Day 4 and took all the advice of training learning skills before branching out. I did cheat and grab some other skills to equip and hunt in the mean time but omg, it's sooo hard to make myself pass up everything I want to do while getting these learning skills done.
Are they really THAT worth it?

His title said "leadership", but his post said "learning".
Yeah, learning takes a long time. I hear that it is VERY worth it though.
I personally waited 1/2 mil SP before moving beyond level 3 in my basic learning skills. This is what I would advise to others... training them right up front makes you sit around in a frigate with crappy guns... no fun.

HAHA DoH! Sorry about the title.
Why Cruiser? I'm running around in a kessie with 3 Msl Bays, 1 Rct Bay, AB, Civ Shield recouper thingy, and 2 RCUs to power it all. This set me back on my learning skills but figured it was the least I could do to have fun and prepare/learn more before cruisers and lvl 2 agents. I'm afraid if I jump into a cruiser I won't have the skills to operate it.
Thanks again for the advice. I guess I was looking for encouragement to endure the pain...lol

It depends on your temperament. I loathe inefficiency, so I have invested rather heavily in learning skills up front (>500k out of 1.1M SP). I am still flying a frigate, but now skills come quite quickly and I can really fly the frigate well. I should have Cruiser III done tonight, so I am approaching the cruiser stage slowly but surely.
I was having so much fun learning about the game and exploring that doing a lot of learning skills up front didn't really bother me. I have Eidetic Memory to III, and all the rest of the basic skills at 3 or 4.
Different strokes- I am glad I did it the way I did. I just wish I had the patience to do ALL of the learning skills first, but I think that is only something an alt could do

That sounds like a good plan. I currently have: Learning-4 Analytical Mind-2 Instant Recall-3 Iron Will-2 Spatial Aware-1 So I'll wrap these up around 3 or 4 and look into Cruiser then. Caracal here I come :)
Thanks guys. I was getting a little down thinking I had to do these amazingly easy missions for the next 3 months in a Kessie.

Edited by: Arakasai on 17/02/2006 18:02:37 As mentioned above, it really depends on you. I spent a bunch of time reading the forums while I trained up my learning skills. Then I shifted into trading (very cheap on skill requirements). I skilled myself up to fly the Badger II (Indy Skill 3) and went back to learning.
I traded on the NPC and PC market to pay for my advanced learning books and +1 implants. Eventually once I managed to get all my advanced learning skills to 4, I shifted back to mainstream learning.
I believe I had 2.2 million SP at the time and just over 2 mill were in learning. It sucked that all my friends were in Cruisers/Battle Cruisers/Interceptors. All my money went into advanced learning books and implants. All my SP went into Learning.
Now however, I have 6.5 million SP and my closest friend has 5.2 million. I have averaged 1.2 million SP a month, most people average about 800k a month. I have +3 implants across the board, I bought the first BattleShip out of everyone I started with. I also bought them all Battleships (A lucky 500mill drop).
So, it depends on your play style. But there are pros and cons :) I am now reaping the benefits of choosing to go learning first. However, I knew I would continue playing that helps a lot. A couple of the people I played with have already moved on. The game would have really sucked for them if they had spent all that time developing learning skills then moved on.

I'm about three months into the game now, and I've got about 2.3mil SPs, and I am finally two days away from being done with the Learning Skill Nightmare. Well, except for Charisma, because Charisma is stupid.
All the rest of them will be trained up to Advanced 4, Charisma is at Basic 2 or 3, I forget which, but it is happy where it is.
By the point that I went full bore into the learning skills, I was already to the point where I could pilot an effectively loadedout Ferox. :)
Me.

Almost exactly how I did it - but I'm not going the mining route. After getting into my Thorax I got Mechanic/hull upgrades/hull repair systems all to level 4 so I could have a decent tank for ratting and missions running while I do my learning skills. I also plan only to get a few of my basic learning skills to 5 and then train a few levels of advanced learning skills on top of those - and leave some of the others until later. This is because I'm really only interested in a certain section of the game right now. When I feel a need to branch out, then I will focus on those other attributes.
