play games online, i felt like that for ages, until a friend of mine told me about eve-online. I decided to give it a bash and was bascially hooked on to it. if it wasn't for the free trial i wouldn't have taken it up. I am for the free trials, tis a good way of sampling the goods before taking the plunge so to speak.

I seem to be a little exception since i started without the trials. (at the time, i didn't even know there was trial accounts available/existing) But i have hooked few friends to the universe with the buddy system and trial account. As i see, it is pretty grammed at the "starting" points but there's an easy answer to it.Move away from the lag. It's actually easyer to move few systems further then blabber and blame all on the lag. Although i give a high five to the trial accounts, i see few problems in it too. The random starting place would be a good idea. To equal the load. It doesn't give a good first impression for new playes to find themselves in a lagpool. Although positive side is that there are lotsa people to help newbies to get in the game. Just my thoughts...

right after I was comfortable with the interface and stuff I moved out of the Caldari starter region. Why stay in a boring system where everyone, their mother and their pet doggy hangs out. A few days later I moved to a friend who started as a Minmatar. He was away from his starter region as well, so we both looked at the map and searched for a system within moderate range for both of us (Note: Neither he nor I could remember any system names back then, so we didnt know what the starter places were called). 3 guesses which system we picked? Yep, Rens, Rens, Rens
Anyway, while now I spend most of my time in the various low-sec systems nearby I still head to Pator/Rens every 2 days or so, to sell loot, to browse the market for stuff etc. To have some systems crowded isnt all too bad, it allows for a bigger market, higher visibility for whatever you are advertising and if you like to interact with a lot of others then its your thing. If you value lag-free-ness and prefer to go solo or in small gangs then you can simply avoid these systems, no biggie.
After all, if you don't like to travel into big cities because of traffic jams etc you'll try to avoid going there, too.
Btw, I also started with a trial - account, I don't even buy 'non-mmorpgs' without a trial, so ... damn if it wasn't for that trial my life would have several hours a day more.... crap.
P.S.: anyone been in the stress test yesterday evening? I was there and therefore I shall never again refer to the Rens on Tranquility as 'laggy' lol

at the last login there were 1650 trial accounts and over 20K paid accounts online, so thats about 12% of the total usage. Assuming trial accounts use the same amount of resources as paid accounts (which isn't true considering its unlikey a trial account as the skills to use as many drones or anchors cans, or participate in fleet battles, etc...), that 12% gain isn't worth the new player potential (and future monthly income) that the trial accounts have.
We complained about lag and they nerfed drones (and then people complained about that). We complained about lag and they restriced skills on new accounts. We complained about lag and they are at this very moment preparing to roll out a Huge hardware upgrade to help the problem. Guys, I'm not sure how else they can say, "Hey, we hear you and we're workin' on it!"
I have a better idea than getting rid of the accounts that will eventually earn the cash for future hardware upgrades....
How about every Sunday for 24 hours, we turn Jita and the surrounding area into 0.0? I think after a few weeks of "Sunday Slaughter", people would clear out and distribute the lag a little more evenly

I know it's only 2 pages, but I'm too lazy to read it, heh read the frist few post and I'm sure most of the rest say the same, so figured I would just as my 2 cents. Trials are a good thing for the growth of the game form what I've seen, me and 2 buddies tried it and we all 3 signed up. And you need to run them on the reg server because that gives you the full experiance. And for the record with out the trial I wouldn't have signed up, I was just tring diff games with trials, such as horizons(2 tumbs down) and once I tried this one I was hooked. Besides you vets need a constant influx of noobs so you can have a bit of target practice sometimes
