This only holds for shield/cap... the Pith X-Large shield boosters beats this in terms of raw output... by quite a margin.
But still a shield booster I would like but don't have the isk... free bump

Working out the efficiencies of all XL boosters in the game (pre-RMR), the Gist X type works out to be the most efficient, in terms of energy required, boost output, activiation cost and mounting needs (cpu).
The joint best are Tobias modified and Gist X. The Pith X comes 9th. Honest. Though it all depends on what you value, a once off cost before you warp away, or a sustainable running cost.
