I *just* realized the map can tell you alot about an area.. if you fiddle around with display settings and star colors.. Try it.. I wished someone pointed that out to me, I would have made some much wiser decisions on certain things....
So other noobs out there like me.. check it out. ;)

Yeah the map's great. I usually set the star color to "by sec status" or "ships destroyed in the past hour".
That doesn't keep me from venturing into an area where ships were recently destroyed. I've only been playing for 4 days and haven't gotten killed yet, which is probably why I'm taking chances. :)

Ok, if you're reading this do this:
F-10 (hot key to open map ingame)
"World Map Control Panel"; the secon tab should be labled "DISPLAY SETTINGS" click it; click "STARS" (there's an occasional bug here which my prevent the filter options from loading - if you do not see additioanl options below click a few different tas before clicking back on "STARS"); found in "COLOR STARS BY" click "Security status":
You should now see the EVE-verse shaded from red to green. Red is dangerous, green is safe. Well, as safe as it's going to get in EVE. ;)

It is a great way to make a "safe" run yes. One can also use it to find out: 1. How many stations are in an area. 2. Agents, their type and level/quality.
I use those two primarily because I'm still looking for a great corporation to work for and when mining it's nice to know a station is available close.
Asteroid death dealer, they never saw it coming!
