That bass looks almost as big as the guy who's playing it.
Or like he's concealing a gatling gun in the second neck.

MEH, i agree Vai is good, but Satriani is far superior, also tho sheehan is good Stu Hamm has got to be the best.
My list for guitarists would look like this.
1) Joe Satriani 2) Steve Vai 3) John Petrucci 4) Yngwie Malmsteen 5) Michael Angelo Batio
Various others after them but as far as im concerned they are the best in the world atm.

Stu is good. I went out and bought that Kubicki Factor bass when Stu was just getting big and thought I was getting a really unique instrument. Then, trying to sell it 4-5 years later, it turns out everyone and their mom bought one. The prices were like 1/4 of what they were...
I like Steve Harris & Maiden, but as far as a metal bassist, I'll put Cliff Burton up against anybody. Too bad he got squished...I think he really would have pushed the envelope even farther than he did.
As far as Van Halen, no, he didn't "invent" tapping, but he sure as heck brought it to a new level and popularized it.
EDIT: Oh, and how in the world could I have forgotten about THE MAN (like his tunes or not, he is awesome on bass): Les Claypool

Aye, but the way i see it, Vai is merely Satch in a different guise, considering Satch was his teacher ---- Join Us

Vai is great and Malmsteen is very unique but overrated in a way. Vai and Satch are the s***. Anybody like jazz guitarists like Mike Stern, John Pizarelli or John McGlaughlin? Seriously you should check them out. Its a different style but they can shred too.

Bah, you people and your metal guitarists. It's entertaining for a while, but a good flamenco/jazz guitarist would EAT THEM ALIVE. Django FTW. It's not all about single notes, either - as primarily a rhythm guitarist, I demand recognition for my people!
That Stu Hamm solo was wonderful. Banjo bass is rocking. It's not as hard as you might think - banjo isn't the toughest instrument - but playing it on huge strings like that is pretty nice.

ok holy crap...his guitar has a light up fretboard (the circles).
also, you know if he has an electric pickup/sustainer? He's gotta have one to keep some of those notes going that freakin long. a damn good sustainer that must be, cause my sustainer makes my notes sound like feedback... lol
/me whips out the whammy bar.

Before their deaths, the kings were Stevie Ray Vaughn and Dimebag Darrell. Nowadays, Vai and Satriani. If anyone wants to challenge my statements, I suggest that you go and watch Stevie Ray Vaughn's Austin City Limits performance, and go watch Pantera's performance of Primal Concrete Sledge at the Kings of Metal in Moscow in 93.

He is using an Ibanez Universe which comes with a Floyd Rose system (double locking). Floyd Rose systems are renowned for their awesome sustain. Also that his personal guitars are probably made from the finest wood on the market helps it a bit And yes, the lighted dots are indeed ftw.

Ibanez what?
That guitar is the JEM77B.
He'll be getting his sustain from a fair bit of gain and an FX pedal, i get that kinda sustain playing through a POD XTLive! with a meety setting
I remember a track on Satriani's live in sanfrancisco, during the transition between one song and the next, he holds the last note of one song nearly 2 minutes and then uses that same note to start the next song. He was doing alsorts of weird stuff with harmonics and his whammy bar too, that was mint! ---- Join Us

That guitar doesn't have a sustainer He does have another (called FLO) which as a Fernandez sustainer added to the guitar (that model is not for sale though ) His main axes are just prototypes of the production models nothing fancy on them. Actually EVO,which is his main guitar, has her neck replaced (Steve broke it on a tour in Australia) by an Ibanez Jem555 neck, which is the cheap model for the Jem (that's why EVO has black metal parts and not golden as the normal Jems) But don't take my word for ti. Go here to check it out Linkage
By the way Steve is not better than Satch and Satch is not Better than Steve they are just.....different.

And which guitar do you think the JEM series was based off of? The Ibanez Universe was Ibanez's first 7 string RG series guitars, Vai modified a Universe to the specs of what is now his JEM7 signature guitar
